Chapter 17: Yuuki and Sakura’s Morning
Monday morning, just past 7 a.m., Yuuki woke to his smartphone’s alarm.
Opening the blackout curtains, bright morning light streamed in.
Yuuki used the bathroom, washed his face, and got ready.
For some reason, his room is the only one in the share house with a private toilet.
This lets him use it without worrying about others.
In a share house full of women, it’s the one place Yuuki feels at ease.
Heading to the lounge, he found Asuna and Reina watching TV news while drinking coffee.
“Good morning.”
“Mornin’~”
The two returned his greeting.
“Yuuki-kun, slept well?”
Asuna asked.
“Yeah, thanks, I slept like a log.”
“You look it. Your face looks all refreshed…”
Yuuki had gone to bed early, and the excitement of spending the day with Sakura again might’ve shown on his face.
“Asuna-san, you look tired…”
“Yeah… I haven’t been sleeping well lately…”
“Got some worries?”
“Huh? Oh… not exactly worries, just a little something…”
Asuna’s face reddened for some reason, and she dodged the question.
“I see, don’t push yourself too hard.”
With that, Yuuki started preparing breakfast.
He checked his ingredients in the shared fridge first.
The share house’s communal fridge has rules:
Write your name on your food with a marker, and don’t leave expired or spoiled items.
Violators have their stuff removed by the manager, Asuna.
Checking the fridge, Yuuki found his eggs, bacon, and lettuce.
(Bacon and eggs today.)
Taking out the ingredients, he turned to find Sakura standing there.
“Yuuki-san, good morning.”
Sakura’s big eyes sparkled with a dizzyingly refreshing smile.
Today, she wore a white short-sleeved blouse with frills and a pale blue long skirt.
Her waist-length black hair was tied in a high ponytail, swaying with every movement.
“G-Good… morning…”
(That smile first thing in the morning is unfair…)
Yuuki barely managed to return the greeting.
Her usual loose hair was now up, revealing a translucent white nape that shone in the morning light, captivating Yuuki.
“What’s for breakfast?”
“I was thinking toast and bacon and eggs…”
“Oh, what a coincidence. I was planning to make bacon and eggs too. Shall I make yours too?”
“Huh, is that okay?”
“Sure. Making one portion or two is about the same.”
Sakura flashed her killer smile again.
(Ugh, that smile’s too much.)
“Th-Then, I’ll take you up on that.”
Yuuki hid his flustered state, trying to stay calm.
“Got it, leave it to me. In return, Yuuki-san, can you handle the toast?”
“Deal.”
They divided tasks and started making breakfast.
Watching them, Reina whispered to Asuna.
“Don’t those two have a nice vibe? All warm and fuzzy, total youth vibes.”
“Totally, it’s almost embarrassing to watch.”
“Sigh… I wanna go back to those days…”
“What’re you saying? You’re still plenty young, Reina-chan.”
“But a six-year age gap is huge. Our skin’s firmness is totally different…”
Reina lamented the age difference with 18-year-old Sakura.
“If you’re saying that, I’ve got a nine-year gap.”
“We really don’t wanna get old, huh…”
Meanwhile, Yuuki sat at the kitchen counter stool, toasting bread and spreading margarine as it finished.
Across from him, Sakura skillfully cooked bacon and eggs on the IH stove.
The savory sound and aroma of sizzling bacon filled the air.
She finished the eggs at the perfect doneness, plating them colorfully with lettuce and cherry tomatoes.
Sakura set two plates of bacon and eggs on the counter and sat next to Yuuki.
She placed a café au lait for herself and a coffee for Yuuki.
“Yuuki-san, coffee’s okay, right?”
“Thanks, that’s perfect.”
Yuuki was amazed at the plate before him.
The bacon was perfectly crispy, the eggs a runny sunny-side-up, garnished with lettuce and cherry tomatoes—a flawless dish.
“Wow, Sakura-san, you’re a great cook.”
“Great? Hardly. My grandma just drilled me so I wouldn’t struggle living alone.”
Sakura seemed pleased by Yuuki’s praise.
“Um, Yuuki-san.”
Sakura turned to him, her cheeks slightly flushed.
“If it’s not too much trouble… How about I make your breakfast every morning?”
“Huh? No way, every day’s too much!”
Yuuki waved his hands at the unexpected offer.
“It’s fine.”
Sakura shook her head slightly.
“You’re escorting me to and from university every day, so it’s partly a thank-you. Plus, making breakfast for one or two isn’t much different.”
She smiled shyly.
(Honestly, I’m super thrilled…)
Eating Sakura’s home-cooked breakfast every morning.
There’s no reason to refuse such an appealing offer.
“…Then, I’ll take you up on it.”
“Yes! Leave it to me!”
Sakura’s face lit up, nodding happily.
Overhearing, Asuna and Reina exchanged glances, grinned broadly, and silently high-fived.
