Chapter 16: Akari
At 10 p.m. that night, as Yuuki was working on assignments in his room, his phone rang.
It was a call from his high school senior sister, Akari Shinomiya.
“Hello… Akari…”
“Onii-chan, is now a good time to talk?”
Akari’s voice sounded slightly nervous from the other end.
“What’s up, calling this late?”
“I just wanted to hear your voice, Onii-chan…”
Akari is a self-proclaimed and widely acknowledged brocon.
“For real?”
“Hehe~ You’re happy to hear that, right?”
“Well, yeah, I guess I’m kinda happy…”
Yuuki felt a bit shy at his sister’s straightforward words.
“Onii-chan, that fire was rough, huh…”
“Seriously, I’m so unlucky. Thanks for worrying, Akari…”
“We’re the only two siblings left, so of course I’m gonna worry. So, Onii-chan, anything troubling you?”
“Hmm, I’ve settled into Asuna-san’s place, so that’s fine… But all my clothes and textbooks burned, so I’ve gotta buy them bit by bit.”
“That’s tough. By the way, Onii-chan, you’re in a share house, right?”
Yuuki had told their parents about moving into the share house, so Akari must have heard from them.
“Yeah…”
“A share house… like, shared bathroom, toilet, and living room, right? So you eat meals with the other residents? Who else lives there?”
Akari sounded super curious about Asuna’s share house.
“Well, the first floor’s just me and Asuna-san, and the second floor’s all women, I guess.”
“Huh?! So everyone else is a girl!? Hey, Onii-chan, you’re not doing anything weird, are you…?”
“What are you talking about, Akari… Asuna-san’s letting me stay out of kindness, so I’d never do anything like that!”
“Fine, as long as that’s true… Anyway, Onii-chan, I’ve got a favor to ask…”
“A favor? What kind?”
“You know I’m aiming for Seijo University like you, right… There’s an open campus in July. I wanna go, and I was thinking I could stay at your place…”
“Stay here? This is a share house… Even if you’re my sister, having a girl stay in my room is… kinda bad, right? Akari, stay at a hotel. I’ll find one nearby… Dad’ll cover the cost.”
“Onii-chan… you’re gonna make your cute little sister stay in a hotel alone? Hotels aren’t free, you know. Our family’s not rich, so I wanna save on lodging to help out… Plus, I wanna see where you’re living, Onii-chan… And it’s been forever since I saw Asuna-san. So, please! I really wanna stay at the share house!”
“Even if you say that…”
Akari’s reasoning wasn’t hard to understand.
Yuuki tried to think of other options but came up blank.
“I’ll talk to Asuna-san first. I can’t say anything until I get her permission to let you stay in my room.”
“You better get that permission! It’s an important visit to prep for me getting into your university!”
“Yeah, yeah, got it. More importantly, are you confident you’ll pass the entrance exam?”
“How rude! I’m always in the top 10 on tests, and my teachers say I’m fine!…Anyway, I’m waiting for good news! Good night!”
Akari hung up unilaterally, and Yuuki sighed, setting down his phone.
Right after, Yuuki headed to the lounge to get Asuna’s permission.
Asuna was at the bar counter, sipping a non-alcoholic drink while reading a book.
“Asuna-san, got a minute?”
“Oh, Yuuki-kun. What’s up?”
Yuuki sat at the stool next to the bar counter and briefly explained his sister’s call.
“My sister’s coming to our university’s open campus in July. She wants to stay in my room… Even if she’s my sister, having a girl stay in my room is kinda bad for the share house, right?”
“Yeah, since she’s a girl, your room might be a bit tricky.”
“That’s what I thought. I’ll tell Akari to look for a hotel.”
“No, that’s not what I meant…”
“Akari-chan can stay in my room. We’ve got guest bedding too…”
“Huh, is that okay!? That’d be a huge help!”
“What’s with the formalities? Akari-chan and I are sisters, even if we’re not blood-related…”
“Well, yeah, but I’m worried Akari might see this share house and want to live here too…”
“I see… We’ll think about that if there’s a vacancy then.”
“Asuna-san, thank you so much for everything.”
“Time flies, huh~ Akari-chan’s gonna be a college student next year… Last time I saw her, she was in eighth grade, wasn’t it? She must’ve grown into a beauty. I’m really looking forward to seeing her.”
Yuuki was deeply grateful for Asuna’s warm words.
Now he could give his sister good news, and he felt relieved.
