Rising from the Slum City of Reincarnation in Another World ~ Gathering, Hunting, and Living a Slow Life by Eating
Chapter 60 Eltria Highway
After a few hours of our departure from Trieste, there was a bridge. It was a splendid stone bridge. A tributary of the Melria River flowed, intersecting with the Eltria Highway.
“That’s the Exis River. It’s a tributary of the Melria River,”
“Oh, I see,”
“If you go upstream, the water is clear, and there’s a beautiful waterfall called the Exis Falls,”
“I see. So the forest got its name from the Exis Falls,”
“You’re quite knowledgeable, Gid-san”
“Well, I try,”
There was a small cabin on the bridge where about five soldiers were stationed.
After half a day of traveling from Trieste, we found a convenient resting place and decided to have lunch there. It was our first time having a midday meal while camping.
However, since we brought our own magic stove, the process is the same.
I casually chop up some vegetables to make soup and add one of the Eldertake Mushrooms from earlier.
If we have any mushrooms, they bring out an excellent umami flavor, so I’d love to add them if available.
I add a small amount of meat, something similar to pork, but from a boar. We still have a decent stock, so I could add a large quantity, but since it’s lunchtime, I think it’s better to keep it light.
I use only two eggs that we brought along and make sunny-side-up eggs.
I season them with salt.
“Wow, this is interesting! The eggs are being cooked as they are!”
“Indeed. This really gives you the feeling of eggs.”
“Oh, that’s interesting! Meow!”
Everyone’s eyes light up as they watch.
When you try different things and receive unexpected reactions, it gives me a sense of fulfillment in my cooking.
Using a knife, I divide the eggs into thirds and portion them out for the six of us.
“We express our gratitude to Raffalier-sama. Let’s eat.”
“The taste differs between the yellow part and the white part!”
“Yes, the white part is slightly softer, while the yolk is fluffy.”
“I’ve never eaten something like this before, meow.”
We happily enjoyed our sunny-side-up eggs.
The soup is also incredibly delicious.
“You’re creating such a delightful aroma.”
“Could you share some of the soup with me?”
People from other carriages approached us and spoke.
“Sure, here you go.”
I anticipated this situation, so I made extra soup.
There are no more sunny-side-up eggs left.
Sip, sip, sip.
“Mmm, this soup is amazing. It’s incredibly delicious.”
“Hey, can I have some too?”
“Me too, me too!”
People started gathering around us.
Since we don’t have many bowls, I apologize to the people from other carriages but ask if we can share and reuse the bowls.
“It’s delicious!”
“It’s unbelievably tasty!”
“I could eat this every day.”
“Thank you, kind sir.”
“Well then, see you later.”
It seems like our soup is exceptionally delicious.
We quickly tidy up and prepare to depart.
Once again, we continue rolling and trotting along in the carriage.
The road is unpaved, with exposed soil.
However, the soil itself is compacted and quite firm, with minimal ruts.
It appears that the road is regularly maintained.
It must be the decision of the Lord of Trieste. On the other hand, Eldania currently lacks a lord.
Although there is some rocking, I think it’s within an acceptable range.
The three girls in the cargo area seem to be having a lively and enjoyable time.
When girls get along well, they bring so much brightness and cheerfulness. It’s wonderful.
As evening approaches, we stop the carriage at a resting place.
“We’re here.”
“Here?”
“Yes, we’ll set up camp here for the night.”
Upon Gid-san’s announcement, we begin preparations.
For dinner, we indulge in a feast of grilled boar meat.
As we cook the meat, people keep coming and taking portions.
“So delicious!”
“It’s amazing!”
“Great meat, great company. Cheers to another tiring yet rewarding day!”
For some reason, people from other carriages also gather, and it turns into a barbecue party.
And then, we simply go to sleep.
Since our night watch duty is exempted thanks to the delicious meal, we all fall asleep together.
We don’t have tents or anything of that sort.
We make do by lining up and sleeping in the cargo area of the carriage.
Well, it’s no problem since we’re used to sleeping in cramped slum houses anyway. No worries at all.
“Ugh, as I expected, it was difficult to sleep with the three girls clinging to me.
Damn it, the scent of a different girl is intoxicating.
It’s probably Lania, not the usual ones.
I don’t feel unwell, but my heart is racing, and I can’t fall asleep.”
Morning arrives.
I must have fallen asleep without realizing it.
In fact, it was more comfortable than usual, and I slept soundly.
A morning without the sound of church bells, it’s quite nice in its own way.
Time to prepare breakfast again.
To avoid indulging too much and regretting it later, let’s go with ilk beans today.
Although they’re called ilk beans, they’re prepared with spinach and taro, giving it a twist.
Just beans alone can be a bit heavy.
If there are different flavors, it’s still enjoyable to eat.
“What’s this? Poor folks’ ilk beans today? Oh, right, you live in the slums, don’t you?”
“Well, we can’t afford luxury every day.”
“Just being able to eat is a blessing. I remember having nothing but dehydrated rations for days.”
“Ohh…”
“That sounds rough.”
Dehydrated rations are like dry bread, and it’s tough to eat them with their crumbly texture.
Usually, you’re expected to force them down with water.
Just being able to cook during camping puts us in the top half or more, so it’s still a luxury.
For those who don’t have a magic stove, cooking can be troublesome.
And so, the second day.
We continue along the highway smoothly.
We stop for lunch along the way, and by evening, we arrive at our destination, the town of Barrel.
The town is surrounded by a wall made of several meters of soil.
The size of the town is smaller than expected.
We enter the town through a gate-like opening in the wall.
There doesn’t seem to be any entry tax or fee.
I noticed there were more than ten soldiers at the gate, and I wondered what was happening, but it seems to be the usual here.
Perhaps monsters are more likely to appear here than in Trieste City.
We stay at an inn on the main street.
The carriages are parked on the roadside.
Certainly, there is no carriage shed big enough to accommodate five carriages.
The innkeeper guides us to the dining hall, where we have dinner together.
“Let’s eat.”
“Yeah, dig in.”
What was served was black bread and vegetable soup.
There were bits of rehydrated dried meat floating in the soup.
Sips sips.
I take a sip of the soup.
It’s… okay, decently tasty.
But everyone seems to have a mixed expression on their faces.
They’re dipping the black bread into the soup and eating it.
I follow suit and do the same.
Hmm, the broth is a bit weak.
I can taste the saltiness, but the flavor is rather bland.
The vegetables seem to be radish, green onions, and taro.
Other than a small amount of dried meat, there’s nothing else in it.
A few people are looking at me for some reason.
“Hey, a monk’s food is tastier.”
“No doubt about it. Ahahaha.”
“Ahahaha.”
They all burst into laughter simultaneously, and I couldn’t help but feel a bit intimidated.
No, no, no. I don’t cook here, you know.
The adults are toasting each other with ale.
Gid-san and Melun-san are politely sipping on lemon water.
I also take a big gulp of lemon water.
This lemon water, it’s just water with a splash of lemon, but surprisingly delicious.
The girls have ordered the same thing.
Each establishment has its own strengths and weaknesses, they say.
The inn has separate accommodations for men and women.
“It feels a bit lonely, doesn’t it?”
“Yeah, it’s usually me and Minya together.”
“Yeah. This is the first time it’s just the guys.”
“Ahaha, goodnight.”
I share a room with Gid-san.
I wonder how the girls’ room looks like.
For me, the spacious single bed is perfect for a good night’s sleep.
