Rising from the Slum City of Reincarnation in Another World ~ Gathering, Hunting, and Living a Slow Life by Eating
Chapter 59 Carriage Journey
In the afternoon, I completed the sale of mushrooms at the Adventurers’ Guild.
“Well, now that we have the money, should we buy clothes for Ciel?”
“Huh, me?”
“Yeah.”
We headed to the thrift store zone where Minya had previously purchased clothes.
“Um… Can I really…”
“Well, that outfit might attract a bit too much attention.”
“I see. Which one should I choose then, meow meow…”
After searching, we found a nearly identical pink outfit.
“You know, this pink dress… My mom ordered it for me, meow. Even though we didn’t have money and she was going to sell me, she at least said I should have a dress,” said Ciel.
“I see, she was a kind mother,” replied Mina.
“Yeah. And on our last day together, she made me tomato stew for dinner. Even though she always said tomatoes were absolutely forbidden for me, meow.”
“That’s nice of her.”
“Yeah. But the next day, a scary person came and tried to put a collar on me, so I ran away, meow.”
“I see.”
I can understand why she would have a scary image of slave traders.
I see, so that’s the reason.
That’s why the village is more than three days away from Trieste City.
She escaped from there, almost got caught because she was mistaken for a runaway slave, and ran away again.
She made it to Trieste City and collapsed in front of my house.
The new dress has traces of her old dress.
I paid with the silver coins I had.
Ciel remained in a cheerful mood, occasionally gazing at the dress.
With everything settled, it was getting late.
I found myself sleeping between Minya and Ciel.
Being sandwiched between the two girls feels warm, but as a young man, it makes my heart race.
The room is quite small since we all sleep together, and if we don’t stick close, we can’t sleep.
It’s unavoidable.
With a girl on each side, I fall asleep, feeling like I’m in a dream.
Morning arrived.
Now that Ciel has become part of our family, from now on, we’ll address her like Minya, using just her name.
I went to greet our neighbors, Rudolf-san and Quest-san.
They seemed slightly curious when they saw Ciel. Perhaps they have some concerns since they are both cat beastmen.
I informed them that we’ll be away for a while and asked if they could take care of the Eggbird’s egg. They can either eat it or sell it at the guild.
Of course, if it sells well, they can even put it at Dridon’s General Store.
It will probably fetch around a silver coin each.
In my understanding, this price is quite high.
In reality, it might be even higher, but I’m not sure.
Just this alone is a price that can sustain a person.
Normally, I would be making baskets, as I introduced, every day.
Since there are sales channels, I can make as many as needed.
My income has become quite stable, and I feel much better than before.
“Alright, then please take care while we’re away.”
“Sure, leave it to us.”
Gid and Melun were dressed in splendid attire when they arrived in Lanierda. Their outfits were quite impressive, like costumes worn by nobles incognito.
Gid and I went ahead to the castle while Melun and the others rented a carriage from the Commercial Guild. Obviously, it wasn’t just a carriage; it also came with two horses.
In addition to carriages pulled by horses, there were dragon carriages pulled by Earth Dragons and bird carriages pulled by a bird called Rambard. The horse carriage had two horses, the Earth Dragon carriage had one, and the bird carriage had four birds pulling it.
We rented a regular horse carriage. Earth Dragons were the strongest, and the birds were the fastest. Horses were average and the cheapest option.
It was a covered carriage, although the cover itself was quite worn-out and in need of repair.
Fortunately, Gid had experience as a coachman, so we were in good hands. We loaded the goods to be transported to Eldania.
These were originally intended to be transported directly from Trieste City to Eldania. However, when the Commercial Guild found out that we rented a carriage, they requested us to transport these goods on their behalf. As a result, we received a significant discount on the rental fee, making it almost free.
However, we had to pay the fees and a deposit upfront, while the payment for the request would be received later. So, we needed some funds in advance.
“Alright, let’s depart.”
Gid, in the driver’s seat, started moving the carriage. I sat in the auxiliary seat, observing the scene.
The horses followed Gid’s instructions and started moving slowly. The two horses pulling the carriage started off quite slowly and gradually picked up speed. It seemed that their horsepower was low, or at least that’s how it worked. I always thought that carriages would zoom forward when the light turned green, but it was completely different from that.
We passed through the main street and headed towards the eastern gate. As we approached the gate, we gradually slowed down. Carriages couldn’t stop as quickly as regular vehicles. They had primitive brakes, but it wasn’t as easy as it seemed.
It required a certain skill to anticipate and maneuver properly. Thankfully, there weren’t too many other carriages on the road, so that made it easier.
We made a brief stop a little ahead of Dridon’s General Store. Our family and Lania were waiting there. In addition to that, there were four other carriages parked nearby.
“Alright!”
“Minya, Lania, Ciel!”
I waved my hand from the auxiliary seat.
“Everyone, get in the back.”
“Okay!”
Everyone climbed into the rear seats. Most of our belongings were stored in my item box.
Just in case, I loaded a few items like Ilk beans, ignition devices, a pot, and a water bottle. These were the bare essentials to prevent starvation in case we went missing.
Gid went to greet the caravan in the front carriage.
“Hello, I’m Gid, affiliated with the Elves. I believe my adventurer rank is B.”
“Wow!”
“That’s reassuring.”
“I have some gaps in my experience. We’ll be traveling together for three days starting from today, up to Eldania. Please take care of us.”
“Sure thing. Alright, caravan, let’s depart!”
Awaiting us was a caravan that would accompany us on the journey.
Multiple merchants pooled their resources to provide mutual protection, reducing the risk of casualties.
The carriage resumed its journey, advancing along the highway. Our carriage was at the rear.
I believe it was the Exis Forest and the Eltria Highway.
The Eltria Highway connected Eldania and Trieste. There was only one small town in between, with occasional opportunities for camping before and after it.
Even though Eldania could be seen in the distance from the lookout mountain, the actual distance was quite far.
The carriage trudged along, steadily moving forward.
With the Exis Forest to the left and the Melria River to the right, we continued straight on the Eltria Highway. As we progressed, the road became narrower, accommodating only the width of a single carriage.
I wondered how we would manage to pass each other, but at intervals of about 500 meters, there were wider spots that served as passing areas.
Some of them were spacious resting areas, with nearby streams, small bridges, and signs of cooking activities.
The caravan’s carriages continued along the highway.
