Rising from the Slum City of Reincarnation in Another World ~ Gathering, Hunting, and Living a Slow Life by Eating
Chapter 35 Goblins
Friday.
I wake up to the sound of church bells again today.
It’s been almost three weeks since I awakened to the memories of my past life.
After having breakfast, I plan to go to the forest again today.
“Minya, we’re going to the forest today.”
“Yes, meow.”
Her golden straight hair is as beautiful as ever.
I should probably buy some clothes soon.
And also some armor.
We stop by Lania’s house.
“Lania, we’re going to the forest today.”
“Yes.”
Once again, I utter a phrase that feels familiar and start moving.
Today, I feel like I’m part of a goblin extermination squad.
The volunteer knights of the extermination squad parade through the slums like RPG characters.
Of course, there are hardly any people watching.
With our magic staff and sword, we stand out a little, but no one really pays much attention.
It’s lonely.
Arriving at the meadow with the tree stump, we gather a small amount of wild herbs for today.
“Alright, we’re finally entering the forest.”
“Yes.”
“Minya, as usual, take care of things.”
“Yes, meow.”
Minya’s face becomes serious, and we face each other.
” Raffalier-sama, please protect us.”
Upon Minya’s words, she cuts sacred marks with swift hand gestures: right, left, right. We’ve done it several times before, so we’re accustomed to it.
It’s strange how it somehow puts us in a sacred mood.
“Now, let’s explore the Exis Forest.”
“Yes!”
This forest here has a name, the Exis Forest, although we usually just call it ‘the forest.’ It’s used to differentiate it from others when necessary.
The main road is called the Eltria Road. I’m not entirely sure, but I heard it’s a combination of the names Eldania and Trieste. If we end up going on a journey, I might learn more about it along the way.
We continue through the forest, enjoying the pleasant shade.
There are large heart-shaped leaves here and there.
“Oh, look! I found taro roots.”
【Taro Root: Plant, Edible】
Yes, it’s taro. Actually, on Earth, there are poisonous tubers and false taro leaves that resemble taro. So, we must remain cautious.
It’s a delightful harvest since we were running low on taro roots.
We continue heading north.
Next, near a fallen tree stump, we find mushrooms growing.
【Crimson Mushroom: Mushroom, Edible】
They are pinkish flat mushrooms, resembling the shape of an umbrella. The color is subtle, but they seem to be edible.
“It’s mushrooms.”
“It seems these are edible too.”
“They’re edible? I’m looking forward to trying them.”
Both of us, having had the experience of enjoying delicious mushrooms before, have faces that are practically drooling in anticipation.
“I can’t say anything about the taste, though.”
“Is that so?”
We continue on, passing by the checkpoint’s apple tree. Unfortunately, we had already picked most of the apples from this tree, except for the spoiled ones, so there aren’t many left.
We’re getting close to the spot where goblins appeared last time.
“I sense the presence of monsters.”
“Is that right?”
“Yes.”
Lania, with her blue hair, says so. It’s not a physical presence but likely a magical one. The Magi race, known for their proficiency in magic, may possess such magical sensing skills.
“I also have a vague feeling of unease.”
Minya, too, has a serious expression. The elven race, resembling holy maidens or priestesses, also seems to sense something.
“Gigi.”
“Gugyagyagya, gig.”
It’s the sound of goblins. They immediately emerge from the tall grass.
This time, it’s not a chance encounter.
There are four of them. Quite a number.
I position Minya behind me and Lania as we ready our sword and staff.
Even I have been practicing sword swings during my free time.
I should have grown at least a little.
“Hyaaah!”
I charge at the leading goblin, swinging my sword towards it.
The goblin, seemingly overconfident, gets caught off guard and is deeply pierced around its right shoulder.
“Gyaaaah!”
The goblin cries out, but I calmly withdraw my sword.
The remaining three goblins are thrown into disarray by the sudden attack.
Thud.
The leading goblin falls to the ground, foaming at the mouth.
One down, for now.
“Raging flames――Fire!”
Lania chants the spell calmly, and a fireball hits the goblin on the right with precision.
“Gyaiyaa!”
Engulfed in flames, the second goblin collapses, unable to do anything.
“Gyagggyagya!”
“Gyagya!”
The two remaining goblins finally raise their clubs, assuming defensive stances.
“I’ll make a contribution too!”
Minya slams her magical staff, the sacred staff, against the goblin.
Although the goblin manages to put up some defense, Minya’s blow smashes its club and inflicts significant damage.
At that moment, I follow up with a swift sword strike, tearing the goblin apart.
“Gyaaa!”
Letting out a scream of despair, the third goblin falls, helpless.
“Freezing frost――Ice!”
Despite assuming a defensive stance, the fourth goblin was powerless to ward off the incoming magic.
A block of ice, propelled by the freezing magic, strikes it directly, sealing its fate.
It’s a resounding victory for us.
“Oh, is it over…?”
“Yes, Ed-kun, it’s our victory.”
“We won, meow, we won, meow!”
Lania and Minya rejoice, embracing each other.
They then come over to me, wrapping their arms around me.
It feels warm, and there’s a pleasant scent.
Although I don’t have much flesh on me, I’m a bit soft.
“Ed, you’ve become stronger!”
Well, in my earlier encounters with rabbits, they always outmaneuvered me, so I’d say this is a definite sign of progress.
This time, I managed to land my attacks properly.
Perhaps there’s been some improvement.
I use a knife to retrieve the magical stone from the goblin’s chest.
Come to think of it, I feel like something resembling a level has increased.
There’s a vague sense that I’ve become stronger.
There might be a leveling or experience system after all, just not displayed.
