Rising from the Slum City of Reincarnation in Another World ~ Gathering, Hunting, and Living a Slow Life by Eating
Chapter 31 River shrimp fishing
Tuesday afternoon.
I returned home from the adventurer’s guild.
“I’m thinking about what to do, and I’ve decided to go fishing in the river.”
“Oh, really?”
“Well, when I say fishing, it’s just preparing a simple setup.”
In Japan, there are many rivers where you can catch crayfish, but in this different world, there are also a lot of shrimp.
At least, I think so.
Although there are not many river shrimp in the city, they are still edible.
I borrowed two baskets woven from the ivy vines at home.
“Are you using baskets?”
“Yes.”
While being watched by Lania and Minya, I head towards the south side of the road, where it becomes more like a small stream than a river.
In front of me is a stream. When I peep in, I can sense the movement of small fish or something.
If I had a big fishing net, I could easily catch fish, crabs, and shrimp, but unfortunately, I don’t have such a convenient tool.
First, I need a weight. I pick up a stone and place it at the bottom of the basket.
For bait, I have some leftover rabbit meat. Since there’s still some left, I’ll help myself to it. They say you can catch sea bream with shrimp, and in the old days, it seems like shrimp were abundant along the coast and near tidal flats in Japan. I gently place the meat next to the stones inside the basket.
I throw a branch I picked up along the way into the basket.
Since the basket has a handle, I tie it with ivy and hang it with a stick.
“I’m going to submerge this.”
I set up another one in a different spot.
Since there is no concrete and everything is in its natural state, environmental issues aren’t that serious. Thanks to the widespread use of slime toilets, pollution from toilets and such is no longer a problem. Long live the different world. The abundance of nature is truly wonderful here.
“It’ll be left alone until evening.”
“Really?”
Minya protests, but there’s no helped it.
Since it’s not a fishing hook or anything, even 30 minutes might be enough.
“Then let’s divide the time and try it twice.”
“Okay.”
For a while, I continue making wooden spoons in a place where I can see the setup.
This area is peaceful and tranquil.
Goblins and such rarely appear in this open and visible plain.
“Oh, by the way, Minya, Lania.”
“What is it?”
“I want you to gather ivy vines. It’s not urgent right now, so take your time. As much as possible.”
“Understood!”
Minya and Lania scatter around.
In this plain area, there are plenty of vines resembling kudzu.
Without the need to identify the leaves, the distinctive feature is the long, winding stems.
Vines like beans, morning glories, and cucurbits are twining types.
Kudzu, grapevines, and other vines crawl on the ground or walls, meaning “to creep.”
They are often confused, but they are technically different.
Now, the production of spoons is progressing steadily.
Although forks do exist in this world, but there are also those who prefer to eat using their hands, making them less essential compared to spoons.
Spoons are essential for eating soups, beans, porridge, and meals.
As a Japanese boy, I prefer chopsticks, but I’m refraining from using them.
“We’ve brought them!”
“We gathered a lot!”
The bags of the two were filled to the brim.
Lately, they have been collecting things often, so they always carry bags with them.
“Great job, both of you!”
“Yay!”
“Hehe, I’m so happy.”
Minya looks up at me with upturned eyes.
That’s right, I remember now.
“Here, let’s give you some pats.”
“W-woah.”
Minya loves being petted, just like a dog.
Her silky golden hair is amazing.
“What about Lania?”
“I’m fine.”
She responded a bit shyly.
Lania, being a bit more mature mentally, seems envious but doesn’t explicitly ask to be petted.
Ah, the delicate age of a young maiden.
“Well then, shall we take a look at the setup soon?”
“Yes!”
We approach the river shrimp basket.
The basket has a stick attached to it with ivy, so I hold the stick and swiftly lift it up, placing it on the land.
“Oh wow!”
The shrimps are already visible, jumping around.
We need to collect them before they escape.
We put them into a bag.
There’s quite a number of them. Around ten, perhaps.
“We did it!”
“We did it, meow!”
“Great job!”
It’s shrimp, shrimp!
They’re about 8 centimeters long.
Their translucent bodies have black stripes.
Since the river was clean, they don’t have a muddy smell.
[River Shrimp: Living organism, edible]
I’m tempted to eat them raw, simply dipped in soy sauce.
However, there is a moderate risk of parasites in river fish, shrimp, and crabs.
In this different world, medical and scientific advancements, other than magic, are not developed. The presence of parasites has never been a topic of discussion.
So maybe there are no parasites.
But it’s still safer to refrain from eating them.
I resist the temptation and bring them back.
I store them in the item box.
Oh, they’re still alive, but I was able to store them. That aspect is a mystery. I haven’t investigated it.
“Hey, I was able to store the shrimp while they’re still alive.”
“Huh? Really?”
“Minya, do you want to try being stored too? Though I can’t guarantee you’ll stay alive until I release you.”
“Eek! Absolutely not, no way. It’s scary.”
“Well, yeah, I guess so.”
The storage space is still a mystery, so it’s quite frightening.
I can’t enter it myself, so sacrificing someone else is the only option, but that’s on hold.
“Let’s go check the other basket.”
“Yes!”
The other basket also contains around ten shrimp.
I replenish the rabbit meat scraps as bait.
I rearrange the setup and sink it again.
Here I go again, working on my side job. Making spoons may seem simple, but it’s actually quite intricate.
When refining the shape, I consider things like how aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly they are.
Second round.
Around twenty shrimp. Almost the same quantity as before, collected once again.
And then…
“Wow, it’s a crab, meow!”
It resembles a mud crab, but it doesn’t have any hair.
I caught a brown, square-shaped crab that’s about 10 centimeters in size.
[Coishigani: Living organism, edible]
While people are aware of the existence of creatures like shrimp and crabs, only a few consider them as a genuine part of their food procurement.
Since we work to secure our food, there aren’t many people who think that they don’t need to work as hard if they can provide their own sustenance.
