Rising from the Slum City of Reincarnation in Another World ~ Gathering, Hunting, and Living a Slow Life by Eating
Chapter 29 Karaage
Continuing on Tuesday morning,
At the summit of the lookout mountain stands the watchtower of the Trieste Knight Order.
One of the squad members takes care of us.
He demonstrates the dissection process using one rabbit as a model.
Meanwhile, I proceed to dissect the other rabbit beside him.
Come to think of it, while my mother taught me how to extract magic stones from goblins, she never taught me how to dissect rabbits.
Maybe it was a matter of timing or she was busy, or it just happened that way.
The rabbit is successfully separated into magic stone, bones, meat, and skin.
【Magic Stone of a Horned Rabbit – Magic Stone – Normal】
The magic stone is about 2 centimeters in size, smaller than that of a goblin.
It has a purplish hue resembling an amethyst, just like the goblin’s magic stone.
“There you go, the dissection is complete.”
“Thank you very much.”
“No problem, it’s all good.”
It turned out to be less challenging than I expected.
Having some knowledge of human anatomy definitely helped.
Now I have obtained the meat I needed.
Shall we discard the internal organs? There’s a toilet over there.”
“Oh, sorry.”
I toss the internal organs into the toilet.
Knowing about dishes like giblet stew makes me feel like it’s a waste, but I suppose this is the standard in this world.
It’s common sense, right? Nobody really eats internal organs. Bleh.
Ah… Next time, when I handle them myself, I should hide and cook them for a meal.
“Thank you very much.”
With the return letter, basically a regular report, in hand, I descend from the lookout mountain.
During the descent, I encountered a horned rabbit once again, but it quickly fled.
Descending from the lookout mountain, I return to the grasslands.
Once I reach the grasslands, I should be safe.
In the distance, I can already see the houses of Lanierda’s slums on the other side.
I could go to the slums, but instead, I change my direction and head towards the main road.
Walking on the main road, I start feeling like a traveling merchant.
“The main road is easy to walk on.”
“Yeah, you’re right.”
“Nya-ha.”
It seems Minya is not thinking about anything in particular.
Continuing on, we arrive at the castle gate. I take a quick glance at the Dridon General Store before heading back home.
Now it’s time to start the real meat preparation.
Today’s lunch menu consists of:
Main Dish: Fried rabbit
Side Dishes: Boiled Ilk beans and Crow’s-foot beans
Stir-fried Horren spinach, onions, and taro with sansho pepper
Dandelion greens and lettuce salad
Let’s start with the other preparations before the fried rabbit.
I’ll begin by making the simmered dish that takes a bit more time.
“Alright, let’s bring out the rabbit meat.”
“Oooh!”
Since it’s larger than an average rabbit, the meat is also bigger. There’s quite a substantial amount to eat.
“I’ll start by cutting it into bite-sized pieces.”
Well, more like three-bite-sized pieces. The mithril knife cuts through effortlessly without the fat sticking to it.
“Now, let’s chop the garlic.”
“Oh, garlic!”
The aroma of garlic fills the air.
“We’ll mix salt and garlic and rub it into the meat.”
“Ohhh!”
Rub, rub, rub.
Ideally, we would let it marinate for better flavor absorption, but since it’s already lunchtime, we’ll opt for a quick cooking method.
“Prepare a pot with heated oil.”
I have already preheated it.
Before frying, we dip the meat in a batter made of wheat flour dissolved in water, with added salt, garlic, and grated ginger.
Some say using potato starch is better, but unfortunately, we don’t have any.
“We’ll fry them. And here we have ‘Karaage’.”
“Karaage!”
Technically, it would be chicken karaage, but this time it’s rabbit karaage.
Since the texture of rabbit meat is more similar to beef or pork, I believe it will turn out delicious.
Sizzling sounds
The meat is being fried in the oil.
Gulp
It looks so delicious that my mouth is watering.
While that’s frying, let’s prepare the salad alongside it.
Once the karaage has turned a crispy golden brown, we’ll remove it from the oil and let the excess oil drain off.
“Looks delicious.”
I quickly prepare the sautéed sansho pepper dish.
“There you go, it’s done.”
“Yay! Meat!”
Melun and Gid also have bright smiles on their faces.
“Thanks to Lord Raffalier, let’s dig in.”
“Cheers!”
They skillfully pick up the karaage with their spoons and bring it to their mouths.
“Mmm, delicious.”
“It’s so tasty.”
“Oh, this is amazing.”
The flavor of the meat exceeds expectations. What is this? It’s incredibly delicious.
Rabbit meat is similar to chicken, not overly fatty or too dry.
Juices ooze out from the inside, making it incredibly flavorful.
Even though the karaage is still hot, everyone eagerly devours it.
“I could eat meat like this every day.”
Melun casually remarks, imagining us being forced to hunt one-horned rabbits every day.
Well, it’s not bad because it’s delicious.
Somehow, it might fall within the realm of a slow-paced life.
“Sorry… I heard something.”
Oh, it’s an unexpected guest. It’s our neighbor, Mr. Rudolf, and his wife, Ms. Quest.
Both of them are part of the cat-eared tribe, so their ears are adorable.
They’re still a young couple. They’re around twenty-five years old. Hmm, from this perspective, maybe they’re not that young.
“Are you eating meat or something?”
Ah, they’re trying to mooch off us. Well, it’s more like mooching.
“Yes, would you like to have some together? We have plenty.”
“Really? In that case, we’ll gladly accept.”
“Sorry for the trouble.”
I show them the remaining karaage on the large plate and offer them a spoon.
“We’re grateful to Lord Raffalier. Let’s eat.”
Chomp
“Mmm, what is this? It’s delicious!”
“Let me try… Oh, it’s true, it’s so delicious!”
Both of them widen their eyes, surprised.
I wonder if they’ve never had karaage before. Probably not.
Although raw meat is sold at the butcher’s, the quantity available is limited.
Dried meat from some mysterious animal is the main option. Probably sheep. And there’s also dried fish.
The butcher shop doesn’t reach the inside of the castle gate, and it’s relatively expensive, so the slums have no connection to it.
I might have had it in the past, but it doesn’t seem likely.
The sizzling garlic gives a subtle kick to the savory saltiness.
The overflowing flavor of the meat is superbly delicious.
Since we made karaage out of three-fourths of two rabbits, there’s not much left.
But if there’s another opportunity, I’d love to have it again.
The sansho stir-fry and the salad were also delicious.
