Chapter 42: “Guess His Name’s Gonna Spread, Huh?”
—Somewhere in Kyoto.
When Ibaraki Doji returned to her base, her younger siblings were there to greet her.
“Ah, welcome back, sis.”
“Yo, welcome back, sis.”
“BeeeeaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!”
Smiling at Hoshiguma Doji, Torakuma Doji, and Kuma Doji, Ibaraki Doji replied:
“I’m home, my adorable little sisters. Everything fine here?”
“Well… fine-ish, I guess.”
“What’s up, Hoshiguma Doji?”
If Ibaraki Doji was Shuten Doji’s eldest daughter, then Hoshiguma Doji was the second.
She had reddish-brown skin, short reddish-brown hair, and a body clad in armor and gauntlets—though with plenty of bare skin showing. She looked to be in her late twenties, and despite her sharp eyes, there was a playful charm to her face.
From her forehead, a single horn jutted out.
“Kin Doji’s dead. Uh… can’t remember the name, but apparently the Galaxy Kappa Hero took him out.”
“…The Galaxy Kappa Hero again. Shinonon told me the name, but I still don’t get it. Either way, a human strong enough to kill Kin Doji has shown up in Kyoto.”
Ibaraki Doji let out a long sigh.
She didn’t mourn Kin Doji’s death.
Weak oni died—that was all there was to it.
Kin Doji had been the weakest of the five siblings. She’d always figured he’d die sooner or later—if anything, he’d lasted longer than expected.
“Kin Doji doesn’t matter. What annoys me is the thought that people might start thinking I’m weak just because of him. That would be extremely irritating.”
“So, what do we do?”
“The Galaxy Kappa Hero’s apparently in Kyoto. Catch him, squeeze every bit of info out of him… then tear him to shreds.”
“You got it!”
Hoshiguma Doji grinned wickedly, cracking her knuckles in delight.
“How’d things go with the Abe clan? Did that slow-witted head agree to our terms?”
“Oh, he agreed. Said we could attack humans as long as we help him out. Seriously—we oni attack humans because it’s in our nature, but those guys? Their nature is to dream up disgusting, slimy schemes. Makes my skin crawl.”
That last bit came from Torakuma Doji.
She was a tall woman with long blonde hair, two horns jutting from her forehead, and—unlike the armored Hoshiguma Doji—she wore a hakama and carried no weapons.
“By the way, sis—you met with Shinonome Abe, right?”
“Yes.”
“So what are we gonna do about him? The Abe clan’s already agreed to cooperate, so he’s basically useless now. And we sure as hell don’t need a spiritualist more dangerous than most oni. Might as well eat him or—”
Torakuma Doji’s voice cut off.
No—she cut off.
She couldn’t breathe.
Couldn’t make a sound.
Couldn’t even move a single finger.
The same thing had happened to Hoshiguma Doji and Kuma Doji as well.
“—Watch your mouth.”
Ibaraki Doji’s voice was quiet. Calm.
But every syllable dripped with so much killing intent it was suffocating.
That alone was enough to freeze her fellow oni sisters in place—unable to move, paralyzed by fear.
“He belongs to me. The one I’ve cherished… the one I love. If you ever stand against him, then die gladly. In front of him, your lives mean nothing.”
Her face was like a Noh mask—cold, unreadable.
And her sisters couldn’t say a word. No apologies, no excuses.
They could only pray—please don’t let Ibaraki Doji kill us here and now.
The terrifying truth?
Right now, Ibaraki Doji was stronger than even the Shuten Doji they knew.
Shuten Doji had been a powerful oni—
But never a scary one. He was the “oni among oni,” someone they respected.
Ibaraki Doji, though… was different.
She was pure fear.
Where Shuten Doji had long since stopped seeking power,
Ibaraki Doji never stopped.
She devoured humans, devoured youkai, devoured demons—
Even devoured gods.
And years ago, she had already surpassed Shuten Doji’s strength… only to grow even stronger still.
“…Haa.”
When Ibaraki Doji finally exhaled, the paralysis broke.
The three oni sisters collapsed to their knees, gasping for air.
“I’m sorry. I just needed to cool my head a little. You see… he’s my destined one. The first person I’ve ever loved. The only one I’ve ever thought I could give my body to. So I don’t need any other members of the Abe clan. I’m only leaving them alone because they’re still useful. Got it?”
“Y-Yes.”
“U-Understood.”
“Beeaaa—”
Hearing her sisters’ answers, Ibaraki Doji gave a satisfied nod and disappeared deeper into the base.
The sisters left behind almost turned their anger—at having their own sister direct killing intent at them—toward Shinonome Abe.
Almost.
“…It’s all that damn Galaxy Kappa Hero’s fault! That stupidly named guy showing up in Kyoto is what’s put sis in a bad mood! I’ll never forgive him!”
“No idea which swamp he crawled out of, but I’m gonna kill him.”
“BEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!”
And so, their fury ended up pointed in a completely ridiculous direction instead.
