Chapter 43: “Wait—They’re Showing Up?!” ①
Natsuki folded his arms, thinking, Now what should I do…
(Honestly? I’m starting to get a little bored. Gotta keep the momentum going, y’know? If I hadn’t run into Shuten Doji-ossan, I probably would’ve already hopped in a taxi to storm the Abe estate by now.)
Up until now, whenever he decided to kill someone, he just… did it.
Both in the other world, and since coming back here—this was the first time there’d been such a long gap between the decision and the action.
“So, okay. Wrecking the Abe clan is still on the table, but first I’ll meet up with Shinonon, then have a little chat with Madoka-chan…”
“Now, now. No need to rush, Galaxy Kappa Hero Natsuki Yura-dono.”
“…Tamamo-chan, you’re the only one who calls me by my soul’s true name.”
Hearing Tamamo-no-Mae say it made Natsuki smile.
Senju looked shocked that Natsuki had just casually called the legendary Nine-Tailed Fox Tamamo-chan.
Koume and Shuten Doji didn’t seem to care.
“…Y’know, it feels like it’s been ages since anyone called me Tamamo-chan.”
“Oh, sorry about that.”
“It’s fine, it’s fine. I’ll allow you to call me Tamamo-chan.”
“Thanks! Then you can call me Nacchan!”
“U-Um! Kids these days sure are… forward.”
Tamamo-no-Mae’s fox ears twitched happily, despite her attempt to play it cool.
“So, let’s swap numbers, set up message access, and follow each other on SNS.”
“You really are relentless, aren’t you?!”
Even as she said that, Tamamo-no-Mae pulled out her smartphone, and the two exchanged contacts.
“…Uh, is it just me, or is Yusuke under my butt crying blood tears?”
“Isn’t it kinda bad for a Hero to be radiating curses like that?”
Pinned down by Senju and Koume, Yusuke was quietly weeping—pure envy dripping from every tear.
“Now then, Nacchan.”
“Yeah?”
“If you want to meet Shinonome Abe, you’d best just wait here.”
“…Huh?”
“Calling him up and arranging a meeting sounds like such a hassle, doesn’t it? —See? He’s here already.”
At her words, Natsuki murmured a quick “Excuse me” and focused on sensing his surroundings.
Sure enough, he picked up on a cleverly concealed spiritual presence approaching.
To an average scan, it felt like an ordinary person—
But dig deeper, and there was a spiritual power like a deep, still lake. So far, only one person fit that description.
A hostess appeared in front of the sliding paper doors to the room.
“—Shinonome Abe-sama has arrived. Shall I show him in?”
“Yes, please. Bring him here.”
“Certainly.”
A short while later, in walked a suspicious-looking young man—white-haired, dressed in a classic black suit and gloves.
“Tamamo-no-Mae-dono, Shuten Doji-dono—always a pleasure. I am Shinonome Abe. Truly grateful you’d allow me into this room.”
“Oh, please. You only came because you knew Nacchan was already here.”
“Yo, Shinonome. Been a while.”
From the way Tamamo-no-Mae and Shuten Doji greeted him so casually, Natsuki and the others instantly realized—Shinonome Abe already had connections with both of them.
When his gaze landed on Natsuki, Shinonome’s usual air of suspicion melted away… replaced by mild disappointment.
“I did tell you not to come, didn’t I?”
“Tell a Hero not to come, and that’s exactly when he shows up.”
“…Fair enough. Actually, good timing. There’s someone I’ve been meaning to introduce you to. Come in.”
He beckoned toward the end of the hallway.
Light, quick footsteps began approaching.
Finally… Natsuki straightened, ready for whatever was about to come.
Koume, Senju, and Yusuke all held their breath.
And then—
“—Ta-daa! I’m a tiny old man!”
Standing there was…
A twenty-centimeter-tall old man in a tailcoat, silk hat, and holding a cane.
“Whoa! It’s the famous Tiny Old Man from urban legends!”
Natsuki’s eyes sparkled like a kid on Christmas morning.
“…Wait, shouldn’t you have brought Madoka Abe instead?!”
Koume’s shout earned an immediate, “Yeah, exactly,” nod from both Senju and Yusuke.
〜〜Afterword〜〜
By the way, this tiny old man is actually an important character.
