Chapter 3: The Answer to the Confession
“Good morning, everyone!” the homeroom teacher said, walking into the classroom.
The young, beautiful teacher my sister mentioned yesterday has arriiiiiived!
She’s young. Really young. Just… young. Young, but… isn’t she too young?
My sister doesn’t exactly look like a high schooler either, but……
Middle schooler? No… maybe an early-blooming elementary schooler?
Everyone else saw her yesterday, so they weren’t too surprised.
Or rather, they’d already gotten used to her. That’s some quick adaptation……
Our homeroom teacher.
Was even smaller than my already-petite, baby-faced sister.
And she’s bearing that signature twin tails. She straight-up looks like a middle or elementary schooler.
Her features are defined, so she’s pretty in that sense, but the disconnect with her appearance is ridiculous.
It’s like… watching an elementary schooler wearing makeup. Kind of painful to look at……
Seeing me stare with my mouth hanging open, the teacher smiled brightly.
Whoa! Again, something dark emanating from my sister’s back……
It’s nothing. Just my imagination……
As soon as she stood at the podium, the teacher introduced herself.
Shiroi Satomi. Age: secret. Japanese language teacher.
Twin tails, looks like a middle schooler. Even though her last name is Shiroi, she doesn’t say “Onee-sama” and apparently can’t teleport either.
So she’s an otaku teacher, huh.
She’s cute, though.
By the way—
“Sensei, how old are you really?”
Some guy from the back row asked, but—
“You can’t ask a woman her age, okay?” she said in an incredibly sweet voice with a beaming smile—
—while staring at him with eyes that looked like they could kill someone.
“Hiii!”
He let out a weird squeak.
After the teacher came class introductions.
No chuunibyou types saying, “A god dwells in my left arm.”
No easygoing guys announcing, “Yo! Looking for a girlfriend!”
Just normal introductions.
Of course, mine was normal too. Normal is best!
After that perfectly ordinary homeroom ended, someone from the seat behind me called out during break.
“Hey, hey, the girl in front—same last name, Hasemi. You siblings?”
The guy who’d nearly been killed by the teacher’s glare earlier—a typical jock type, the unfortunate handsome kind—spoke to me.
“Yeah, good catch.”
“Twins? You don’t look alike, though.”
The standard question arrived. I mean, boy-girl twins are fraternal, so of course they don’t look alike. Does this guy not even know that? Could he be……
“Nah, we’re a toshigo. I was born in April, my sister in March.”
I answered, a bit exasperated.
“Your sister’s cute, Hasemi. I wonder if she has a boyfriend?”
The unfortunate handsome guy (I didn’t remember his name) asked while looking at my sister, who’d already formed a friend group and was chatting near the front.
I obviously couldn’t say, Her boyfriend is me.
“Who knows? Ask her yourself.”
Somehow misunderstanding, this unfortunate guy said,
“Seriously? I got the big bro’s approval! I might become your little brother! Just call me Youichi, like your little brother.”
Ugh, this guy really is unfortunate……
His face is pretty decent, too……
In my mind, his title was decided: Unfortunate Handsome Guy. And his real name is Youichi. Wait, what was his last name again?
“So, what’s your last name?”
I asked, at least so I could actually call him something.
“Higashide Youichi. Weren’t you listening earlier?”
Like I’d pay attention to guys’ introductions.
“Ah, sorry. Well, good luck with that, Higashide.”
“No, it’s Youichi…”
Completely ignoring that, I turned forward and started preparing for the next class.
*
After school.
As usual, my sister was chatting away excitedly with multiple friends.
We’d been in the same class since elementary school. I was a bit moved seeing this side of her I don’t usually see—
But I couldn’t keep staring at my sister forever. We hadn’t talked about going home together, and I didn’t want to get in her way, so I quietly left the classroom.
“Ahh, Yuuuu, you’re leaving? Wanna walk home together?”
Just as I left the classroom, Asami called out to me.
Huh? Together?
Ah, well, we went to the same public middle school, so obviously she lives nearby.
“Sure, I guess. Same direction?”
“I think so. I saw you sometimes on the way to middle school.”
“Alright, at least partway then.”
“Yeah.”
Asami’s house was apparently about five minutes from mine. Pretty close, actually.
“Yuuu, you’re really nice, you know?”
“Am I?”
“Yeah. I talk like this, right? I can tell when people are getting irritated.”
Well, guys might get irritated, but her voice is cute, and I don’t dislike her slight lisp.
Since middle school, I’ve always found her soothing—I feel relaxed every time we talk.
“So I was really happy to be with you.”
“Yeah. I don’t have a lot of friends either, so I was relieved to have Asami… and my sister there.”
“Ahh, right, Shiori-chan is in our class too. I hope we can get along.”
“You’ll be fine. She’s like me in that way. Try talking to her sometime—with me, even.”
“Okay.”
Feeling soothed by Asami’s bright smile, we parted ways near my house.
My sister’s shoes are here……
Even though I left the classroom first, my sister’s shoes are already at home.
Feeling a strange sense of unease, I entered the living room and found my sister there, glaring at me with intense eyes.
“I-I’m home, Shiori…”
“………”
“Uhhhh, Shiori-san, are you perhaps angry?”
“………”
“You left me behind and went home with Asami-chan……”
Sitting in a living room chair with upturned eyes glaring at me, her expression shifted to one about to cry.
“No, you were talking with everyone—”
“You were staring at Shiroi-sensei too.”
She cut me off before I could finish.
“I wasn’t staring—I was just surprised. Wait, uh, Shiori, can you see behind you?”
“I can tell where you’re looking and who you’re looking at without even seeing, Onii-chan.”
Scary! My sister is scary!
“Actually, I was watching with a makeup compact mirror.”
Even scarier! Way scarier!
“I just looked at Shiroi-sensei because I was surprised. Yesterday my head was completely full of thoughts about you, so I wasn’t even looking.”
“What about Asami-san?”
“Asami was in the same class as me in middle school. We were just talking about where other friends went to high school and stuff.”
I really did only ask a little.
Her answer was “I dunnooo,” though.
“Onii-chan doesn’t have friends anyway.”
“I do have some!! I have a few!!”
Please, just leave that topic alone.
My sister’s mood got even worse.
“I wanted to go to school with Shiori—with my, my g-girlfriend—and come home with her!”
At that, she turned bright red and looked down.
“I wanted to go home with my b-boyfriend too. Sorry, Onii-chan.”
We both turned red and looked down. Being called boyfriend and girlfriend again is really embarrassing……
“But judging from today, going to and from school alone together might be a bit difficult.”
“Yeah. You know a lot of people.”
Only you know a lot of people, though.
“Alright! Then let’s go somewhere this Sunday!”
“Really?! I wanna go!!”
My sister’s eyes sparkled like a kid being promised a toy.
