Chapter 4: My First Date
Several days have passed since the confession. However, I’ve barely spoken to my sister at school.
She has too many friends; there’s just no time to talk……
As for me, the only people who talk to me are the “Unfortunate” Higashide in the seat behind me and Asami.
It hasn’t even been a week since enrollment, so having two friends in class is normal, right? Yeah, it is. No, you don’t have to answer that……
“Hey, Higashide.”
“I told you, Youichi is fine.”
“Yeah, got it. So, Higashide—”
“What. Is. It.”
I called out to the Unfortunate Handsome Guy, Higashide Youichi, who was sitting in the seat behind me during lunch break, gnawing on a piece of bread alone.
“Oh, you’re here today. You’re usually gone during lunch, aren’t you?”
I’m a guy with two friends in class. A guy with two friends…… it was important, so I said it twice.
I can’t eat with Asami because of my sister’s presence, and since Higashide is usually gone, I’m always eating a loner’s lunch. I’m a little happy to have someone to eat with today. Just a little. Really, just a tiny bit—I’m not being a tsundere or anything.
“Yeah, I usually eat in the club room, but apparently the advisor is using it today, so it was off-limits.”
“Heh…… well, that doesn’t matter. There’s something I want to ask.”
“Hey, usually you’d ask what club I’m in or something.”
“Nah, I’m not interested, so it’s fine. Anyway—”
“Sigh…… fine. What? What do you want to ask?”
“Where do people go on dates?”
A momentary silence. I thought he hadn’t heard me and was about to repeat myself, when—
“……D-D-Do you have a girlfriend?!!?”
He grabbed my collar and shook me violently. Stop, you’re scrambling my braiiiiinnnns!
“No, wait! I don’t! Calm down!!”
A dozen or so people in the class, including my sister, looked at us with suspicious, bewildered faces.
“S-Sorry. I lost it for a second.”
Higashide sat back down while bowing apologetically to those around us.
“So, if it’s not a girlfriend, why are you asking about date spots?”
Maybe to calm himself, Higashide took a sip of milk through a straw, leaned back against the chair, and interlaced his hands behind his head as he asked.
“Uhhhh—right, right. A game. I’m stuck on a choice in a game.”
“Hah? A game? Is the flag triggered? Did you confess?”
“I did. Ah, no, I was confessed to.”
“You were confessed to? Then that’s easy. Calling her to your room is the only choice. Go straight into the H-scene. Congrats. Lend it to me later.”
“AS IF I COULD DO THAAAAAAAT!!!”
This time I was the one shouting at the top of my lungs, earning cold stares from everyone around us.
Higashide looked at me with a startled face.
“Ah, s-sorry…… I lost it.”
Now it was my turn to sit back down while bowing apologetically to the room.
“What? You’d prefer the girl’s room? The nurse’s office? Don’t tell me you’re into doing it outside all of a sudden—”
“Wrong! I’m not talking about an eroge! I’ve never even played one!”
He gave me a look of pure doubt.
Whether he doubted that I didn’t own any eroge or that I didn’t actually have a girlfriend, I couldn’t tell. But after a short pause, as if sensing something, Higashide started thinking seriously.
“Hmm… well, I guess the classics are karaoke or a movie?”
“I see, I see.”
“After that, amusement parks, parks, cafes, shopping. That’s about it.”
“Pretty cliché.”
“Well, look. If the person likes you, they’ll be happy anywhere, won’t they?”
“Is that how it works?”
“Yeah, that’s how it is. Wow, I’m actually saying something pretty good right now. Yeah.”
“If only you hadn’t added that last part. Well, thanks.”
“Don’t mention it. Just make sure to give me some advice when I start dating your sister.”
“Yeah, yeah.”
I brushed him off, but Unfortunate Higashide didn’t care, rambling on endlessly about things that will likely never happen in his life. Fine, I’ll officially nickname this guy “Unfortunate.”
With that decided, I gave half-hearted replies to Unfortunate’s fruitless conversation while mulling over my plans for the weekend.
Even if we’re “dating,” we’re siblings and classmates. The school is nearby and there are plenty of people we know; it’s not like we can be lovey-dovey somewhere in public.
On the other hand, we aren’t lovey-dovey at home either. Our recent daily routine is just chatting over tea in the living room after getting home.
We really aren’t being lovey-dovey! We’re just sitting close and talking, that’s all.
My sister happily goes on and on about her friends, complaining about classes, or how the math teacher has a funny way of talking.
Sorry, Shiori. I don’t really have any topics to talk about. Especially about school……
I’ve never done this before so I don’t really know, but I honestly wonder, Is this what dating is like? Still, watching her talk so happily, I think, Well, this is fine. I’m enjoying myself, too.
“So, Shiori. About the weekend. Is there anywhere you want to go?”
When her story reached a lull, I asked about the pressing matter of where to go for the weekend.
I’ve thought about it, but I just don’t know. This is my first time ever going out with a girl, after all.
I don’t have enough experience to say “Just follow me” like a real man, and there’s no point if my sister doesn’t enjoy it because of my selfishness.
“The weekend date, right? Where……? Hmm, anywhere is fine! Wherever you want to go, Onii-chan.”
“Even if you say anywhere is fine~~”
That actually makes it harder to decide. “Anything” or “Anywhere”……
“If you’re taking me, Onii-chan, it could be Akihabara, or Animate, or Gamers, or Toranoana, or a Maid Cafe, or Otome Road—”
“No…… I’m not that much of an otaku. I mean, you’re well-informed. I don’t even know what that last one means.”
“Then… how about the Westin, or the Conrad, or the Ritz-Carlton……?”
My sister blushed as she named off ultra-luxury hotels in Tokyo.
“No, we’re not going. I don’t have that kind of money.”
“Then… Harry Winston? Or Tiffany’s?”
“Forgive me, I am not buying a ring. More like, I can’t.”
“Uhhhhhh……” Shiori began to think seriously. After agonizing for a while, she answered as if she’d just remembered something.
“Then, hey…… I want to go to an aquarium.”
“An aquarium? Oh, an aquarium, huh. That might be good. I didn’t think of it, but it is a classic. Where should we go? Shinagawa, Ikebukuro, Kasai… maybe somewhere a bit further? Come to think of it, there was one in Enoshima, too.”
“No. Um, you see, there’s an aquarium I want to go to with you, Onii-chan.”
“An aquarium you want to go to with me?”
“Yeah. The Saitama Aquarium.”
Huh? Saitama Aquarium?
Saitama doesn’t even have a sea……
