Chapter 2: The Answer to the Confession
“Huh?”
My sister made a weird face and let out a weird sound.
Did she mishear me? I thought that was an important part, so I said it again.
“Dating as brother and sister—”
“No, Onii-chan, I heard you. That’s not what I mean—what do you mean by ‘dating as brother and sister’? Are you turning me down? That Japanese sounds weird, doesn’t it?”
Even as tears streamed down her face, she asked what I meant.
“That’s not it. I mean, let’s date.”
Her tear-filled eyes widened, her head tilted, and her distorted expression turned into a ??? face……
“You’ll go out with me?”
“Yeah. But dating like siblings.”
Her brow furrowed even more, turning her face into an even bigger ???
The wrinkles are gonna stick, Shiori.
I touched her wrinkled brow, smoothing it out while wiping her tears with my sleeve.
“Look, I don’t want to make you cry anymore. And if we try dating, maybe we’ll realize—nope, this isn’t working. I know it sounds weird to say ‘like siblings,’ but I’m proposing we try dating with some… restraint.”
“So—”
Before I could finish, she threw herself into my arms.
“Yeah! That’s fine! Thank you! I love you so much, Onii-chaaaaaan!!!”
“I mean, that’s why I said restraint… well, whatever.”
I patted her head and let her cling to me until she calmed down.
And so we started dating (The End).
Like a typical romance novel, that’s where it ends—not my problem after that!—except that’s not how this works.
And just because we decided to date, it’s not like we can openly announce, “We’re dating!”
Obviously we’d have to keep it secret from our parents, or they’d faint on the spot.
When I asked my sister if she had that kind of resolve—
“Based on how you acted this morning, Onii-chan, Mom would totally figure it out, you know.”
With red eyes like a crying crow’s, my sister laughed at me.
Seeing her act so relaxed, I asked her.
“Shiori, have you dated anyone before?”
“Ehhhh, of course not. I’ve liked you the whole time, Onii-chan.”
“……I see.”
She said something totally embarrassing so smoothly.
Seeing my reaction, my sister went “Ah!” and looked down with a bright red face.
“Yeah,” she said.
Ah. Just now, for a split second, I thought my sister was cute—in a romantic way.
I shook my head to calm myself down.
I slapped my cheeks once, faced my sister, and asked as her first-ever boyfriend.
“So, uh… what do people do when they’re dating?”
To me asking pathetically, my sister replied,
“Ehhhh? For starters, go to school together, watch movies, go shopping, have tea—stuff like that?”
Template dates straight out of manga. But if the two of us go somewhere together as siblings, how would people see us? I wondered.
“Hmm… well, I guess if it’s just that much, it wouldn’t be weird for siblings to do together… maybe?”
“Probably?”
“Alright then, let’s start with what we can do. From tomorrow, let’s go to school together. But at school and at home, let’s act as normal as possible.”
“Okay!”
And so, our sibling relationship began.
So we decided to date under the guise of being close siblings.
But if we suddenly became a lovey-dovey sibling pair, our parents and friends would find it weird, right?
We made some light rules: don’t hang out in each other’s rooms like usual, and in front of parents or at school, act as normal as possible.
Our uncertain relationship would start tomorrow morning.
As usual, we woke up separately, finished breakfast separately, and left the house separately.
The plan: Shiori leaves first, then I leave a bit later and catch up to her.
My sister was walking slowly ahead. Target locked—
I quickened my pace, about to catch up……
“Shioooori! Good morning!”
Two of my sister’s friends called out to her.
Ah, right. You have tons of friends, don’t you.
I stared at my sister with distant eyes.
When she saw me, her face looked sad for a split second before she hurriedly smiled again.
As I watched her answer her friends with “Good moooorning!” from the corner of my eye, I walked past them.
From behind me:
“Wasn’t that Shiori’s brother just now?” And from another:
“Ehh, he doesn’t look like Shiori at all. And he’s pretty normal?”
……Leave me alone!
Our first dating event—walking to school together—ended in failure.
As usual, I trudged to school alone. Ugh, nobody calls out to me……
I arrived at school. First time here since the entrance exam.
Comparing the class list I got at yesterday’s ceremony with the school map, I headed to the classroom.
When I entered the class, since it was a neighborhood high school, I saw some vaguely familiar faces.
The class list should have shown if there were any people I knew, but I’d been too distracted since yesterday to check who might be there.
Since I left home early to try walking to school with my sister, the classroom was still pretty empty.
As I sat down, my sister entered the classroom.
“Shioooori! Good morning!”
Despite how sparse it was, several people greeted her.
Smiling, she sat down at the seat with her name—posted in attendance number order—which happened to be right in front of me.
“Good morning, Onii-chan.”
Your face is twitching, Shiori. And isn’t it weird to greet each other in the classroom when we live together?
“Ah, yeah. Morning.”
Before I could finish, friends gathered around my sister.
Her friends chatted away with giggles and squeals.
While nodding along, they kept glancing at me and blushing.
They’re cute, but blushing at your brother is a no-go, Shiori.
Then, from behind me—
“Yuuuuu, good morniiiing.”
In a slow, drawn-out tone, Shisui Asami—a classmate from middle school—called out to me.
“Oh, Asami, you’re at this high school too?”
“Yup. Yesterday when I saw the class list, I saw we were in the same class, so I was a little relieved. I talk kinda slow, so I don’t have many friends, you know.”
Asami giggled, “Ehehe.”
Short bob, a bit on the plump side—or rather, for a first-year, her chest was making some serious claims. Droopy eyes that looked like a beckoning cat when she smiled.
She was cute, but maybe because she was self-conscious about her slow speech, she’d been pretty reserved in middle school.
We were in the same class in second and third year, and since our seats were close and we were both basically loners, we’d chat from time to time. Fellow loners—okay, yeah, shut up.
“Let’s get along this year, ‘kay?”
Saying that, she went to her seat. I turned forward and saw—
What looked like a dark aura emanating from my sister’s back.
“Sh-Shiori, what’s wrong? Your face looks…”
One of the friends who’d been giggling noticed something was off with my sister.
“Nope, it’s nothing!”
I couldn’t see what kind of face my sister was making.
