Chapter 71: My Fiancee and Outlet – 2
TL: lime
ED: Spynine01
The bus ride took about an hour.
Thanks to the medicine, I arrived at our destination without getting sick.
“Uwah…”
I let out a mournful voice when I saw the outlet park we had arrived at.
There were quite a few empty seats on the bus, maybe because it was Golden Week, but are they vacant? Is what I thought but that was not the case. As one would expect from a major holiday, the bus was crowded.
“Where do you want to strike first?”
The outlet park had quite a large number of brands at reasonable prices in a very large area.
Just a quick glance at the signs in front of the stores 『80% Off』 and 『Half Price』like signs were plastered everywhere.
“I’ll go to the main attraction first.”
“I see. Is Shiori the type of person who eats her favorite food first?”
“No… I usually would never do that. But this time, I’m breaking that rule!”
“Ohー.”
Her eyes glint like those of a wild beast that was hunting its prey.
“So? What’s the main thing here?”
“This way. Follow me!”
I decided to follow her through the area.
We headed through the crowds in the opposite direction from the bus entrance.
And what was waiting for me when we arrived there――.
“I see.”
It was a store for the anime about witches that Shiori likes.
Going out with me――It’s a bit of an exaggeration, but precisely because she revealed what she was hiding I guess she decided that it would be okay to go here with me.
If that’s the case, I feel a bit glad.
“Muwah~.”
“Shiori-san, Shiori-san. You’re snorting like a horse.”
“I know that… It’s impossible not to get excited in such a situation.”
She was huffing and puffing through her nose and her breathing was a little erratic.
If they see her like this at school, everyone would be disappointed, wouldn’t they? On the other hand, is it possible to have the boys see this figure and be disappointed at the same time?
“Kojiro! Hurry and line up already!”
“Line up?”
When I was told that, there was a long line in front of the store, and someone who looked like a staff member was standing over there holding a placard that said 『Last in line』.
“They’re probably restricting entry.”
“Restricting Entry…”
Shiori pointed towards the entrance.
Then, the people in line entered in place of them.
“The person in line was replaced by another person who entered. It’s going to take a long time.”
“The type that takes a long time…”
I wonder how long we’ll have to wait here… No, based on the number of people in line and the number of people coming out, it take about an hour or two.
I don’t really like to wait that long――.
“Muwah~.”
Shiori seems to be having a good time though. I guess I’ll just have to wait with her――.
――A few dozen minutes had passed by. We were killing time by talking about nonsense and fiddling with our phones, but there was no sign of progressing through this line at all.
I had just checked on my phone, and it seems that this store is only open for a limited time, and it was only available at this time of the year. That’s why the fans, including Shiori, are willing to wait for hours to get in.
“Hey? I’m not familiar with this anime. I knew it was a story about a witch child who appears and helps people. Is it actually something like that?”
Since we had come all this way, I thought it would be more enjoyable if I had a little knowledge about the anime so I asked Shiori about it, she put her phone that she was playing with in her pocket and glanced at me.
“Yes but no.”
“What do you mean…?”
“Certainly, it’s a story centered about using magic to save people, and pranks, and magic is the main focus. But that’s not the point.”
“Hmm…. What’s the main point then?”
“Real human relationships.”
“Human relationships? ――This is an anime for elementary school students, right?”
Shiori nodded when I asked.
“Basically, it’s a cheerful story. It’s a daily slice of life type story where you laugh and use magic with your friends.”
“But,” she said.
“Although they are elementary school students, they also depict realistic aspects such as lost loves, cracks in friendships, bullying problems, and so on.”
“O-Oh. It tackles such heavy topics, huh? You mean they use magic to solve these problems?”
“Sometimes they do, but mostly they don’t use it when it comes to… proper relationships.”
“Eh? They don’t use it?”
Shiori nodded happily.
“Even without magic, Sora-chan is popular with everyone.”
I silently waited for her to continue speaking, expecting that the proper noun that came out of nowhere was probably the main character of the anime.
“She’s clumsy, goofy, gets bad grades, and has no athletic ability, but she’s strangely at the center of everyone’s circle. She solves problems more often than not with her cheerful personality and her hard-working attitude toward others.”
“I see. It’s an anime that shows children that they don’t need magic to be able to do many things.”
“That’s how I see it.”
She blurts out.
“I wanted to be like Sora-chan…”
A short pause after she mumbles, she chuckles, “Ahaha…”.
“It hurts at my age to want to be a quirky anime character…”
“Really?”
I don’t follow her because I like Shiori; I tell her what I think of it myself.
“For example, if someone admires Edison, that means he admires inventors, and he wants to be an inventor in the future, I think it’s wonderful that the person has something to aspire to. But it is wrong for someone who admires Edison to make fun of someone who admires a cartoon character. Edison and Sora-chan are not real people. I think Edison lived a long time ago, but there is no one who knew him then who lives now. It’s only through hearsay that his achievements have been passed down to the present day, isn’t it? It’s easy for someone to twist his achievements and views now. So from my point of view, they’re both fictional characters.”
After I had explained my viewpoint at length, Shiori voiced her opinion.
“So you’re saying that the people who are alive today are made fun of because they admire them, isn’t it?”
“No, well… it’s just a figure of speech… I’m saying that it doesn’t matter what the object of your admiration is, the point is『what do you want to be?』. Shiori wants to be like Sora-chan, so it’s wrong to say that it hurts to be her or anything.”
“Really.”
My impassioned speech was put away with the usual word by Shiori.
“So you want to be a clumsy, goofy, poor, and athletically challenged student?”
“No, no, no. Not in that way!”
“Ahaha. That’s right.”
If that were the case, you were doing the exact opposite the entire time.
“Well, I think you’re getting closer to Sora-chan these days.”
When I said that, she looked a little happy and her voice trailed off, “Y-Yeah?”
“It sounds arrogant for someone like me who doesn’t know much about Sora-chan to say that though but… Compared to when I first saw you, you have a much brighter mood, and even though you said you didn’t have any friends, we had lunch with Shijo and Touma. You’ve started eating with them, and you spend a lot of time with Shijo.”
I don’t know much though. While thinking that, I expected that if the two girls were to discuss it, there would be a love story involved, so I asked her about it. [EDN: There’s no dialogue after this it seems it’s up to your interpretation.]
“Yeah… Yeah! That’s right. I’m giving Sumire-chan advice like Sora-chan!”
“That means you’re unconsciously getting close to her ideal――and also the way to the store.”
“What?”
Shiori quickly looks ahead.
She notices that the next time someone leaves, it looks like she’ll be able to get in the store.
And when the time comes and a staff member ushers her in, “Next customer, please” with a shout of enthusiasm, she went inside.
♢
“No… If I think about it again… I actually bought it…!”
She said again as we boarded the bus for our return trip, she headed to her assigned seat, and placed her luggage on the shelf above her.
When she entered the store, Shiori was putting items in her basket with the vigor of buying everything in the store. It was nice to see her, but I wondered if her money was safe in that situation.
When I went to the checkout counter, my eyeballs nearly popped out of my head at the price that was listed, it was not a price for a high school girl to be able to pay for.
“At times like this, money is something to spend lightly.”
“Clever way to use it.”
Laughingly, I took a seat by the window.
Darn it, I had forgotten to take my motion sickness medicine.
But if I took it here, Shiori would find out. However, it would be lame if I got sick during the ride, so I shamelessly took out the motion sickness medicine and drank it.
It was a chewable motion sickness medicine, so I didn’t need any water.
“What’s that?”
Shiori, who had noticed me, asks, to which I reply with a wry smile.
“Ahー, I’m the type of guy who gets carsick a lot, so, you know, just in case.”
Shiori looks a little dejected as I said this.
“Would it have been better if we had not taken the bus?”
“No, no, it’s not like that, it’s not like that at all.”
I waved my hand with all my might and denied it.
“But… this time I’m the only one having fun… Kojiro is easily intoxicated, but kept following me the whole time――”
Shiori was about to say something thoughtful, so I put my hand on her head to force her to stop.
“Bahaha! It’s fine! It was fun to watch!”
I patted her head roughly as I said it, and she laughed and said, “Ah, stop”.
“Orya! Orya!”
When I continued further, she sounded a little angry, “Mou… my hair,” and so I let go of my hand.
Then I told Shiori, who was combing her hair with her hand.
“Today was a lot of fun. I got to hear about someone that Shiori admires.”
“Ugh…”
Shiori, perhaps embarrassed, sat down deeply, then closed her eyes and began feigning that she was asleep.
“Hey. Shiori?”
“No answer? She looks like just a corpse.”
“Surprisingly, you know about quite a bit about that sort of thing.”
Without answering my words, Shiori kept her eyes closed.
A few minutes after the bus departed. I was staring blankly out the window because looking at my phone made me sick, when something hit me on the shoulder. Looking at it――.
“Shiori…?”
Shiori’s head was on my shoulder, and I could hear her small breathing in her sleep.
“You seriously went to sleep just like that… Well, she was unusually excited for once so I guess she’s tired.”
If you want to use my shoulder, I’ll lend it to you as much as you want.
Even though I thought so, her sweet smell and the effects of the medicine made me want to sleep too.
“I’ll just borrow this for a bit…”
As I rested my cheek on Shiori’s head, my consciousness gradually faded away and I was lulled into a world of sleep.
I didn’t dream at all, but I was able to stay there comfortably until we arrived at our destination.
