Chapter 23: What My Fiancée Wants
TL: lime
ED: Spynine01
The final exam period has come to a successful end.
It’s been called a period of hell, a student killing week, and all sorts of other disgraceful names, but for me, it was just a period of variable probability where I could finally go home early.
It’s very nice to be able to eat a hot meal for lunch these days. Although the lunch I do eat is limited to Shiori’s dark matter.
In the classroom, after the test period was over, the students who had been seated in the order of their names returned to their original seats, and I was able to safely return to my favorite seat.
When I came back to my original seat, with gloomy feelings, the other person sitting in the row next to me was in the exact same pose as me―― she was deep in her chair and looked extremely burnt out.
“I can’t, I can’t… Ah, I can’t… Seriously, I can’t… I want to eat pancakes… or beef.”
The angel of affection and elegance was mumbling something quietly, her usual cheerful and energetic appearance was nowhere to be seen.
If she had wings right now, they would be dyed black. She would have a dark aura surrounding her and it looked like if you got involved with her, you’d also get tainted with that darkness.
“Fufufu. I’m at the top. I’m in the same position as Captain Tsubasa. I have soccer going for me. The ball is my friend. Or rather, I am a ball. I have two balls with me.” (TL:Captain Tsubasa is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yōichi Takahashi since 1981. The series mainly revolves around the sport of association football, focusing on Tsubasa Oozora.”)
The film studies club was active in the same position as Captain Tsubasa―― she was mumbling about past glories and arriving at an incomprehensible theory.
I looked around at the other seats.
There were a lot of people in the classroom who looked just like how the two of us did.
The final exams period – it drives some people crazy due to the pressure.
I reflexively looked behind me.
Perhaps the cool-headed and peerless angel is also entering the dark route?
Shiori embedded with darkness――I want to see it.
I looked at her with high hopes in my mind――.
And there I saw the cool-headed and peerless angel reading a book with a book cover attached.
“As usual!”
When I said something out of the blue, I got a response,
“What?” She said in disbelief.
“Ahー…. Noー… Sorry, sorry. It’s just――Look, it’s because of that over there.”
When I pointed towards the person next to her, Shiori turned her gaze from the book to the one next to her.
“AHAHAー.I want to barbecue in a flower garden.”
“Overhead kick. Drive shoot. Exciting.”
When Shiori saw them mumbling in a dark tone, she said, “This is the end.” and turned her attention back towards the book.
“――What…? Well, what’s that you have there? What book are you reading?”
She closed the book with a slam.
“A normal book.”
“Normal book? Manga? Novels?”
“Novel.”
“Really? You like novels?”
“I like to read them.”
As expected of the cool-headed and peerless angel. Speaking of what I imagined, she’s the reading type just like I had imagined. It suits her very well.
“Do you want a new novel right now?”
When I asked her that, Shiori shook her head.
“I just bought this one, so I don’t need a new one right now.”
She said and put her hand on the closed book.
“Fu~. Then, is there anything you want right now?”
I guess it was a natural question for me to ask.
Shiori’s birthday was almost here.
I don’t know if she was being careful as a housemate or not, but she never actually told me about her birthday.
Living alone has made me realize that there is nothing sadder in your life than having your birthday be spent alone.
My parents used to celebrate my birthday with me, but I used to think that it was too much trouble, and that I didn’t need to really celebrate it.
I think it’s the same for Shiori.
I’m thinking of buying her a birthday cake and a small gift, because I think she would like to have someone celebrate her birthday rather than just passing by it quietly.
“What I want…”
Shiori lowered her gaze and thought for a bit and said,
“――A Landolt ring.” (TL:The Landolt C, also known as a Landolt ring, Landolt’s broken ring, or Japanese vision test, is an optotype: a standardized symbol used for testing vision)
‘
“That’s the one with the “C” in the eye test…right?
“That one.”
“Why do you want that!”
Shiori plucks the bridge of her nose and says,
“I feel like my eyesight has gotten worse lately.”
“Then go and see an ophthalmologist.”
“I can’t be bothered to go to one.”
“I understand… what you mean.”
“I want to be able to quickly test my eyesight with a Landolt ring and know what’s wrong with me.”
“So you want glasses?”
She nodded her head.
“I want them, but I don’t need them right now, and they’re too expensive anyways.”
“I see…”
I can’t give her glasses as a gift… Everyone’s eyesight is different after all.
Then let’s go and buy a pair together!――yeah, that’s nonsense. It’s kind of like going to an eye test together on her birthday and buying glasses immediately afterwards……
“Why?”
“――Hmm?
I was thinking about what to do for a while, when I saw Shiori tilt her head and ask,
“Why are you asking me what I want all of a sudden?”
“ーNo, you don’t buy many things, so I was just wondering if you didn’t want anything. That’s why I asked.”
Did I do a good job of deceiving her?
She looked a little sad at my reply and briefly said, “Really,” and opened the book up again.
“――You should know… you dont…”
Her voice was quieter than a mosquito’s buzz, but it still reached my ears.
If I surprise her, I might get to see Shiori’s angelic smile again.
