Chapter 94: Summer Vacation Begins
“What happened to that stalker?”
It was Monday, and as I sat down at my seat, Haru asked me the question. He was probably worried because I had caught the stalker and left right after without giving details.
“When Yukina threatened him, he cried and ran off.”
“Haha, Yukina really knows how to handle things,” Haru said, laughing cheerfully. Honestly, the thought of being on the receiving end of one of her threats was terrifying. I’d better make sure not to anger her.
“What are you two talking about?”
While we continued talking about the stalker, Yukina walked over. She no longer seemed concerned, having gotten over the idea that Friday’s incident was her fault.
As I breathed a sigh of relief, she suddenly slammed her hand down on my desk.
“Yuu-kun! What’s this about me being the King of Hell?”
“Huh?”
“Haru said you called me that!”
I looked over at Haru, who was smirking with an annoying grin. That idiot…seriously, what a stupid lie to make up.
Yukina had a tendency to…well, believe things easily. If she took this too seriously, she’d end up getting depressed again.
“Hey, Yuu-kun, do you really think I’m some King of Hell who drags wicked people to the underworld?”
Honestly, if they’re wicked, they deserve to go to hell, don’t they? I glanced at Yukina, who was pouting. No matter how hard she tries, she could never look like the King of Hell.
“Yukina, do you remember what I said on Friday?”
“Friday…ah…”
Yukina blushed bright red, a stark contrast to how confident she had been moments ago.
“So, yeah, that’s how it is. Besides, I don’t think you’re the King of Hell or anything.”
“What!? What were you about to say just now?!”
I couldn’t bring myself to say, “I think you’re cute.” Maybe if we were alone, but not now, so I changed the subject.
“Yukina, let’s have lunch together today, okay?”
“Sure! But wait, what were you going to say?”
Tch, she didn’t fall for it. With her suspicious look, I could tell she wasn’t going to let this go.
“You’re the best, okay? Is that good enough?”
“Yup!”
Sigh, honestly…Yukina was in a great mood, but here we were in class, with Haru, who had been a childhood friend for years, right next to us. It was incredibly embarrassing.
Still, the phrase “you’re the best” could come in handy. If I said it often enough, maybe I could get out of tricky situations. I made a mental note.
“You two have really changed. It’s kind of scary, actually. You’re acting way too lovey-dovey. It’s crazy how much people can change,” Haru said, as if he’d just seen something unbelievable.
I lightly hit him on the head.
“Whose fault do you think that is? And we’re not being lovey-dovey.”
“Well, yeah…sure, right. But it’s not a bad thing. It’s a good thing, really.”
Haru nodded to himself, laughing. I turned to Yukina and saw her squirming around, as if she were losing focus again. It was cute, but honestly, she seemed to have already forgotten what she had said to me on Friday. I sighed.
The day went on without much incident. I spent my time as usual, and soon it was time for final exams.
Thanks to Yukina’s help with studying and memorization techniques, I was doing surprisingly well. Even though confidence and results don’t always match up, my results were about the same as midterms. Still, I managed to secure my summer vacation, all thanks to Yukina. I really had to thank her for that.
Taichi and Tadokoro also managed to pass, it seemed. This meant that the whole Maid Club had avoided supplementary lessons.
“I owe it all to Yukina-senpai! I can’t thank her enough!”
Tadokoro seemed really grateful and hugged Yukina. It’s not like we’re third-years who have to take extra lessons every day, so I thought it was kind of weird. Then, Tadokoro noticed me staring and our eyes met.
“What’s up?”
“Nothing, really.”
I remembered how serious Tadokoro had been on Friday. What was up with her clinging to me? Well, I guess it didn’t mean much. She’s always like that.
“We’re going to have tons of fun this summer. Akiba-senpai is coming too!”
“I don’t really want to leave my room.”
“Me neither.”
“I’d rather spend time with Yuu-kun, or…I mean, nothing.”
Of course, no one agreed to Tadokoro’s plan. It was just like when we planned to have a study session.
“That’s not going to fly! We’re all going to have fun. It’s decided, no excuses allowed!”
Her tone was serious, and she left no room for us to refuse. Well, I guess I could go along for a bit.
On the last day of the semester, we listened to the principal’s speech in the gym, then received farewells from the teachers. Summer vacation would begin tomorrow.
“Yusuke, any plans for the summer?”
“Not really. Tadokoro mentioned something about the club hanging out.”
“Oh yeah, that underclassman.”
“Right. Oh, I forgot to thank you for helping out with the stalker situation.”
“We help each other when we’re in trouble.”
Wow, what a cool thing to say. Haru’s grades were apparently good too, which was annoying. Despite all my studying, my grades only improved slightly from last year. I guess life doesn’t always go as planned.
“What about your plans, Haru?”
“Well, I’ll be spending time with Megu, same as last year.”
“I see. Well, enjoy your summer with your girlfriend.”
“Ouch, sharp words! You’ll be spending time with Yukina too, right?”
“…Who knows. It’s not like we’re dating.”
Yeah, despite everything, my relationship with Yukina hadn’t really progressed. We were still in that awkward place between childhood friends and something more.
Knowing Yukina, she’d probably come over to my place…But I couldn’t rely on her for everything. If I wanted things to move forward, I’d have to take the initiative too.
“Just don’t spend the whole summer hiding away or working. Anyway, I’ve got to go meet Megu. See you in the fall.”
“Got it. I’ll try to make the most of it. You, too. Don’t mess things up with Megu. I don’t want to have to cheer you up next semester.”
“Haha, Megu and I are fine. If you get lonely, just give me a call.”
With that, Haru waved and left the classroom. I felt a little nostalgic, thinking about not seeing him for over a month. But we’d meet again when the semester started.
“Well then…”
I stood up to leave.
The place I headed to was—
“Yukina.”
Surrounded by her classmates, Yukina’s face brightened the moment she saw me. It was always nice to see her expression change like that.
“Let’s go home.”
She looked visibly surprised. Normally, I’d never suggest something like that. But with summer vacation starting tomorrow, I was in a good mood.
“Okay!”
She quickly ended her conversation and got ready to leave. I could feel jealous stares from the other guys as we walked out of the classroom.
“What’s with the sudden invitation?”
“I’m just in a good mood.”
“Yeah, I guess. Summer vacation starts tomorrow after all.”
Yukina was excited too, swinging her arms as she walked.
“Yuu-kun, let’s make lots of memories this summer.”
“Yeah, let’s.”
That smile of hers was hard to resist. As I walked beside her, I started thinking about what we could do together. Well, whatever it was, as long as we were together, it’d be fun.
Finally, the long-awaited summer vacation with Yukina was about to begin.
