- Chapter 55 - The return of Ainsworth (epilogue)
The return of Ainsworth (epilogue)
Unintentionally, I forgot my manners and asked a question in return.
But my voice was drowned out by even louder voices.
““OOooooh!!””
The cheers of those who attended this ceremony shook from among the audience.
I looked around and saw, to my surprise, the sight of excited nobles met my eyes.
(“No way, not only promoted, but to be also granted territory…!”)
(“I see, so that’s how it is. Even so, to be bestowed territory adjacent to her father’s, that still takes some awful[1] consideration, huh.”)
(“Indeed, indeed.”)
…I heard such voices.
I turned back to face His Majesty.
And straight away, His Majesty averted his eyes.
I see, so it was this, huh.
This was why you had a smile like a brat earlier when we made eye contact!!
“Your Majesty?”
Startled by my words, yet without turning to face this way, His Majesty received an 『additional page』 from the chamberlain as is ——— and said this while hiding his face behind that document[2].
“Actually, there’s more.”
“Yes?”
“This here, is a petition jointly signed by the members of the Senate… Leticia, do you know the upper limit of wartime-peerages freely conferred by the king?”
Glancing this way, His Majesty looked at me from behind the document.
“Viscount, I presume?”
Pushing aside the discomfort of my inner thoughts and answering with a calm expression to the best of my ability, His Majesty shrugged his shoulders and said this in a whisper.
“…right. So I’d like you to not resent me for what I’m about to do.”
“Yes?”
It began when I replied back questioningly.
His Majesty looked up, and raised his voice.
“Ladies and gentlemen!!”
In response to that voice, the noise died down in an instant.
“A moment ago, I had bestowed Lady Leticia Ainsworth a Viscountcy. As I have explained, this is for protecting me, the prince, and the knights from the wyvern’s[3] attack.”
Yep.
That’s what we heard earlier.
On top of this, what on earth does His Majesty intend to do?
Before I can draw any suspicions, His Majesty continued talking.
“However, her contributions to this country do not stop there, as all of you are aware. It was the magic detector which the Lady Ainsworth invented, as well as her own testimony, which drove the criminal involved in the royal castle assault incident to a corner. If not for her efforts, the former Duke and his supporters’ act of treachery would likely have been impossible to expose.”
Somehow, I’ve got a bad hunch…
As my cheeks cramped up, His Majesty held up the document from a moment ago.
“Here, I have a single petition. The contents of this petition, which has been submitted with the joint signature of many Senate members, complains of her efforts and treatment. It says, 『We request that Lady Leticia Ainsworth be granted status appropriate of her ability and contributions』.”
His Majesty looked around the hall.
“Fortunately, majority of the Senate members are in attendance here. I have just confirmed with the chairman a moment ago, and there was no objection to holding a temporary congress and take a vote regarding the proceedings.”
Eh?
Wait, you don’t mean———?!
“Now, I put the question to all you ladies and gentlemen. All those opposed to formally conferring Lady Leticia Ainsworth as a 『Countess』 of the Heielland Kingdom, raise your hand. Those in favour, simply clap your hands and praise her wisdom and courage!!”
The moment His Majesty shouted so.
““OOOOOOOOoooooooooooohhhhh!!!!!!!!””
The hall shook with nothing but applause and cheers.
Turning around, not a single person wasn’t applauding.
They all watched over me with smiles on their faces.
Not a single person raised their hand in objection.[4]
That tough father of mine was in tears, clapping his hands along with everyone else.
Both my brothers looked proud of me.
“…”
As expected, my skin isn’t so thick that I can refuse in such a situation.
In short, I was set up by His Majesty.
“———Your Majesty?”
I turned back to King Conrad resentfully.
“W-, well, wait. Hear me out to the end.”
His Majesty said so while seeming visibly flustered, and held his hand up and raise his voice again.
“Silence!”
With a single word from His Majesty, the hall overflowing with sound receded.
The heated atmosphere remained in that place as is.
“Your will has been confirmed. With zero opposition, and by majority vote, We confer Lady Ainsworth the title of Countess. ——— The royal charter.”
Passing the document His Majesty had to the chamberlain, he then received a final document in its place.
“Viscount Ainsworth, Letcia Ainsworth!”
“Yes.”
I turned back to His Majesty.
His Majesty took a look at my face, and then began reading the document.
“On the occasion of foreign threats being invited in the first crisis since the founding of our kingdom, the Lady has guided the way by making full use of her excellent magic skills. That service is too great for words, and that devotion too priceless to compare. And so We and the Senate, through unanimous agreement, have decided to grant the Lady the rank of 『Countess』. ——— However!”
There, he took a deep breath.
“Limited to the current Ainsworth Countess generation, you shall be exempted from all political obligations that come with the title, and be allowed to exercise that right for yourself, as well as those whom you deem dear to you. ——— My wish, is that the Lady’s skills bring safety and development to Our country.”
Having finished reading the royal charter, His Majesty presented the document to me, and smiled.
“How about this, Countess?”
I see.
In other words, bound by no one, I am free to live as I please. And it doesn’t matter how I use my title.
But, if possible, to invent something useful for the country.
So that’s how it is.
So this is the form in which His Majesty plans to fulfil his promise to me.
Having understood, I smiled wryly.
“I thank Your Majesty for your consideration, and humbly shal do so.”
When I received the document from His Majesty and curtsied, the hall became enveloped in cheers and applause once more.
☆☆☆☆☆
Immediately after Leticia’s promotion to Countess was approved.
Several men and women leaped out of the audience chamber.
“𝚂𝚑𝚒𝚝, that was beyond our expectations.”
One man spat out so while running.
“You just have to pen the headline, no?! I’ll have to do the entire article over! ——— Will we make it in time?”
The woman running beside him was at her wits end.
“Oi, don’t run in the corridors!”
“Shut up! We’re in a hurry!”
They shouted back a reply to the acquainted knight standing guard, and ran through the passage with all their might.
And then———
“Haah, haah”
“Fuu, fuu”
By the time they’d arrived at the destination where their carriage had been waiting, they were so short of breath that you could say 『they were walking as best they could』.
And, a red-haired young girl standing before a carriage stopped at the porte cochere approached them.
“Umm, was there some sort of problem at the peerage conferment ceremony?”
“No, no 𝚏𝚞𝚌𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐 problem at all. The Baroness, has become a 『Countess』!”
The man replied with wheezing words to the questioning girl.
“A Countess, huh…… hhuuuuuuuuhhhhh??!!”
A female’s voice echoed across the waiting area.
☆
“Extra issue! Get the extra issue!! The 『Goddess』 became a Countess!!!!”
As the boy selling newspapers shouted out, the people gathered in the surroundings of the royal castle rushed to him while letting out a roar.
““OOOoooooohhhhh!!!!””
The bundle of papers sold out like they were flying.
That article had a double line drawn through a part of the headline, with 『Countship』 scribbled over where 『Baronship』 had been printed.
Incidentally, the boy handing out a similar extra issue across the street had 『Viscountship』 corrected to 『Countship』.
In case of unforeseen circumstances, the newspaper company had two different pages prepared. But their expectations were splendidly betrayed.
Perhaps the only saving grace was that the newspaper company had anticipated one of the two papers to need corrections, and had a certain number of pens and personnel prepared at a temporary branch office.
Be that as it may, the number of papers needing corrections ended up being double what they expected.
“Oi! Gimme a paper.”
“Eeek?!”
Pushing aside the crowd swarming for the extra issue, a young delinquent[5] returned to the flag-selling stall.
“Oi, I got it!”
The moment he yelled so, his acquaintances suddenly gathered.
“Oi, oi, oi, oi… what do you mean, a 『Countess』?!”
The workshop chief Duncan’s face cramped up, and when Roland peeked at the article from the side,
“Eh? Ojou-sama didn’t become a Baron— eeeeehhhhhhhhh??!!”
His eyes went wide and he shouted in amazement.
“I’m not surprised. After all, our Ojou-sama is 『special』!”
Saying so, the part-timer aunty puffed out her chest for some reason.
Behind her, three senior craftsmen were bawling.
“I never thought, that this day would come while I still lived…”
“I’m so glad I’m still alive.”
“S-, so happ- my baaaaaack!?”
Whether they were crying for joy, or crying out of back pain, the person themselves couldn’t tell anymore.
Jack, who was simply watching over that situation, grinned and murmured.
“Something tells me things are going to get a lot more interesting!”
☆
With the peerage conferment ceremony over, Leticia and her father, as well as her two brothers, returned to the carriages’ waiting area, where they were greeted with a courteous curtsey by a woman standing ahead of the frontmost carriage.
“Everyone, welcome back.”
“Anna, how come you’re here?!”
Leticia rushed over to her dearest attendant and took her hand, and her attendant smiled sweetly and spoke.
“I asked Danna-sama for the honour of being the very first to draw 『Leticia-sama’s carriage』.”
“M-, my carriage?!”
“Yes. This is 『Ainsworth-sama』’s exclusive carriage.”
Saying so, behind her back, Anna pointed out a single carriage.
“No way…”
Letty opened her eyes wide in amazement.
Compared to the Owleyes Marquis House’s one, the carriage was one size smaller, with cute designs like flowers and little birds casually inlaid.
And then of course, in her crest on the door… Coco and Mel were drawn.
“How is it? Letty.”
Before she realised, her father had come to stand next to her, and asked his daughter that question.
“It’s a peerage congratulatory gift from me. I’d be glad if you liked it, but…”
With her father nearly muttering, Letty took a deep breath———
“Papa, I love it!!”
She jumped into her father’s chest.
“Now then, Letty. It’s about time we got going.”
With the second eldest Hubert’s words, Leticia separated from her father.
“See you later.”
Giving the eldest Graham a vigorous nod and replying “Ok!”, she stood in front of the carriage door.
“Now, please climb aboard. ——— my Countess-sama.”
Saying so, Anna opened the door and held Leticia’s hand as she boarded the carriage, then closed it, before climbing onto the coachman’s seat.
“Even so, when did you learn coachman skills?”
Letty opened the small window connecting to the coachman’s seat and asked, to which her attendant grinned and said this:
“To be worthy of being the attendant of Leticia-sama, who’s nonstandard in so many ways, what would I do if I couldn’t even manage this much?”
“Saying that like I’m some rare animal…”
“Because Leticia-sama is a genius. If I think 『I want to become someone capable of supporting such a person』, then there’s nothing I can’t do. ——— Now then, everyone’s waiting outside the castle. We’re heading out!”
“Yeah. Please, Anna.”
“Hyah!”, Anna spurred the horse on.
Under the clear blue sky, the carriage drove towards the castle gate.
Towards those waiting for her, holding flags with two teddy bears on them.
And then, to the place where her workshop companions were waiting for her.
——— Her and their story, begins from here

《Part 1, The End》
TL Notes:
[1]There could be irony here, so this was the best-fit English word I could find. I understand that it might make you confused, but I am just as confused XD ↩
[2]I previously translated this as a letter. As you’ve probably felt unconsciously, that isn’t quite correct. ↩
[3]I was reading this other novel, and I realised that this is the word Japanese tend to use for wyverns particularly. Switching it since it felt odd for a country to be riding dragons so casually. ↩
[4]Unless a vote is already known to be quite closely tied, asking people to raise their hands is always bound to be unfair. Just something that came to mind. ↩
[5]I think I previously translated this as yankee. Changing it since that’s kinda wrong. ↩
WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!
Finally, we have reached the end of “the first volume”, as I’d like to call it. The author really pulled all the stops on this final chapter (it reached over 5000 characters, the most I recall this novel having had so far).
We’ll be going straight into the second part now, and I’ll also begin uploading the chapters for the other story I began recently (I still need to actually set the page up, so don’t go looking for it juuuust yet). The name will be [With a Magic Stone Embedded in my Chest, Who Do I Take Revenge On?].
Also, with the light novel for this book practically published already, WE’VE FINALLY GOT A COVER PICTURE!!!
I’ll update the NU page so that the blandness can finally be purged!
Onto the next adventure!
