Changing Everyday Life. (Part 2)
We had to do some group work in the world history class and the groups consisted of 4 to 5 people
As a matter of course, Sugiuchi and Uchinokura-san came around to our seats and sat in the empty ones.
I’m not sure what we’re going to do because I didn’t listen to the conversation.
However, from what the three of them were talking about, it seemed that each group would summarize their research and make a presentation at a later date.
“I saw your face was really red earlier, are you okay? Do you have a cold?”
Sugiuchi asked as she was flipping through her reference book.
“I’m fine. Yes.”
I think it was my fault, but I kept my mouth shut.
The teacher had left after telling us what we were supposed to do, so now we were mostly in a state of self-study. The classroom was noisy.
I looked for Mise-san and found her standing alone in her seat.
I could see that she was glancing at me the whole time.
“…That’s…”
Is she waiting to be invited?
When our eyes met, she looked as if she wanted to say something, then looked away again. After repeating this a couple of times, she finally stood up as if she had made up her mind and walked up to me timidly with her textbooks and reference books in her hand.
“Huh, Mise-san? What’s wrong?”
When Sugiuchi immediately spoke to her, she got puzzled.
“Sugicchi, are you dumb?”
She looked as if she wanted to say, You can tell by looking at it, can’t you?
“Mise-san, wanna join us?”
Hinagata said, and Mise-san waved her gaze at me as if to point water at me.
“Yes. If you don’t mind, let’s do it together. Because, I’m not much of an asset at all.”
“That’s right, Tonomura, you listen to me. I’m not your teacher.”
“You’re not?”
“Don’t you dare make that assumption.”
Mise-san brought an empty chair and sat down, and without saying a word, Sugiuchi showed his white teeth and gave a thumbs-up… He said she was welcome.
“Th-thank you.”
Thus, Mise-san joined the circle.
I thought Mise-san had good grades. Maybe I just think so because she wears glasses.
I expected that we were going to have a constructive discussion about what they were going to research, but it turned out to be a complete disaster.
We started talking about midterm tests, the upcoming school trip, and other unrelated topics.
Mise-san was listening to the unimportant chatter, moving her eyes from right to left, just like people looking at a tennis match in a circle of spectators.
“What’s the story of that novel, Mise-san?”
“Ah, that? That’s uhhh, simply put, it’s a fantasy in the style of a shonen manga…”
It seems that she really chose a novel that was easy for me to understand.
I was listening to her, thinking, “Wow,” Uchinokura then spoke.
“I know that one too. I borrowed it and read it once.”
“Really?”
“Yes, I took it from my brother”
“It’s a famous one… I-It’s interesting isn’t it?”
“Yes… Uchinokura-san is hard to say right? You can call me Ucchi, only Shiori calls me Kura-chan.”
Mise-san shook her head.
“It’s our first time, so I’ll get used to it little by little…”
“Yes, sure. You don’t have to add ‘Chan’ cause it’s embarrassing, so Ucchi is better I guess.”
The majority of us call her Ucchi, like Sugiuchi. But I’m not comfortable with calling girls by their nicknames, so I use her first name or last name together with ‘San’ at the end.
“Hinagata. Uchinokura-san said she gets embarrassed.”
“Yeah, I know. I like to see Kura-chan looking a little embarrassed.”
That’s why she calls her a minority, apparently.
“It’s really only Shiori. Calling me with that weird nickname.”
Uchinokura complained with half-awed eyes. But Hinagata seemed to be enjoying that reaction as well.
“What names do your friends call you, Mise-san?”
Sugiuchi’s light question made Mise-san’s beaming face disappear.
“…Nothing in particular…”
「「「「…………」」」」
Even though it was self-deprecating, It wasn’t something to laugh about.
I kicked Sugiuchi under the desk.
“Ouch. What the hell??”
“Mise-san is good too, Mise-san. Nothing more nothing less.”
“I was just curious. Don’t kick me! I see, this is you, Tononomura, in your junior mode…”
Good Grief, sighed Sugiuchi.
──Huh? Did I tell him that Mise was my senior?
…Sugiuchi must be the one who told Homma about my part-time job. I guess he heard about my part-time job from Homma along the way.
“How about Nobuko, Mise-san?”
Suddenly, Sugiuchi suggested a nickname.
I wondered why Nobuko, and finally realized after a while that it was because her first name was Shinobu.
“Thank you.”
“Sugichi’s suggestion is pretty good, but if you don’t like it, you should just say you don’t like it.”
“No-No, not at all. Thank you.”
“No problem.”
Sugiuchi was more surprised by this unexpected turn of events.
The class ended without any decisions being made as a result of the lengthy chats we had with Mise-san, who had joined the group.
It seemed to be the same for all the groups, and no one seemed to be making any real progress.
As Hinagata and Uchinokura left the classroom, Mise-san, who had remained behind, then said,
“I had no idea what to do. Thank you, Tonomura-kun.”
“Not at all. It was helpful for us to have you.”
I suddenly wondered what I had been doing.
“I’m glad that you are here, Nobuko. Because Tonomura really doesn’t do anything.”
Sugiuchi also followed up.
Smiling shyly, Mise-san returned to her seat.
“Nobuko is… small and timid… giving her a little animal-like look…”
If you ask me, it’s true.
“She’s small, but she’s big…”
“What is?”
“Huh, what are you saying mister, it’s not very elegant of you to make me say those things.”
…I knew immediately what he meant because that’s how he phrased it.
“Scum-uchi”
“And she’s pretty cute with her glasses off.”
Gehehee, Scum-uchi laughed.
How did he know?
He must have sensed my question, because then he told me,
“Last year in swimming class we talked about it. There was this mysterious, big-breasted, beautiful girl in the next class.”
He explained straight out what he was blabbering about earlier.
I had never looked at her that way, so I had never bothered.
The uniform at my part-time job was loose so it’s hard to see the curves of the body.
“It’s hard to tell with her blazer on, but she’s really huge. Oyaa.”
“A person with a pink brain has their eyes stuck to a different place huh.”
“You look like you don’t give a crap. Big tits are like a curse.”
“What?”
“You’ll see. Boys are burdened with a karma from which they can never escape.”
I have no idea what he means.
“Ahhh, you told Honma where I work, didn’t you?”
“It wasn’t exactly a secret, was it?”
Sugiuchi shrugged his shoulders, seemingly alright with it.
“Is something troubling you? Honma-chan, she came right? In your place of work.”
It seemed that he and Honma had been exchanging messages or something.
“Nothing is troubling me but…”
I preface this by saying that I told Mise-san that I was going to keep her part-time job a secret. I don’t want it to look like I’m the one who told everyone about it.
“Roger… Also… right what did you borrow from Nobuko…? Can I read it too? It looks like Ucchi has read it too…”
So he wants to make conversation with her.
I guess that’s one way of approaching people.
“I’ve been reconsidering. Just a little.”
“What do you mean by that?”
Sugiuchi tilted his head as if he had no idea what was going on.
