Changing Everyday Life. (Part 1)
If she had made me a bento, I asked her to give it to me, this was my wish, and just like that, Hinagata handed the bento to me when we met up in the morning.
Since it was not an everyday thing, I did not pay that much attention to it, but I could easily imagine that it was actually a big deal considering the cost of ingredients and the time and effort involved in the making.
“Is 300 yen fair?”
“Don’t need it.”
I tried to account for the bento, but Hinagata wouldn’t accept it at all.
“It bothers my soul, you know.”
“No…”
“I know you have a hard time with your club activities, and when I think of you also getting up in the morning and working hard to make this for me…”
“…I’m not trying very hard. It’s just a little bit of a little bit. I can handle it.”
And Hinagata showcases her skills.
Is she telling the truth?
I’m honestly skeptical.
One time she put in the wrong amount of sugar and salt. She found that out during lunch break and made a big fuss, which I couldn’t have imagined considering Hinagata’s character.
“Mom says she doesn’t want you to pay for the food, either.”
“Is that so?”
If aunt says so, so be it.
We agreed that I didn’t have to worry about the bento. Well, we had the same exchange many times already.
When I arrived at school and took my seat, I asked her about our previous discussion.
“How was it after, when you said you couldn’t carry on the conversation? Did you get any results?”
…I know I was the one who gave the advice to her, but I’d be happier if it didn’t get a response.
“Yes. It worked.”
Hinagata’s cheeks loosen as she recalled it .
“I-is that so. It worked out huh…”
From the perspective of giving proper advice up front, I’m glad to be able to help, but I hated it so much that it progressed and now I’m troubled…
“…Thank you, Ryu…Tonomura-kun.”
That smile is complicated and a bit painful for me.
“…Don’t mention it.”
“…”
“…”
I’m not at all happy about this development, so the reply I gave without looking at her face was more bland than I thought it would be.
I’m willing to resign from the advisory board.
But then, Hinagata would be troubled, and if I don’t help her, she might decide to seek advice from another boy.
If that happens, that would be a problem.
I wonder if this was what possessiveness was all about.
I let out a small sigh as I waited for our homeroom teacher, Mise-san (the glasses version), who just arrived, then glanced at me.
After confirming that there was no conversation being held between me and my neighbor, she quietly approached my seat, holding something very precious on her chest.
“Good Morning. Mise-san.”
When I stood up to greet her, she cautioned, “Sit down, sit down. You don’t have to stand up.”
“M-Morning. Tonomura-kun, no need for the full ‘Good morning,’ just a simple ‘Morning.’ is fine.”
Ahh, that’s how it was at school.
“Mise-san, Morning.”
When Hinagata greeted her, she acted strangely as if she was greeted by someone whom she did not expect it from.
“M──M M Mo Mo Oooo, G-Good, Morning.”
Mise-san finally returned the greeting and gave a polite, clean bow.
“Mise-san, it’s okay to just say morning to Hinagata…”
“Yes, yes,” Hinagata agreed.
“I-I see…”
Mise-san has been dripping with sweat since this morning. It seems that she feels very uncomfortable in the classroom.
She never felt this pressured during her part-time job.
“Is there anythi-… Something wrong?”
“What you asked me yesterday, here.”
What Mise-san was holding near her chest with utmost care was a novel.
“Ahh. Thank you. You brought it for me.”
“Y-Yes. I think it’s interesting, but if it doesn’t suit you, you don’t have to read it.”
“No, I’ll read it. I feel like you chose this one especially for me with care.”
“That’s… That’s… Hehehe.”
She was humble, but also very embarrassed.
“I’ll tell you what I think of it after I read it.”
“There’s no need to be in such a hurry. I’ll flnd it to you for as long as you want, there’s no deadline..”
I could tell that she was trying not to put pressure on me, and that she was being very considerate of me, to the point of desperation.
I finished up the conversation by saying, “Thank you,” then I saw that Mise-san had still not returned to her seat, even though we had finished our business.
“Anything else?”
“I was…. that yesterday, I couldn’t read the air, I’m always like that… and I regretted it when I got home…”
She was stammering and was trying hard to say something, so I didn’t rush her and waited for her to speak clearly.
But as it turned out, that was not a good idea.
“You and Honma-san, the new hire, are dating, aren’t you, Tonomura-kun? I’m sorry for interrupting the two of you when you were going back together. I should have stayed back a little longer, but I also had the train to catch…”
W-what a misunderstanding!
Read the air!
“T-that’s not true! Mise-san! Not at all!”
I felt a wave like a blizzard from the ice-cold guard next to me.
When I glanced fearfully at Hinagata, I saw that she was looking straight at me and was covered with blue flames all over her body.
“Like as I was trying to say, Mise-san. It’s a misunderstanding.”
I tried to correct her misunderstanding, unintentionally using the honorific I normally use for her.
“I-I-Is that so?”
“Yes, that’s how it is, It just happened by chance.”
I felt the blue flames subside.
It was a short time before I could catch my breath.
“You were walking around arm-in-arm too though…?”
BOOOOOM, The blue flame that even sounded onomatopoeic, erupted again from Hinagata.
Now it was my turn to sweat like a baboon.
“l-It just looked that way, didn’t it?”
I had to say something quickly, and I responded like a stupid person on the internet.
“Even though I was following you guys so closely…?”
Mise, don’t talk anymore.
Why were you watching so closely? I let my guard down…
“M-Maybe it was dark, so you must have just mistaken it?”
Kinda convinced, she replied with, “Maybe so?”
I mean, come on, teacher, hurry up.
After saying, “I’m glad,” Mise-san finally returned to her seat.
I had explained to her earlier, but Mise-san still has a knot in her head that she thinks there is a limit to the number of people I can be friends with.
“…”
Without uttering a word, Hinagata looked forward with a blank expression on her face.
Is she angry…?
“Like I said to Mise-san, It was all a misunderstanding.”
“Hmm.”
She’s definitely angry.
“Why did Honma-san come to your workplace , Ryunosuke?”
“It seemed like her house was close by…”
I felt like I was being interrogated.
“Hmmm. Mise-san also came to you to check if you were dating.”
Hinagata was mad at me… because I befriended another girl?
Is this some kind of jealousy thing if I may ask?
“I suppose she just wanted to apologize for interrupting.”
In addition, I also explained to her about Mise-san’s misunderstanding. I don’t know what she thought about it though, since Hinagata was still as expressionless as ever.
“Ryunosuke, you are getting along with a lot of girls…”
Her voice was so low that I wouldn’t be able to hear her unless I listened carefully.
“I mean, if we were in the same club, it would be difficult to say, don’t be friends. Unless you don’t like each other. I think that it’s kind of similar to part-time jobs.”
Hmmm? Hinagata seemed to be troubled but a little convinced.
“I don’t know what kind of relationship you will have with whom… I don’t know… Ryunosuke…”
Hinagata murmured in a whisper, unsure of it herself.
The teacher came in and informed the students of a message. Hinagata was next to me, still not in a good mood.
“Hinagata, are you perhaps… Jealous?”
I said that carelessly.
“…a”
After taking a small breath, Hinagata’s face grew redder and redder as she looked forward.
Then she suddenly got up from her seat.
So everyone, including me, was surprised, she then said in a quiet voice that only students nearby could hear, “I’m going to the bathroom,” and walked out of the classroom with a handkerchief in her hand.
