Let me be a mob! - Chapter 6- Change in plot?
‘Ah, it’s starting…’
Currently, I was standing while leaning on a fire chimney over a random house as I gazed at the scene which I have only read in the novel before.
I had the patrol guard’s uniform on with a thin cloth wrapped around my mouth and nose. I was feeling like a specific sensei from a famous anime but I didn’t have any option other than to hide my face. Not only because of the heroine who may be or not see me when I would steal the artifact from the Faceless, but also because of the guards around who might connect the dots and warrant my search afterward.
I knocked out one of their guards and used his uniform to steal an artifact from someone who was yet to commit a crime. It wouldn’t take a smart ass to realize that the suspect a.k me, already had the idea that Fiona would get kidnapped. Further implying that I was also involved in it or at least was a primary lead to the Mambas.
I will try to leave as fewer traces as I could and would be moving a lot in the meantime until I don’t enter the Academy where no one would come knocking on me, a hero candidate. Hehe…
Cough
Coughing I regained my composure as I realized that the event of the heroine’s kidnap has begun.
The Faceless who had killed one of the personal bodyguards of Fiona recently, swiftly killed the coachman after bringing a pause to their carriage. I didn’t catch the moment when The Faceless dealt with the bodyguard he had the facade of right now or when such an ordeal took place even when I was basically following his trail for quite a few days. I had to keep my eyes on the prize after all.
Once I saw how things have unfolded ever since Fiona left the library I have been amazed. The plan seemed flawless to the boot.
The place where the incident was taking place was far away from the nearest check post, and the populace was the least at this cross-point as well. Since it wasn’t much distance from Duke’s mansion from the library the security seemed a little bit on the leaner edge? Maybe I was overthinking but the fact remained that despite being so weak The Faceless was successfully kidnapping one of the most prominent figures in the whole Dukedom and maybe in the kingdom.
There is a reason why despite being only an E-rank The Faceless was able to subdue a B-rank bodyguard and a maid who was specially trained to aide her mistress in times of distress.
The reason was the slow poison they have been consuming for one and a half a week which The Faceless bribed the cook to implant in their food. The poison was no joke since it couldn’t be detected until an at least A-rank healer doesn’t appraise it. The poison was not something that triggers with time but rather when The Faceless wants it to, with the help of an artifact called ‘ Death Counter’.
He played everything skillfully from behind the scene and made this flawless plan to kill Fiona only to be killed in the end because of his own haste to devour the girl. In hurry to have Fiona, originally in the novel, The Faceless, takes her to not so far settlement which previously was marked with an artifact that he failed to notice and in the end, lost his life.
I mean, I can understand that people have their taste but not like someone would like to be graved six feet down just because they wanted to engrave their six inches…
‘Looks like he is done…’
As I saw him carrying Fiona over his shoulder I readied myself to chase but from a decent distance since I know where they would end up. My worries remained in the fact that I somehow have used the chaos to snatch the mask off him, but I have confidence I would exploit my chance and do something about it.
“Hupp!”
Inhaling deeply I latched on the nearby building after circulating mana in my feet. Despite spending a decent time with this mythical energy, I was far from fully mastering it yet. Just enough to push me off the humanly boundaries.
As I thought, The Faceless who currently had the baldy bodyguard’s mask on, jumped toward the nearest settlement which actually was a run-down building which actually was demolished some months ago. The fact that these kinds of places mainly become sketchy hideouts, the local officers put a surveillance artifact in the building which would be going to prove useful now.
I can already hear the sirens blaring at an alarming rate and the echoes of heavy footsteps nearing the place where Fiona’s carriage was. It was an emergency mechanism that alerted the local stations as soon Fiona’s bodyguard’s vitality neared a danger level.
Quite reliable…or maybe not.
I was five buildings away from the criminal as I used my levitation whenever I felt myself nearing him and kept the distance enough for him to remain unaware.
The rundown apartment neared as my heart began to tremble. The guards weren’t far as well and soon the se-
‘Wait….why it seems…!’
My eyes widened when I realized that something was different. No, not just something but the whole situation which I thought should have followed the plot has just now shifted because The Faceless didn’t enter the building he was supposed to, rather he went past it and continue to approach the slum area of the city.
My eyes widened as I realized that maybe there was something has happened when I was not paying attention or maybe this real life was different from the story. It can be since this was the first incident I was following of the canon and yet it shifted…
‘Or maybe is it because of my presence…?’
I couldn’t help but think since in the main story there was no character named Jin Carter who followed the Faceless and saw the whole event unfolding.
Even though I was deeply contemplating the possibilities, my feet never halted as I followed the man who had the Ducal princess on his shoulder. I still had my distance from him but the fact that the footsteps and alarms were fading slowly told me how grave the situation has developed.
‘Oh, shit…’
I saw the man carrying Fiona inside a broken clock tower which was in the middle of the slum and was far away from any inspection could reach. Since the people living in slum tears whatever they see fancy, the guards weren’t able to plant artifacts in the areas and thus this seemed the best place to have someone, hostage.
I halted myself just at the distance where I could see the scene inside the maintenance room where The Faceless had dropped Fiona.
My mind was in turmoil as I never thought of the possibility of having the plot shifted this drastically at all. In the end, I was able to come up with only two options.
Either I go in and try to fight The Faceless and snatch his mask forcibly. But that may jeopardize all my intention to stay hidden from the main cast and maybe get me involved in case of suspect?
The other route was to alert the guards in some manner so they track the Faceless down and in that way, a bigger chaos may ensue since the people in the slum have a lot of time to form a crowd in any scene they find interesting. Yes, that would be great and once I get my hands on the mask I would flee away without any further ado. But…
‘Wait…what am I doing…?’
Never once my eyes left the small room where the ba*stard had brought Fiona as I pondered on my decision. But as soon I saw him tearing her dress such viciously and how helplessly she was shedding with all hopes vanishing in her pure gaze, I found myself moving.
Not just moving but aggressively dashing inside the room.
‘I am so gonna regret this…but screw it!’

A/N:- His past was not a simple one and he is not some mastermind plotter who only thinks of his benefits. I hope you guys are liking the story so far, so do drop a comment on your way back~

still don’t understand the concept of these wannabe mobs who reincarnate and then go on to save the heroine—who was going to survive anyway without their intervention. I mean, if they saved a random character, that would be understandable, but this? Honestly… 😔😔
