【Tae Mori】
When I took a deep breath, there was a strange smell. Maybe the city air really didn’t smell good after all?
“Huh?!”
The man let out a surprised voice, so I turned my gaze toward him.
“Heheheh! A man! There’s a man here!”
“A man! Hyahha!”
City women(?) with heavy makeup were surrounding the man.
“H-hey, what do you think you’re doing, surrounding a man like that?!”
I was shocked, and at the same time anger welled up inside me toward those women who were being rude to the man.
“Hah! Women like you should die! We’re about to have some fun with this guy!”
“That’s right, that’s right! Unlike you stinky country girl! We already made this our turf, and we’re not virgins anymore!”
“Yeah! We’ve already attacked more guys than we can count on both hands!”
Even after my angry shout, the city women didn’t back down. Worse, they were saying they were about to assault the man.
“Attack? You can’t do that to a man! Men are supposed to be protected!”
In my anger, I grabbed the shoulder of one of the City Women C and threw her aside. I used the gap to pull the man out and hid him behind me.
“It’s okay! I’ll absolutely protect you!”
“Ooh, did you hear that? She said ‘watassu’! Total country bumpkin vibes, right?”
City Women B mocked my dialect. She didn’t seem used to fighting, and swung her arm in a big motion to punch me. The man tried to step forward, but I stopped him.
“It’s fine! Stay back!”
I grabbed the woman’s arm and threw her.
“Huh?”
“I’m actually a bit confident in my judo, you know.”
Seeing the situation turning against them, City Women A tried to run, so I grabbed her from behind and choked her out.
“Alright, I’ll take these ones to the police, so you’re safe now.”
I was glad I had come to the city to protect men. If women like this were everywhere, men would really be in danger.
“You’re incredibly strong, aren’t you?”
The man spoke to me in an admiring voice.
“Not really. But since I’m not smart, I thought I should get stronger and work in a job where I could protect men.”
Talking about my dream was embarrassing, but being praised felt good.
“Um, my name is Yoru Kurose. Thank you very much for saving me.”
He was strong. And yet, even after being saved, he was able to thank me. Regardless of him being a man, as a person, I thought he was amazing.
“Kurose-kun, huh~ You’re really a good person. I could tell when I touched your hand earlier. You’re pretty strong yourself, aren’t you? I thought I might have interfered unnecessarily, but you thanked me properly. That makes me happy.”
I was truly happy. This was the kind of man I had admired. Yoru Kurose-kun. I wanted to work for the sake of men like him. I wanted to protect him.
“For now, there’s a police box just outside the park. Shall we go there together?”
“Yeah. Honestly, dragging three of them by myself would’ve been tough.”
With Kurose-kun’s help, we brought the perverts to the police box. Afterward came commendations and interviews and all sorts of trouble, but meeting such a wonderful man became the best memory for me.
On my first day on the job, people praised me for the news coverage and for saving a man. It gave me credibility, and I quickly got along with my seniors, who were all good people. I was really happy to fit in so fast. And then—
“I’m SEI, the president.”
“And I’m YUI, the vice president.”
It surprised me that the president and vice president greeted the new recruits in person. Even I, living in the countryside, knew SEI-san.
During judo tournaments when I traveled, I had seen her posters in convenience stores, advertising magazines or cosmetics. I had also seen YUI-san on billboards as a model together with SEI-san. Meeting celebrities got me excited, but compared to Kurose-kun, the surprise was smaller.
“I’d like you to take on a special assignment.”
SEI-san greeted us and then immediately got to the work talk. Apparently, I would be assigned to a recently established department. When I went where I was told, a beautiful superior with a ponytail, Tsurugi-san, welcomed me.
“We will be acting as bodyguards for male high school students from now on. The team is made up of relatively young members. Mori-san, starting today you’ll be assigned here and take part in the mission as part of your training.”
“Yes, ma’am!”
“I’ll teach you everything I can. I look forward to working with you.”
“Likewise, thank you very much.”
When the holiday ended, my first assignment took me to a huge academy. I was overwhelmed by the size of the buildings and the sports ground, and I felt dizzy. I pulled my uniform cap low over my face so I wouldn’t look at anything, and followed behind Tsurugi-san.
We greeted the principal and the homeroom teacher of the student we were assigned to protect, and finally, it was time to meet the high school student himself. I was lucky to be assigned to guard a man right from the start.
“Next!”
Tsurugi-san pushed me forward to greet him.
“Yes! I’m Second-Class Protection Officer Tae Mori, reporting in!”
Tense and stiff, I lifted my face to greet him.
“Eh?”
“Huh?”
The moment I let my eyes wander just a little to look at the man, I relaxed too much.
“Eh—uwaa! It’s that super cute mysterious boy!”
Yoru Kurose-kun, now clearer to me than on that night in the park, was dangerously handsome. To meet him again—this had to be fate!
Smack!
“Guh!”
“My apologies. Our employee made an inappropriate remark. She only joined us yesterday and is still inexperienced. However, since none of us have much experience guarding men, we hired her for this case due to her youth. If you find her offensive, we can replace her immediately.”
I totally screwed up!!!
…
“Pffft—ahahahahaha!”
One of the male students burst out laughing.
The other two also started laughing, and the first one pointed at us.
“That smack! The sound was amazing!”
“Tae Mori-san, thank you again for the other day. Please, you don’t need to change how you talk. And Tsurugi-san, really, there’s no need to be so formal.”
Yoru Kurose-kun kindly spoke to us.
“But still—!”
“Tsurugi-san, my name is Yoru Kurose. You’re from my mom’s company, aren’t you?”
When Kurose-kun introduced himself, Tsurugi-san immediately stiffened.
“I understand why you’d be so formal, but we’re just students. We don’t live every moment under strict discipline.”
Even I could tell how tense Tsurugi-san was.
“At Aoba High, the girls already have some resistance to being around men. So we don’t expect you to be on high alert while we’re at school. What we really want is your protection during commutes and when any of us have to go out.”
Hearing Kurose-kun’s explanation, Tsurugi-san thought for a moment and then let out a big sigh.
“…Haa. Understood. Tae Mori, sorry for hitting you earlier.”
She apologized, but the one at fault was me.
“Huh? Not at all. It didn’t even hurt, so please don’t worry.”
“Tsurugi-san. Mori-san. We look forward to having your protection from now on.”
Yoru Kurose-kun extended his hand for a handshake, and embarrassed, I shook it.
