Chapter 15: Yuri’s Request
“…Next up, sit-ups!”
The physical fitness test continued after that.
–Sit-ups.
The girls held my waist and counted, but I timed out at twenty-five reps.
“Hehe, I managed thirty.”
“Kouta, your face is beet red and you’re trying way too hard~!”
“…Watching you is making me laugh.”
–Shuttle run.
I hit seventy laps, above the boys’ average, but I couldn’t beat the athletic girls.
“Too slow~”
“Your feet weren’t even moving?”
“…Sloppy.”
–Standing long jump.
My record was around average again.
“I jumped farther than that, though?”
“Kouta, you’re really bad at PE, huh.”
“…Your athleticism is a shame.”
None of the results stood out.
It stung to be laughed at, but the teacher stepped in to back me up.
“Boys in this world are so rare that most of them don’t even exercise. The average scores for fitness tests are often lower than the girls’ anyway.”
–Right, boys in this world were fawned over and protected, but they almost never built the habit of moving their bodies.
So the scores ended up low inevitably, and it was only natural that I, who usually just played games at home, lost to the girls.
“But! The next event will be different, right?”
Aya grinned slyly.
“Yeah, yeah, I don’t want to get turned around here.”
Yuri clenched her fist.
“…The main event is next.”
Otowa’s gaze sharpened too.
Yes, what remained was–
“The final event, the 50-meter dash!”
The whole class erupted in excitement all at once.
My chest heated up deep inside too.
I’d actually had my sister practice 50-meter sprints with me for today!
This affected the dignity of my student life from here on out.
“Heh… running is the one thing I’m a little confident in.”
“Oh?”
“You said it.”
“Then we’ll go all out to crush you.”
Aya turned back and whispered just to me, Yuri, and Otowa.
“The fastest one gets to ask the other three for ‘one favor.’ What do you say? Our little secret deal.”
“Ooh, that’s fun!”
Yuri agreed right away and laughed.
“…No reason to refuse.”
Otowa nodded quietly too.
“Hey, wait… you’re dragging me into this too?”
“Of course. It’s rare to get Kouta to hear out a request.”
“Hehe♪, what should I ask for~?”
“…Kouta, no escaping.”
The three closed in on me gradually.
There was no way out.
“…Fine. But if I win, you’ll all absolutely have to hear me out.”
“”’Bring it on!”'”
–The next day’s lunch break.
As I slumped over my desk, I reflected on yesterday’s physical fitness test.
“If I win… you’ll absolutely have to hear out my request, Kouta.”
With that declaration, Yuri clocked the class’s fastest time in the 50-meter dash and thrust her triumphant smile right in my face.
And the “request” that came out of her mouth was something completely unexpected.
“Tomorrow, eat the bento I made, just the two of us!”
It was an oddly endearing request. It let me glimpse an unexpected side of Yuri.
I couldn’t find a reason to refuse, so I half-bewilderedly agreed anyway–.
But now that lunch break had arrived like this, with the whole class full of people, I had no idea how we were supposed to be alone.
“…What the hell is Yuri planning for real?”
As I grumbled under my breath, a shadow fell over my desk right then.
“Kouta, you ready?”
I turned to see Yuri standing there with a beaming smile, cradling a large bento box.
“No, even if you say I’m ready… we can’t eat here. There are classmates watching.”
I replied in a low voice, but Yuri lifted the corner of her mouth in a grin.
“That’s why it’s fine. I’ve already taken care of it.”
“…Taken care of?”
Before I could ask again, Yuri grabbed my wrist tightly. Her slender fingers had surprising strength.
“H-hey, wait a sec!”
I jumped up in a panic, but Yuri just dragged me along and out of the classroom.
“H-hey! Where are we going!”
“Hehe, you’ll see if you come along.”
Her voice sounded unusually cheerful without turning back, and I let myself be pulled down the hallway.
We turned two corners and reached the hallway in the special classroom building, which hardly anyone used during lunch break.
Yuri opened the door with familiar steps, revealing an empty science prep room.
“It’s quiet here, right? We can eat alone.”
Yuri set the bento down on the desk by the window as if it were the most natural thing.
“…No way, are we allowed in here on our own? And what about the others…”
As I said it in disbelief, Yuri grinned widely and deliberately lowered her voice.
“Actually, I asked Rika and Otowa last night. ‘Don’t interrupt us tomorrow, no matter what.'”
“…For real?”
“Of course, when I said it was my reward for winning the 50-meter, they grudgingly went along. So today, relax and eat with me, okay?”
As she said that, Yuri started unwrapping the bundle.
Her movements had an oddly triumphant air.
“Ta-da!”
She flung the wrapping open with flair, revealing… a bento that looked just like a rainbow.
“…Huh, what is this?”
I blurted it out without thinking.
It had red, yellow, green, even purple. I could make out the tamagoyaki, cherry tomatoes, and broccoli. But next to them sat stir-fried purple cabbage and some overly colorful jelly-like agar dish.
“Color is important, you know? I thought about how it’d look on SNS too!”
Yuri puffed out her chest.
“No, the visuals are great, but… is this food?”
“It is food!”
The retort came flying back right away. Yuri’s face, with her cheeks slightly puffed, looked oddly childish and funny.
“…Well, I’ll test for poison, I guess.”
I picked up the chopsticks and took a bite of the tamagoyaki.
–Sweet. No, too sweet. It was like she’d dumped in sugar by mistake.
“Whoa… this is…”
“Wh-what’s with that face! It’s bad!?”
Yuri leaned in in a fluster.
“No… I thought it was dessert.”
When I said it deadpan, her face flushed bright red in an instant.
“H-hey! I made it seriously!”
She poked my arm while her eyes darted around.
“But come on, this is too out there for a bento. Next time, enter it in the ‘snack category’?”
“Wha…! You know what!”
Yuri’s voice cracked with anger and embarrassment.
But then she quickly turned away with a huff and murmured softly.
“…But eat it all, okay. I won’t forgive you if you leave any.”
I held back a slight laugh and kept going with the chopsticks.
Sure, the taste was weird, but each bite somehow conveyed her desperation.
“…Well, I’ll look forward to next time.”
I said it with a deliberate teasing edge, and Yuri lightly smacked the desk as she stood up.
“Next time, I’ll absolutely make you say it’s delicious! Promise!”
Her face stayed bright red.
But her eyes were dead serious, and I found myself looking away.
By the way, since I couldn’t leave Mom’s bento unfinished either, my stomach was on the verge of bursting right now.
