Chapter 14: Physical Fitness Test
That night, I knelt on a cushion in the living room.
In front of me stood Mom with her arms crossed. To the side sat my sister Rika, still in her club jersey. At this point, there was already no escape.
“Kouta!”
Mom’s sharp voice cut through the air.
“A hotel, of all places… what would you have done if something really happened with a girl!?
Do you even understand how much I care about you!”
“…I’m sorry.”
When I mumbled it in a voice as small as a mosquito’s buzz, Mom let out a sigh.
Then my sister slammed the table with a bang and leaned forward aggressively.
“Hey, Mom, you’re being too soft! Kouta, do you even realize how defenseless you are!?
In this world, what do you think people would assume if a boy went to a hotel? Can’t you imagine it!?”
My sister bore down on me with a demonic expression. She was yelling, but why were her ears so red?
“Th-that’s why I said nothing happened!”
“‘Nothing happened’ doesn’t cut it! That’s exactly the kind of opening that gets you into real danger someday!”
I could only hang my head. Their arguments were so irrefutably right that I couldn’t counter them at all.
In the end, that night I endured another thorough lecture from Mom and my sister for nearly three hours.
Late that night, finally released, I returned to my room and collapsed onto my bed.
“…It’s over…”
Fatigue weighed down my eyelids until they nearly closed.
But then.
“Big brother.”
The door opened suddenly, and my little sister Mio slipped in. Still in her white pajamas, she sat down smoothly on the edge of the bed.
“I heard you went to a hotel?”
“Uh, that… nothing happened!”
“Hehe. I see. That’s good…”
Mio smiled faintly. Her face should have been adorable, yet it carried an undercurrent of terror.
“But… if I’d heard that ‘something happened,’ I probably couldn’t have held back.”
Her small hand gripped mine tightly. Her nails dug in just enough to sting.
“So… don’t go off anywhere on your own anymore?
Big brother belongs to me alone.”
–A chill ran down my spine.
This was scarier, in a way, than being yelled at.
I couldn’t say a word in response and could only freeze there, my hand clasped in Mio’s.
The next morning, I stared at the small GPS device lying on my desk and let out a deep sigh.
In the end, Mom and my sister’s verdict had been “always carry the GPS.”
…My freedom was truly gone.
“…What will my high school life be like from here?”
A clear blue sky. Amid the buzz of girls echoing across the schoolyard, I stood in my gym clothes, lined up with the rest.
“Okay! Today is our annual physical fitness test!”
The physical education teacher’s cheerful voice boomed through the microphone.
…Honestly, I just wanted to go home already.
After all, in this class, I was the only boy surrounded by nearly thirty girls. And today we were in gym clothes.
The girls’ stares felt even more piercing than usual.
“Hey, hey, I wonder how many kilos Kouta’s grip strength is.”
“Is he stronger than me? Oh, but maybe weak and frail is cuter.”
“He looks like he’d be super slow at running. I want to protect him~”
The voices of the girls behind me made my ears burn red despite myself.
This was the vibe even before it started…
“Kouta~! If you nail your records today, I’ll give you a reward, okay?”
Aya slapped my shoulder with a smack and grinned mischievously.
“Pointless. Getting all worked up over a silly test like this is meaningless.”
Otowa glanced at me sidelong with a cool expression, but her gaze lingered unusually long.
“Alright! First up is side-to-side jumps! Kouta, do your best~!”
Yuri thrust her fist up like a cheerleader.
Already drawing all eyes, my “solo boy’s physical fitness test” thus began.
“Alright, for side-to-side jumps, our lead-off is Takeda!”
Prompted by the teacher’s voice, I took my place at the line.
Whispers from the surrounding girls reached my ears.
“Hehe, he’ll probably tire out quick.”
“Make sure you hit the line properly~”
“He looks so unreliable.”
I shrugged lightly at their free-for-all comments.
“If you’re expecting that much from me, it’s a problem. …If I go all out, the next person might lose motivation, you know?”
“Huh? What the hell!”
“You said it!”
“A boy getting too cocky!”
As expected, they bit.
Girls who got fired up were so easy to handle.
“Ready, go!”
At the whistle, I started moving my feet.
My body felt lighter than I thought, and I fell into the rhythm.
“…Huh, he’s surprisingly fast?”
“He’s kinda showing off, but he’s doing it right.”
“Guh…”
I caught the girls watching me from the corner of my eye and deliberately flashed a relaxed smile.
“What’s wrong? The cheers are kinda quiet. Scared you might lose to me?”
“Wha…!”
“Annoying!”
“I’ll definitely beat you next!”
The ending whistle blew.
I wiped off a light sweat and caught my breath with exaggerated calm.
“Phew… sorry, did I break your spirits a bit?”
“We aren’t broken! You’re just too cocky and it’s annoying!”
“…But maybe I take it back a little.”
“Ugh~, that’s so unfair!”
“Okay, next up, grip strength~! Everyone, do your best~”
At the teacher’s words, the girls around me all turned to look my way at once.
“Hey, Kouta, you look skinny, but you’ll be okay, right?”
Aya grinned with a naughty glint.
“My guess is around 25?”
Yuri cackled as she said it.
“…If it’s under 20, I’ll laugh a little.”
Otowa tossed out her cool, cutting remark.
“Hey, come on… what do you take me for?”
I put on a brave front for now and positioned the grip meter.
–Squeeze.
Beep.
“…22.7 kilos.”
“Buhahaha!”
“Eh… seriously weak!”
“I’m a girl and stronger than that!”
Laughter and jabs flew at me from all sides.
I couldn’t stop my ears from turning bright red.
“H-hey… I was just nervous, that’s all!”
“Nervous makes it drop that much?”
“So cute~ Kouta, you’re really feeble, huh.”
“Sigh… and he talks big about ‘protecting’ us.”
“Guh…”
I was fully in tease mode now.
But I couldn’t just take it lying down.
“Y-you girls aren’t that impressive either since you’re girls! Don’t laugh at just me!”
“Oh? You said it, huh?”
Aya’s eyes gleamed.
“Then let us show you not to underestimate girls’ grip strength!”
Yuri snatched the grip meter with gusto.
“…No holding back.”
Even Otowa lined up with a serious look.
The results–
“32.4 kilos!”
“37.8 kilos!”
“35.1 kilos!”
“…No way, that’s fake.”
“See? We all win~!”
“Stronger than Kouta? Awesome!”
“Hehe, how pitiful.”
The girls crowed in victory, and I could only turn beet red.
“…Alright. Next event, we’re settling this.”
“”’We won’t lose!!!”'”
Both I and the girls had our fires fully lit now.
