I Went Into the Mountains to Commit Suicide and Picked Up an All-Purpose Perverted Maid Who Loves Serving Her Master - Chapter 31: Date with Azuma
Chapter 31: Date with Azuma
Azuma’s a big celebrity, so public transport like trains or buses is out of the question. If she’s spotted, it’d cause a frenzy. Even with her face covered, there’s no telling when someone might recognize her.
So, our date’s transportation has to be a car. But, of course, I don’t own one. I’m just a jobless NEET mooching off Mei… Borrowing Mei’s car and driving it myself is an option, but it’s been ages since I sold my old beater. I’ve got zero confidence driving her ultra-luxury sedan. If I scratched it, how much would that even cost?
In the end, I have no choice but to rely on Mei. It’s pathetic for a guy, but…
That’s how it goes. Mei’s handling all the driving for the date. Azuma and I ride in the back seat of her car.
Azuma seems to think Mei’s my secretary and doesn’t question it.
Oh, right—when Mei picked me up at the reunion, she called herself my secretary.
Anyway, with Mei driving, we head out for the date. First stop: an aquarium. It’s too early for dinner, so this works. And, uh, it’s reserved exclusively for us.
I was stumped about where to go for the date and asked Mei for advice. She went and booked the whole aquarium. Sure, a private reservation means we can enjoy it without worrying about prying eyes, but… her spending is insane. How much did this cost? Before I met Mei, I was scraping by, barely able to eat. I could never spend money like this.
Oh, and today’s other stops? All exclusively reserved too.
Thanks to that, I don’t have to worry about tabloids snapping pics of me and Azuma on our date. But the insane costs are stressing me out. Mei’s raking in ridiculous money, so maybe this is nothing to her, but still.
Won’t Azuma be put off by this crazy spending? Is this okay?
We arrive at the aquarium.
Mei says she’ll wait in the car, so Azuma and I head into the private aquarium alone. Aside from a skeleton crew of staff, it’s empty. Just fish swimming gracefully in near silence.
Aquariums aren’t usually loud, but with just the two of us, the quiet feels different. Dim lighting, a hushed atmosphere, softly lit tanks. And beside me, gazing at the tanks, is Azuma—someone I’d normally only see on a screen.
The reality of being on a date hits me, and my heart starts racing.
I catch myself staring at Azuma instead of the fish. She turns to me.
“Hm? What’s up?”
“Uh, it’s just… this feels like a dream.”
“Pfft, what’s that supposed to mean?”
She bursts out laughing. We keep chatting awkwardly while looking at the tanks. What do you even talk about on a date? I have no clue. Lost in that thought, we finish the aquarium in no time.
The date doesn’t end there, of course. It’s just getting started. We hop back in the car, and Mei drives us to the next spot.
We take a break at a café, do some shopping…
Is reserving everything for a first date too much? Did I overdo it? I hope she’s not weirded out. Azuma seems to be having fun, but what’s she really thinking? Am I pulling this off? I’m so anxious.
After hitting various spots, our final stop is a hotel. No, not to stay the night—the date ends with dinner on the hotel’s upper floor. It’s famous for its stunning night view. Probably crazy expensive, though.
“Look! It’s gorgeous! I’ve never been somewhere like this!”
The hotel has huge windows with a panoramic view of the city. Azuma’s beaming as she looks out.
Bzzt bzzt
A faint vibration interrupts. Probably a phone on silent. Azuma pulls her smartphone from her bag and checks the notification. Her expression turns slightly tense.
“Hey, Yamanaka-kun, has Mukai-kun contacted you?”
“Mukai, our classmate? No, he hasn’t. Why?”
That guy would never reach out to me, no matter what.
“Mukai-kun’s been asking my friends for my contact info lately. One of them asked if it’s okay to share it with him.”
That jerk’s got a wife—what’s he doing?
“You should say no. You don’t want that, right?”
“Yeah… but he’s super persistent. I don’t want to burden my friends, so maybe I should just tell him directly that it’s a nuisance.”
“Got it.”
I could confront Mukai myself, but since we don’t get along, that’d probably backfire. I want to help Azuma, but there’s not much I can do about him.
“Hey, can I take a picture of the food here?”
“Uh, sure, go ahead.”
“If I show him a photo of our dinner and say I’m with someone, maybe he’ll back off.”
Will that work? Knowing him, it’ll just piss him off.
“Oh, speaking of Mukai-kun, did you know? I hear all sorts of stuff through my job, and I caught a weird rumor. His company’s supposedly funding some shady research.”
“Research?”
“Yeah—something about humanoid weapons.”
