Chapter 27: Mukai and Mukai’s Father
Mukai POV
Lately, my luck’s been absolute garbage. My wife’s always in a foul mood, and I still haven’t gotten Kyōka Azuma’s contact info since the reunion.
Failing to swap numbers there was a huge mistake. I asked the class president, but he just spouts nonsense about not giving out people’s info without permission. Inflexible idiot.
None of the other classmates seem to have her contact either, so I’m completely cut off from her.
Every time I see Kyōka on TV, I’m haunted by regret—if only I’d sealed the deal at the reunion. It’s all Yamanaka’s fault. He stole her attention. And it pisses me off how everyone keeps yapping about him.
It’s not just my personal life—work’s going south too.
The company’s starting to falter. It’s not just the recession; the management itself is screwing up. We’re a decently big company, so a little slump isn’t a big deal. But if it gets too bad, we’ll have to downsize.
I’m confident I could turn things around if I took over from Dad. But the old man’s clinging to the president’s seat like his life depends on it. By the time I inherit, who knows how bad things’ll be? I don’t even want to think about it.
Dad’s been pouring huge sums into some sketchy company. The business is struggling, and he’s throwing money at what?

One day, Dad summoned me to the president’s office. Perfect—I had some things to say to him too.
I stormed in, and that’s when I saw something weird. Behind Dad stood three women. It’s not unusual for women to be in his office—he’s always got some mistress around. But these ones were… off.
First, they were drop-dead gorgeous. Black hair, killer figures. Mistress material. And their faces were identical—triplets?
But I swear I’ve seen those faces before… somewhere. They stood perfectly still, like they weren’t even breathing or blinking.
“Sorry for dragging you here, Haru. But it’s time I introduced you to them.”
“Introduced me? To what?”
Dad didn’t turn around, just pointed a thumb at the women behind him.
“You called me here for that?”
Dad often introduces me to his connections, but dragging me here urgently for some women? Just eye candy, right?
“Heh, they’re special. They might look human, but… they’re androids.”
“Androids…?”
“Go on, introduce yourselves.”
At Dad’s command, the women bowed in unison.
“Pleased to meet you. We are the 005 series androids from Futaba Labs. We look forward to working with you.”
They raised their heads, spoke, then froze again, motionless.
Futaba Labs…? Oh, that’s the place Dad’s been dumping money into.
“Dad, are they really androids? They do seem a bit… different, but that alone doesn’t convince me.”
“You’ll see soon enough. And the real surprise is coming. These aren’t just any androids. They’ve got extraordinary abilities—mentally and physically, far beyond humans. And most importantly, they’re top-tier weapons.”
“Hmm…?”
I scrutinized the women behind Dad again, trying to confirm if they were really androids.
I know I’ve seen those faces… recently, too. Not some old memory. Then it hit me—Yamanaka’s smug face flashed in my mind. And that secretary of his who showed up at the reunion. She was a stunner, so I remember her clearly. Her hair color and style were different, but that’s easy to change. Strip away those details, and they’re identical, aren’t they? No way…
“Hey, Dad, are these all the androids there are?”
“No, there aren’t many, but there are definitely a few more out there. Why… did you see another unit somewhere? No way that’d happen.”
“So there are others!”
I knew it! It always seemed fishy that Yamanaka suddenly struck it rich with investments. That secretary of his—she’s an android too! She must’ve been helping him succeed. It all makes sense now.
If I had an android, I could do the same!
“Dad! Lend me all of them!”
“No way.”
“Come on, I’ll make this company ten times bigger!”
“I said no.”
“Just lend them to me!”
I got heated and lunged at Dad to grab him. But a strong grip stopped me. One of the androids had moved in front of him, clamping down on my hand.
“Do it.”
“Understood.”
“—Ugh!”
Next thing I knew, the world flipped. In an instant, the android had thrown me to the ground.
“Jeez, where did I go wrong raising you? These androids are my bodyguards right now. Try to touch me, and you’ll regret it.”
Damn it, say that first! My whole body aches from slamming into the floor. This sucks.
“Fine… I’ll lend you one. Just one, temporarily. Show some results with it. Got it?”
