Chapter 34: Charging Straight into the Enemy Main Force, Going Full Unrivaled, and Getting Called a War God by Our Own Side
“If things keep going this smoothly, Sword Saint Baldo might actually take down Imperial Princess Leticia for us, Zenon! Your plan is seriously the best!”
“Yeah… you’re right, but…”
Valeria wrapped her arms around my neck and stared right into my eyes.
Her lips were so close we could almost touch. My heart slammed hard in my chest for a second.
But her face looked pale—exhaustion was practically leaking out of her.
After thinking it over, I gently set her down on the ground.
“Valeria, can you wait here for me?”
“Huh…?”
Her eyes blinked wide in surprise.
“I’m gonna charge straight into their main camp right now and take out their supreme commander—Imperial Princess Leticia.”
In the original game scenario, this war was supposed to claim Valeria’s life.
If I wanted to completely rewrite that future, I had to go all-in and settle it here.
“What are you saying, young master? Are you actually serious?!”
Felix sheathed his sword and hurried over.
“Dead serious.”
We’d been fighting battle after battle—I was tired too—but this was the absolute best chance we’d get.
The Imperial army had their backs stabbed by the frontier count’s forces and were in total chaos. Even if they frantically pulled their golem soldiers back, reorganizing the army wasn’t gonna be easy.
Right now, we actually had a real shot at taking Leticia’s head.
And if we did, Valeria would be saved.
“What are you even talking about? We’re in this together, aren’t we? I’m fighting with you, Zenon.”
Valeria planted her hands on her hips and stepped right up to me.
“…No, but listen—”
I’d already pushed her way too hard.
Her body was naturally frail—I couldn’t put any more strain on her.
Besides, Imperial Princess Leticia was surrounded by an insanely powerful escort unit, nothing like Prince Lucian’s group.
If they were the same as in the game, then yeah, I was basically unkillable, but Valeria would be in serious danger.
If her safety was my top priority, the smart move was to leave her behind at Dalham Castle.
“Don’t underestimate the daughter of Asphodel—the sword of the kingdom. I’ve still got plenty of magic power left.”
She said that and gripped both my hands tight, like she was never letting go.
“And I told you already. I’m never, ever letting someone precious to me die again.”
“Valeria…”
She was calling me someone precious.
Just like I couldn’t stand the thought of losing her, she felt exactly the same way about me.
W-wait… does that mean Valeria actually loves me… as a guy…?
If that’s true, I’m way too happy right now.
I thought about it for a moment.
This really was the single biggest chance to change fate. So to make that happen…
“…Okay. Let’s go together.”
“Yes! If we combine our strength, there’s no enemy we can’t beat!”
“Yeah, you’re right.”
I made up my mind.
If anything went wrong, I’d just protect Valeria with everything I had.
The me right now could definitely pull it off.
“Exactly, young master Zenon! This Felix will accompany you as well!”
“No, Felix—you stay and defend Dalham Castle. If we lose this place, we’re back to square one.”
Since the golem legion was pulling back, Felix and the mercenaries should be able to hold the castle on their own.
We couldn’t just leave Dalham completely empty.
We’d roughly shoved about two thousand captured Imperial soldiers into the dungeon, and there were still a few hundred more who’d escaped outside and were probably wandering around nearby.
“…Guh, guhnuuu. This is so frustrating… but if it’s the young master’s order…”
“I’m counting on you!”
After saying that, I scooped Valeria up in my left arm and took off running.
My leg strength had reached a completely ridiculous level.
The scenery blurred into streaks rushing past behind us.
We caught up to the retreating golem soldiers in no time and blew right past them.
“Outta the way!!”
One clean slash as I overtook them. The steel giant split in half like a piece of paper, sparks flying everywhere as it crumpled.
I turned into a gust of wind, cutting down golem after golem.
“Black Thunder!”
Valeria unleashed lightning magic too, roasting them one after another.
“Your magic pool really is almost bottomless, huh, Valeria!”
“As long as you keep topping up my life force, Zenon, I can spam skill magic as much as I want!”
She said it with total confidence.
Her breathing was getting rough from exhaustion, but the power and accuracy of her spells hadn’t dropped even a little.
“And like I said—I’m the one protecting you.”
“…Guess I can’t fall behind either then.”
That fierce determination seemed to be holding up her small body.
Knowing she cared about me that much made my chest burn.
“We’re definitely winning this together, Valeria!”
“Yes!!”
We smashed through countless enemies and kept charging forward.
Before long, the enemy main force came into view.
All kinds of magic—lightning, flames, ice—were flying everywhere, explosions going off left and right.
Total melee chaos.
The frontier count’s soldiers were tearing into the enemy like wild animals.
Once mages get dragged into close combat, they’re terrified of friendly fire from their own spells, so they can’t use their full power anymore.
My dad really understood that. The frontier count troops didn’t care about taking hits—they just dove fearlessly into close-range fights.
“Now, everyone—full charge!!”
Valeria summoned more than two thousand undead soldiers one after another and sent them crashing straight into the Imperial lines.
I immediately hit her with a Heal.
Now the Imperial army was caught in a pincer.
That effect was huge.
Just having the escape routes blocked by undead was enough to terrify them—they started panicking and losing it.
“U-undead?!?!”
The mage units that had been about to rain attack spells on our frontier troops froze. The magic circles floating around them fizzled out.
High-level magic needs intense focus, so if you rattle the enemy mentally, you can make their spells fizzle completely.
That’s exactly why Leticia developed the golem soldiers—they don’t feel fear.
By using golems as shields and safely bombarding from the rear, the Imperial army had crushed us over and over until now.
“Listen up! Those undead are Valeria’s followers—they’re reinforcements for us, the frontier count army!”
I stood right in the middle of the battlefield and bellowed so both sides could hear me clearly.
“The youn—?!”
“It’s Lord Zenon! He didn’t just take the castle—he brought reinforcements?!”
“That’s right! I left Dalham Castle to Felix. Now we’re taking the enemy supreme commander Leticia’s head!”
“Uooooooohhh!!”
A thunderous roar of approval exploded from the frontier count soldiers at my shout.
“And that’s not all! Zenon took down the Empire’s hero—General Baldo!”
Valeria refused to lose to me and yelled it at the top of her lungs.
“Wh-what did you say…?!”
“Is that true?!”
“No way! General Baldo was definitely on an inspection tour to Dalham Castle!”
“That’s impossible—pure nonsense!”
Our side erupted in huge cheers; the enemy side overflowed with denials.
“It’s not nonsense! Then why isn’t General Baldo coming to save the Imperial army in their crisis?!”
“Y-yeah… that’s true…!”
Every soldier on both sides—who had been half-doubting—couldn’t help but nod.
Because it was unthinkable otherwise.
“The only reason General Baldo isn’t here is because Zenon defeated him in single combat! Everyone—praise Zenon! Zenon Greivan has slain Imperial Vice-General Baldo!”
Valeria shouted it proudly.
“Zenon! Zenon!”
“Our new hero… no—our war god!!”
“Long live Lord Zenon! Long live!!”
“What a man! The young master has surpassed his father!”
The frontier count army’s morale shot through the roof.
