Chapter 33: We Take Down the Giant Golem and Successfully Defend Dalham Castle
Thanks to our counterattack, the golem legion got wiped out in no time—close to a thousand of them gone just like that.
“Whoa! Wait a sec, does this mean I don’t even get a turn!?”
Felix, who’d taken up position right in front of the broken castle wall, shouted out in excitement.
We’d asked him to be the final line of defense here.
The air inside Dalham Castle had completely shifted—from pure terror to wild excitement—when it happened.
*Boom… rumble…*
A vibration like distant thunder shook the ground hard.
“Wha… what the heck is that!?”
Valeria pointed, and there it was: a super-sized golem, easily ten meters long, had appeared.
“Wait—that’s gotta be a siege golem, right!?”
In the game it wasn’t supposed to show up until way later… but they already finished it?
Looking closer, the paint job was missing and the movements looked kinda stiff and awkward. Definitely felt like a prototype siege golem.
First Imperial Princess Leticia was the empire’s top alchemist, and even during this expedition she’d been obsessed with developing new weapons. Or honestly, it was more like she started wars just so she could test out new toys.
“Battlefield inspiration opens brand-new horizons in alchemy. War is absolutely essential for technological progress, don’t you think? War forever!”
That was one of First Imperial Princess Leticia’s famous lines.
Back in my previous life, people on the web used to roast her hardcore for being such a crazy princess.
Right about now she was probably glued to her recording devices, dying to collect real combat data on this siege golem.
That colossal weapon kicked aside the wreckage of its own allies and charged straight toward Dalham Castle. The other golem soldiers followed right behind its ferocious advance.
This was bad. The makeshift barricade we’d built out of their destroyed buddies was getting smashed through.
“Schwarz Ritter’s lightning strikes aren’t working!?”
Valeria stood there stunned.
Even the Demi Liches’ thunder magic wasn’t slowing down the super-giant golem at all.
Starting from the second generation, golem soldiers had insulating armor, so electricity was no longer a weakness. Looked like this new model was already equipped with it.
“If that monster hits us, we’re getting flattened into pancakes!”
Unease spread fast among the mercenaries.
Couldn’t blame them—that thing was walking terror.
“Valeria, we’re doing it. You with me!?”
“Huh—? Of course I am!”
Valeria clung tight to my body.
Our target: maximum-output [Excessive Recovery] powered by the massive magic she was feeding me.
The super-giant golem barreled straight toward the collapsed wall.
“Come on then, you freak! His Lordship Zenon put me in charge here, so I’m holding this spot till the end!”
Felix roared, sword already raised.
Even the Sword Demon Felix probably couldn’t take that monster head-on.
It was up to us.
Still holding Valeria in my left arm, I took a running start and launched myself high toward the super-giant golem.
“Haaah!”
It swung its enormous fist upward to swat us out of the air.
A crushing wall of death closing in.
But inside my body, a ridiculous amount of magic from Valeria was swirling like a storm.
As long as she was giving me her strength, there was nothing to be afraid of.
All we had to do was slam our full power into it.
“[Excessive Recovery]!”
My glowing right fist collided head-on with the giant golem’s fist in midair.
My arm—strengthened over and over—shattered instantly into pieces, but…
*Zushaaaaaaa!*
Starting from the point where my fist made contact, the super-giant golem began collapsing at insane speed.
It was like weathering—hundreds, thousands of years of decay happening in a single moment. Steel rusted away and turned straight to sand.
The giant’s arm crumbled, the torso exploded apart, the head dissolved into a cloud of dust.
All that overwhelming mass collapsed into nothing but a huge pile of sand pouring down in front of the wall.
“H-holy… one hit!?”
“Amazing!! As expected of Young Master Zenon!!”
Felix’s joyful shout rang out.
From Dalham Castle, an explosive cheer erupted.
Valeria and I got blasted away like leaves by the giant’s arm, but we righted ourselves in the air and landed safely.
My reinforced legs absorbed the impact without a problem.
“Not done yet, Felix! Don’t let a single enemy inside the castle!”
“Yes sir, understood!”
Several golem soldiers rushed Felix, but he cut them down in seconds.
“Zenon, you okay!?”
“Totally fine!”
Right away I used Heal to regenerate my exploded right hand.
Maybe because of all the adrenaline pumping from the fight, I didn’t even feel any pain.
And the regenerated right hand… I could tell it was even stronger than before.
I glanced over at Valeria—she didn’t seem hurt either.
“Haaaaah!”
I drew my sword and charged the incoming golem soldier, slicing it clean in two with just my right hand.
It split apart way too easily.
Thanks to the physical enhancement from [Excessive Recovery], even I was starting to feel like a total monster.
“Come forth, Gawain!”
Valeria summoned her [Death Knight] Death Knights too, forming an ironclad defensive line in front of the broken wall.
“Come on then! Me and Schwarz Ritter will take you all on!”
Gawain and the others pushed back the approaching golem soldiers and cut them down one after another.
Their swords were made of the same Damascus steel as the golem soldiers’ armor—we’d borrowed them from Dalham Castle’s armory.
But the enemy still had overwhelming numbers.
Even at the highest estimate, we’d only taken down about 1,500 golem soldiers so far. That left close to 6,500 still active, plus another 60,000 enemy troops waiting in reserve.
The Demi Liches’ magic power wasn’t infinite either—they’d eventually run dry from all the back-to-back fighting.
The mercenaries holed up in the castle couldn’t stand up to golem soldiers at all.
If this kept going, sheer numbers were gonna crush us.
Our last hope was…
Right then, a war cry echoed from far in the distance.
The golem soldiers that had been about to swarm us suddenly froze.
Then, one by one, they started pulling back.
“Whoa, this is…!”
Felix’s eyes lit up.
“Commander! Sword Saint Baldo’s border count army just slammed into the enemy’s thinly defended rear!”
“Holy crap, what an assault!”
“We did it! Total comeback!!”
The mercenaries up on the walls let out huge cheers.
Father had attacked the enemy’s back line to save us.
Even with 60,000 troops, their main force was those fragile mage units. Without the golem soldiers as their frontline shield, getting hit by Sword Saint Baldo’s 15,000-strong sword corps would be a nightmare for them.
I’d originally sent a messenger to Father precisely for this moment.
First Imperial Princess Leticia must’ve pulled the golem soldiers back to protect herself.
Even if she took the castle, if she lost her own head it’d all be pointless.
“Alright—this battle’s ours!”
“Yes! Zenon, you’re seriously incredible!”
Valeria threw her arms around me and squeezed tight.
Felix was openly crying tears of deep emotion.
“Young Master Zenon truly is our pride, our very own god of war! Everyone—raise the victory cry! We held Dalham Castle!!”
“Uooooooohhh!!”
From Dalham Castle, the fortress that had repelled a massive 60,000-strong army, an earth-shaking victory roar thundered out.
