It was the night just before Obon. Kurenai woke me up as I slept beside her.

“Arisu messaged me. She said, ‘Wanna go out for a meal? The three of us?'”
“Why have we been getting so many invites like that lately?”

“Well, that’s fine. When is it?”
“The day after tomorrow. She said it’s just dinner, but I figured we could go shopping after, too.”

Since summer break started, I hadn’t seen Yumekawa even once. So I felt a little awkward about it. I wondered what she thought about me dating Kurenai—her childhood friend.

We were at the family restaurant where I worked part-time. Yumekawa sat across from us, resting her cheek on her hand. Her smile had a hint of exasperation in it.

“Ahaha~ Do you know that you’ve been sneaking glances at Yuzu this whole time, Minato?”

As I fumbled, Kurenai, who was sitting next to me, suddenly stood up.
“I’m going to the bathroom.”
She left her seat, looking somewhat displeased.
“What’s her deal?”
“Hehe. That’s the first time I’ve seen Yuzu so jealous like that.”
“Jealous?”
“Yeah. She usually doesn’t show emotion, so I’ve never seen her like that. You two are really into each other, huh?”
“I hope so.”

I cut her off and then, I asked her a question that had been bugging me.
“Why’d you suddenly suggest the three of us get dinner?”

I hadn’t missed it—not since earlier… That Yumekawa had been holding something back.
“For someone so sharp about these things, you sure can be dense.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You really didn’t notice that I liked you, Minato?”

“Ahaha~ So you really didn’t realize.”
Faced with Yumekawa’s exasperated laugh, I was at a loss for words. Was she teasing me, or…?
I was about to ask when Kurenai returned.
“You two look like you’re getting along well.”
“Yuzu, I told Minato how I felt.”

This time, Yumekawa stood up.
“See you in the second semester.”
Leaving just those words, she quietly walked out of the restaurant.

“……Why?”
“Because it proves how much you care about me.”
“Doesn’t it make me a pain in the ass?”
“I will only feel that way if it was someone I didn’t like. But I, uh… I like you.”
“Even if you like me, people can still fall out of love, you know?”
“I’m not thinking about that. I’m more worried about whether you’ll stop liking me.”
“Me too.”
“That’s why we both have to try not to let that happen, right?”
“Then… Does that mean being annoying is a minus to that?”
“No, it might be a plus.”
“What is that supposed to mean? That makes no sense.”
“Then does accepting someone who’s annoying make me a minus?”
“……Not at all.”
As she hugged me tightly, Kurenai quietly muttered just one word.
“Idiot.”
And just like that, time quietly passed, with only the two of us there.
