“Aoyama-kun, can I talk to you about something?”

It happened during a shift one day. Asou-san spoke to me with a serious expression on her face.

“What is it?”

“Um, there’s someone I’d like you to meet.”

She seemed a bit hesitant to say it. From her demeanor, I could sort of guess what was coming.

“A guy, right?”

“Y-Yeah. As expected, you’re sharp.”

“Well, it just seemed that way. So, let me guess—he’s been hitting on you, but you’re not sure if he’s a good person, and you want me to find out?”

“…Yeah, something like that. Also, I’d like to meet your girlfriend too. I was thinking maybe a double date?”

She’s really popular.

As I looked at Asou-san while she spoke, I couldn’t help but to think like that.  I was impressed, in a way.

“If he’s not a bad guy, can’t you just meet him one-on-one?”

“Hmm… I just don’t really feel like it. But at the same time, I do want to move forward.”

“…You know, hearing that kind of thing from you is making me feel complicated.”

After all, I was the one she had confessed to. I also knew about her previous heartbreaks, but more importantly, I was the one who recently turned her down. 

Who am I to be giving her advice on starting a new relationship?

As I struggled with how to respond, Asou-san laughed.

“Ahaha, sorry, sorry. But really, don’t overthink it.”

“Well, that’s easier said than done.”

“I was rejected by you, but you didn’t feel great about turning me down either, right?”

“Yeah, I guess that’s true.”

“That’s why I thought, if I can move on, maybe it’ll ease some of that guilt for you too. It’s something I’ve thought through in my own way.”

“You don’t have to force yourself to get into a relationship for my sake.”

“It’s for my own sake too. I want to find someone who genuinely likes me and be happy together.”

Hearing those words, something inside me settled. In the end, I didn’t love Asou-san as a woman. So she was probably trying, in her own way, to move on from me.

Someone who truly loves her. And that someone isn’t Minato Aoyama.

“…Got it. I want you to be happy too, Asou-san.”

“Thanks. And just so you know, I feel more respect than romantic feelings for you now.”

“I don’t think I’ve done anything to earn respect. So, who’s the guy?”

“Um, he’s from the school next door. I met him at a bowling alley that a friend invited me to. He seemed like a nice guy, but I know I’m not great at judging people.”

As she laughed a little shyly, Asou-san scratched her head.

“Well, I don’t mind just meeting him. But don’t expect any fancy advice or anything.”

“Yeah, I know. Thanks, then.”

“…So that’s what happened.”

It was night time. After returning home, I told Kurenai, who was already waiting in the room, about what Asou-san had said.

“What the heck. You’re such a pushover.”

She looked slightly annoyed at that.

“No, that’s not what I meant by it…”

“Still, I’ve been wanting to talk to Asou-senpai at least once too.”

“Why?”

“No reason. Or would you prefer I threw a fit and said I didn’t want to go?”

“Ah, no. Sorry—please come with me.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

Saying that, Kurenai headed toward the shower. And as she left the room, without turning to face me, she muttered.

“Don’t get all flirty with Asou-senpai, okay?”

Leaving those words behind, she stepped out and shut the door.

“Good work today, Aoyama-kun. Oh, is this your girlfriend? Nice to meet you, I’m Asou.”

On the day I had promised to meet with Asou-san, I went to the meeting spot in front of the station with Kurenai. As soon as we arrived, Asou-san spotted us and ran over to us.

“Asou-senpai, nice to meet you. I’m Yuzuha Kurenai.”

She spoke unusually politely.

Come to think of it, this might be the first time I’ve seen Kurenai talk to someone other than Yumekawa. So she can interact like this, huh?

“She’s beautiful! No wonder you fell for her, Aoyama-kun.”

“Asou-san, could you not talk like some auntie from the countryside?”

“So, where’s the guy you’re bringing?”

“Hmm, he should be here soon…”

She checked her phone a few times and looked around. Just as Asou-san tilted her head in confusion, her phone rang.

“Ah… Huh?”

“What’s wrong?”

“Ah, well… He says he can’t come today.”

She showed us her phone screen.

All it said was: 『If you won’t meet me alone, then forget it.』 

“Disgusting.”

Before Asou-san could say anything, Kurenai muttered sharply.

“Uh, no, you don’t have to go that far…”

“No, this is disgusting. What kind of reply is this? He only wanted a chance to hook up with you, didn’t he?”

While Asou-san looked flustered, Kurenai was getting fired up for some reason.

“Hey, Kurenai, calm down.”

“…Ugh, it’s just pissing me off. Senpai, let’s forget about him and grab dinner, the three of us.”

“U-uh, well, I mean, if he’s not coming, then I don’t really need to be here. You two should just go—”

“It’s fine. When you’re with someone you love, whether it’s two people or three, it’s still fun.”

With that, Kurenai took the lead and walked right into the nearest family restaurant without waiting for a reply.

“…Sorry about her, Asou-san. She’s not usually like this—”

“Pfft, ahaha. What is with that girl? She’s amazing.”

“Asou-san?”

“Ahh, now I really get why you fell for her, Aoyama-kun. And she even casually showed off a little while defending me. She’s a great girlfriend.”

“…Yeah. Honestly, I don’t deserve her.”

“Alright then, let’s hurry and go in too. If we take too long, I’m scared Yuzuha-chan might get jealous.”

Just like she said, when we entered the restaurant, Kurenai was standing there arms crossed, clearly annoyed. Seeing that, Asou-san laughed again. And at that moment, I thought to myself.

Maybe this is the first time I’ve ever seen her smile like that.
