- Chapter 5 - What Exactly Are You Looking At?
What Exactly Are You Looking At?
When we entered the marriage agency, the first thing that caught my eye was the interior, which resembled a church.
It was quite spacious, with doors on both sides leading to what seemed like multiple rooms. On the other side of a long counter sat several women, probably the receptionists.
There were also men and women of various races there, spanning a wide range of ages.
That alone would have just made me think, “It’s a big place,” but what surprised me most was the receptionists themselves.
Some had horns on their heads, or cat ears or beast ears. The horns came in pairs, not straight and pointed but branching into two at the tips, a characteristic of the dragon race.
It seemed each race had its own designated reception window.
Among them stood out one woman in particular. There was clearly someone with far too much exposure.
Her black leather outfit resembled a bikini, leaving both shoulders bare, and the fabric was nowhere near enough to cover her ample chest.
I couldn’t see below the counter, but it was undoubtedly something outrageous.
Was it really okay to entrust her with reception duties? At that point, I almost wanted to beg her, “Please put on some clothes!”
On her back were large wings. On her head were two thick black horns, and her long purple hair framed a striking beauty.
No matter how I looked at it, she was a succubus. And she seemed to be looking this way? She was even licking her lips. That wasn’t the look of someone eyeing prey, was it…?
As I pondered that, Airi gripped my shoulder with unusual strength.
“What exactly are you looking at? The human reception is over there, isn’t it…?”
“I get it, so let go of my hand!”
“You two are really close, huh!”
“Ahh! Meg, say more like that!”
Airi wriggled her body as she said that. What was going on with her emotions?
I pulled myself together and stood in front of the human reception counter.
The receptionist appeared to be human, a beautiful woman with lovely black medium-length hair.
“Um, I’d like to register.”
“Yes. In that case, please fill out the necessary details here.”
She handed me a sheet of paper. It seemed I needed to write my profile. I also filled in the conditions I sought in a partner.
“You’re Kaito, correct? Since this is your first time, we’ll need a little time to verify your single status and such. After that, you’ll have an interview with a staff member, so please wait a bit longer.”
“Understood.”
I had been nervous as a first-timer, but it went smoothly. Back in Japan, I had always felt the threshold was too high to take the plunge.
That said, they hadn’t asked anything about Airi and Meg. Did that mean there was no issue?
Then, after waiting thirty minutes, I was ushered into a room. But for some reason, Airi and Meg followed.
“You two plan to come along even for the interview?”
“That’s right? I’m Kaito’s guardian right now!”
“If Meg’s the guardian, then I will be too.”
“I’m already twenty-two, you know.”
Naturally, I refused their company and entered the room alone.
Inside were a chair and a desk, set up for facing the staff. It felt much like a job interview.
But the room’s decor was stylish, creating a relaxing atmosphere. Perhaps it was intentional, to ease any tension.
Seated across the desk was a single female staff member, whose appearance could have passed for Japanese.
The receptionists were like that too, but everyone here was beautiful.
Once I sat down, the staff introduced herself and greeted me, and the interview began.
“With that, we’ll discuss based on the profile sheet you filled out earlier. Regarding your desired profession for a partner, it says adventurer. What is the reason for that?”
“I’m an adventurer too, so I thought having the same job would give us common ground.”
“Indeed, shared points make conversation flow easier. And for the age you hope for in a partner, it’s around the same twenty-two, correct?”
“Yes. I figured someone close in age would be easier to talk to.”
Hoping for someone in their early twenties was something I, at thirty back in Japan, probably couldn’t have done.
The interview continued for about thirty minutes after that, and in the end, she introduced one woman to me—on paper, at least—saying, “How about this person?”
When I left the room, Airi and Meg were waiting, so I called out to them.
“Sorry to keep you waiting; thanks. So, what should we do now?”
“Oh, I have an interview coming up too. I had it reserved originally. So we’ll part ways here. Let’s both do our best!”
“I see. In that case, I’ll wait until you’re done.”
“Ehh!? I think it’ll take a while, you know?”
“This feels like fate too. Besides, I want to talk more properly with you, Meg.”
“Really? If you say that much, maybe I will let you wait.”
Then, thirty minutes later, Meg headed into the interview room.
“Kaito, wouldn’t it have been fine to part ways here?”
“No, I want to properly thank her at least, and besides, I have a bit of business.”
After that, Airi and I waited for Meg together. Eventually, when she emerged from the room, she came straight over to us.
“You really waited!”
“I mentioned earlier that I had something to talk about, and that something is from the interview.”
“I see. They probably introduced someone matching your hopes. What kind of person was it?”
“Actually, the person the staff introduced to me was you, Meg.”
“Me? Huh?”
“She said you match my conditions perfectly.”
“I see… Um, actually? I have something to tell you too, Kaito. I just finished my interview, and the staff introduced a guy to me. She said there’s a perfect match. And that person was you.”
“Me…?”
To my astonishment, the staff had introduced each of us to the other.
