I Was Not Popular With Girls in My Previous Life, but I Was Reincarnated Into a World Where Harems Are the Norm, and a Mentally Unstable Elf Beauty Follows Me Around - Chapter 4
Please Let Me Join You Too
“How many people do you plan to marry?”
“Huh?”
She was saying something odd. It seemed like something she could figure out without asking.
“How many people do you plan to marry?”
“One is the limit, right?”
“Why? It’s fine to have two or more.”
“Huh? It’s okay!?”
Something was off; our conversation wasn’t meshing. Or rather, the content of the conversation itself was strange.
At that point, a certain possibility crossed my mind. It was something unimaginable in Japan. But this was another world. If the world was different, the values would be too.
There was no choice but to ask Meg about it. As casually as possible, so she wouldn’t get suspicious.
“I seem a bit unclear on that point. How many people can you marry?”
“There’s no set rule. Anyone would want to be with the person they like, right?”
“Um, so for example, would it be okay if I married five people?”
“Yeah, that’s right. But in that case, you have to cherish everyone properly. And everyone has to agree with each other and the other partners. That’s obvious, though.”
Polygamy, of all things. But sadly, it seemed unlikely for me. If one person fell in love with me and I liked her too, that would be more than enough.
“So that means you could do the same, Meg?”
“Yeah, it doesn’t matter if you’re a man or woman. Though in my case, I can’t even find one, let alone five…! Heh…! Why is that, really…?”
(Oh no! I messed up; the darkness…!)
“Ah, well, from my perspective, I think you’re attractive, Meg.”
“Really!? Which parts!?”
“Too close!”
Meg leaned in even closer to me. She smelled nice, so I wished she would back off. That was a lie; actually, I was just flustered because I wasn’t used to it.
“We just met, but first off, I thought you looked cute. And you’re bright. I’m quiet, so people like that seem especially appealing. It’s like they have something I don’t. Also, you tried to comfort me after hearing about my failed confession, so I thought you were kind.”
“I’m so happy! No one’s ever said anything like that to me before!”
“Really?”
“Yeah. Because all the guys I’ve met before just say stuff like, ‘You’re not what I expected’ or ‘You should lean into your dark side more.’ They assume things without me even explaining my personality. They build up expectations on their own and get disappointed on their own, but I couldn’t care less. If they got to know me for real and thought that after trying, I could accept it.”
“Ah, I get that. I always think, don’t judge based on your own assumptions. In my case, on top of that, I wish they’d at least try to learn a little about me first.”
“Right!? We really click, don’t we?”
“It might be easy to talk to you too, Meg.”
“Really!? Then call me Meg. I feel more relaxed that way. And I’m calling you Kaito too.”
“Is it okay to go straight to first names like that?”
“It’s normal at this point, isn’t it?”
Was it? I only started calling Airi by name because she kept asking whenever she had the chance, and that was recent.
But if she said she preferred it, then maybe I should.
While we talked like that, we exited the forest. What worried me was that Airi had been quiet since earlier.
When we reached the town, we first reported to the guild and received our completion reward. Then we headed to the marriage agency with Meg leading the way.
The town was large. In the month since my reincarnation, I had focused on adventuring activities, so I hadn’t grasped the whole place.
The building was quite big, with an orange roof and many windows, making it clear at a glance that it wasn’t a residence. But it might be easier to say it was the kind of building you often see in otherworldly stories.
“Here we are. This is the marriage agency where I’m registered.”
I had thought about it a little back in Japan, but I never imagined I’d visit one in another world first.
“Thanks for the guide. I’ll go in with Meg, but what about you, Airi? I figure you’re not interested, so should we meet up at the inn?”
“Is it even okay to bring someone of the opposite sex in there to begin with?”
“It might be a bit weird, sure, but just because you’re together doesn’t mean you’re lovers. There could be a relationship like opposite-sex marriage-hunting buddies.”
“I see. So what if there are two people of the opposite sex? They might not let us in after all. Please let me join you too.”
“In that flow, wouldn’t most people hold back?”
And so I entered the marriage agency with two women, a situation where we could have been turned away at the door without surprise.
