- Chapter 67-68: Third Date (Part 8&9)
“Who should do the driving?”
“Well… Is it okay if I try driving?”
They arrived at the go-kart boarding area, and Jin and Yoriko were discussing who would drive. Since the two-person go-kart required sitting close together with shoulders touching, Jin would have been satisfied just being able to sit close to Yoriko, so he intended to accept whichever seat Yoriko chose, whether driver’s or passenger’s.
“Then, Tsukimizato-san will drive.”
“Yes, actually I have a driver’s license and I’m confident in driving.”
“Eh? A driver’s license?”
“Ah! M-moped license.”
(That was close. I actually forgot that you can’t get a car driver’s license until you turn 18.)
Yoriko possessed a car driver’s license, but remembering that people Jin and Otowa’s age couldn’t obtain one, she hastily said it was a moped license that could be driven as an additional qualification. Incidentally, since the Tsukimizato family didn’t have the financial leeway to maintain a car, Yoriko’s driver’s license had become a paper license with a gold stripe indicating an excellent driver.
“Wow, Tsukimizato-san has a moped license. It’s not prohibited at school, so maybe I should try getting one too.”
“Y-yes. Even if you don’t ride one in daily life, I think it could be a good opportunity to study traffic rules, so it might be good to try.”
At Jin’s school, obtaining a moped license wasn’t prohibited, so there were students who rode mopeds for commuting and daily transportation. However, from the perspective of convincing parents and the costs of purchasing and maintaining a moped, those actually riding them were a minority.
“I think two-wheelers and four-wheelers are different, but since you have a driver’s license, I can feel reassured. I’ll leave the driving to you, Tsukimizato-san.”
“Yes, leave it to me.”
Jin believed Yoriko’s words about having a driver’s license and decided to entrust the driving to her.
“Do you need an explanation of the controls?”
“I’m fine.”
“Understood. Then I’ll start you off after confirming you’ve fastened your seatbelts.”
When Yoriko sat in the driver’s seat and Jin in the passenger seat, the staff uncle asked Yoriko if she needed an explanation of the controls. Yoriko confidently answered that no explanation was needed, and they fastened their seatbelts.
“I’ve confirmed the belts are fastened. Well then, off you go.”
After the staff uncle confirmed their seatbelt usage, he released the hand brake that had been applied to the go-kart.
“Now, here we go!”
Squeal squeal squeal squeal
Yoriko suddenly started at full throttle, and white smoke rose from the friction between the tires and road surface.
“Uwaaaaaaah!”
A sudden force pressed him against his seat, and the go-kart picked up speed.
“Ahahahaha. So fun!”
“Ugyaaaaaaah!”
While Yoriko gripped the steering wheel looking like she was having fun, Jin desperately grabbed the front bar, enduring the shaking attacking him from every direction.
“Now, I’m going to attack the next corner with an out-in-out!”
“Uwaaaaaaah!”
The go-kart that Yoriko was driving was approaching a curve that turned sharply to the right. Yoriko moved to the left edge without reducing speed, applied the brakes slightly just before the curve, then entered the curve from the outside, passed through the inside edge, and exited to the outside.
“Kaneda-kun, I’m going to pass the car ahead. Come on, don’t drive so slowly!”
“Hyeeeee!”
Driving in such a manner, Yoriko’s go-kart caught up to the car ahead. She then took a position where she could overtake at any time.
“I’m going from the inside!”
“Wait, the car is facing a weird direction!”
When they approached the next curve, Yoriko operated the steering wheel, and after the go-kart entered from the inside, the vehicle body was facing a different direction from where it was traveling, sliding sideways as it went.
“Th-that’s amazing. That girl just pulled off a drift with a go-kart.”
When Yoriko overtook the car ahead, the boyfriend of the couple driving the leading car said with a surprised expression.
“Eh? We’re at the goal already?”
In such fashion, Yoriko overtook several go-karts and returned to the goal point.
“Woah, I’ve been working here for many years, but this is the first time I’ve seen such incredible driving.”
“R-really?”
When Yoriko stopped the go-kart, the staff uncle came running over. After applying the hand brake to immobilize it, he spoke to her with a surprised expression. Hearing this, Yoriko looked a bit embarrassed.
“See, my driving was good, wasn’t it?”
“Y-yes, it was.”
(I never want to ride in a car that Tsukimizato-san is driving ever again.)
At this moment, Jin vowed he would absolutely never ride in a car with Yoriko behind the wheel.
“I learned that driving technique when I was working part-time at a tofu shop before.”
“I-I see.”
(Why would a driving technique be related to a tofu shop?)
Jin couldn’t understand the connection with her part-time job and couldn’t comprehend Yoriko’s story.
“Tsukimizato-san, shall we have lunch soon?”
“Yes. It might be about time.”
After getting off the go-kart, Jin suggested they have lunch soon. Since Yoriko was also appropriately hungry, she accepted Jin’s proposal.
“For lunch here, there’s the restaurant, the food court, and the scattered shops that serve light meals. Where would you like to go, Tsukimizato-san?”
“Well, it might be good to go somewhere we can sit leisurely, also for the purpose of resting.”
“Then it would be the restaurant.”
Since this amusement park was crowded with many people on holidays, the food court was used as a resting place for families, making it difficult to secure seats, and the scattered shops only had benches installed nearby where you could sit and eat. Under such circumstances, only the restaurant satisfied Yoriko’s conditions.
“Then, let’s head to the restaurant.”
“Yes. Let’s go.”
Jin and Yoriko held hands so they wouldn’t get separated and headed toward the building that housed the restaurant.
