- Chapter 69-70: Third Date (Part 10&11)
“We’ve finished lunch too, so where shall we go next?”
“Well… How about that attraction over there?”
Having finished lunch at the restaurant, Jin and Yoriko were discussing where to go next. Then Yoriko pointed at an old Japanese-style building and suggested the next attraction.
“A haunted house, huh. That sounds good.”
“That’s right. It’s an attraction you can’t skip when it comes to dates, right?”
What Yoriko had suggested was a haunted house. It was a standard attraction at amusement parks, where once you entered the building, various frightening effects would appear one after another, something that everyone knew without needing explanation. It was a classic for dates, and for Jin it was a perfect chance to show his manliness to Yoriko and raise her favorable impression of him. Under such circumstances, Jin accepted Yoriko’s proposal and decided to enter the haunted house.
“Hyaaa, it looks so scary!”
“Hahaha, you’ll be fine because I’m here!”
A couple consisting of a blonde gal and a flashy guy who were lined up in front of Jin and Yoriko went into the darkness. The gal was acting scared in an exaggerated way, while the guy was trying to look cool, and the two were flirting while linking arms as if showing off to those around them.
“I wouldn’t want to be like that.”
“Won’t you do that for me, Tsukimizato-san?”
Yoriko, who had been watching the couple, didn’t seem to have a very good impression of them and was looking at them as if she were looking at a cockroach. On the other hand, Jin found himself a little envious of that couple.
“Hyaaa, it looks so scary… H-how was that?”
“Very cute.”
Hearing Jin’s words, Yoriko switched her mood and, just like the gal from before, linked her arm with his and asked Jin for his impression. This was shocking for Jin, and he couldn’t help but feel like he wanted to protect her.
“Sorry to keep you waiting. Please go ahead.”
This haunted house was the type where you moved on foot, and people entered within a certain time interval after the couple who went in before them. The woman in charge of the entrance was watching the time, waiting for the prescribed time to pass. And when the time came, she guided Jin and Yoriko to enter inside.
“It’s pitch black inside.”
“That’s right. Hold on tight to me so we don’t get separated.”
“I will.”
It was pitch black inside. There was a faint light illuminating the ground, probably for guidance, and Jin thought they should probably walk toward it. Making sure not to get separated from Yoriko, they pressed their bodies firmly together, confirming each other’s presence while proceeding in what seemed to be the direction of the route.
Pshew
“Uwah!”
“Kyah!”
The familiar air blast from haunted houses attacked Jin and Yoriko, and both let out surprised voices.
“It’s just air.”
“Y-yes, that’s right.”
Both had been a bit startled and cried out, but to cover it up, Jin made a scientific analysis, and Yoriko nodded as if to go along with it.
“Something’s being lit up over there.”
“It looks like an old well.”
When Jin and Yoriko proceeded forward, an old well was illuminated by a spotlight.
(Something will probably come out from inside the well.)
Looking at it, Jin thought it was probably a mechanism where something would come out from inside the well.
“…Nothing’s coming out.”
“Maybe it’s broken?”
Yoriko was thinking the same thing and was looking curiously at how nothing was coming out from inside.
“I’m heeere!”
“Kyah!”
“Uwah!”
Jin and Yoriko were thinking something would come out from inside the well and were focusing their attention downward, but it was actually a mechanism that took advantage of that, and suddenly a ghost mannequin dressed in tattered clothing swung down from above. Jin and Yoriko were surprised by it appearing from an unexpected place.
“Ah, sorry.”
“N-no, I’m the one who should apologize.”
Jin and Yoriko had ended up embracing each other in surprise. As the mechanism’s mannequin moved upward with the sound of a motor running to return it to its original position, the two realized they were holding each other.
“…Shall we move forward?”
“Y-yes, let’s.”
Jin and Yoriko pulled themselves together, separated, and decided to hold hands again.
“Was Kaneda-kun’s hand always this hard?”
“Eh?”
Jin tried to hold Yoriko’s hand, but there was no sensation and his palm was wandering through empty air. But Yoriko seemed to be gripping something, and she felt like the texture was strange.
“I’m not holding Tsukimizato-san’s hand though?”
“Eh? Then whose hand is this?”
“It’s meeee!”
“Gyaah!”
When Jin told her he wasn’t holding her hand, Yoriko tried to confirm the identity of what she was currently gripping. Then suddenly red lighting was cast, and there stood a blood-covered old woman. They had thought the haunted house contained only fake things, but actually staff members playing frightening roles were also positioned there, taking actions to stir up fear in customers at appropriate places.
“Huh? She’s already gone.”
“Where did she go?”
Jin and Yoriko screamed and embraced each other again. And when they noticed, the old woman’s figure had long disappeared.
“That was a bit surprising.”
“Y-yes, it was.”
Jin and Yoriko pulled themselves together and proceeded along the route. Beyond that were temples and graveyards, and further ahead were caves and other places, with various mechanisms that surprised Jin and Yoriko.
“It’s longer than I thought.”
“That’s right. It feels like there should be an exit soon.”
The two had been walking through the haunted house for a reasonable amount of time, so they thought there should be an exit soon. But since it was dark inside the building, they couldn’t see ahead and didn’t know where the exit was.
“Uwaaaah! I can’t take it anymore!”
“W-wait! Don’t leave me behind!”
While they were walking in such a state, they heard a man’s scream from ahead, followed by a woman’s anguished cry.
“It might be the couple who was walking ahead of us. I wonder what happened?”
“That’s right. I’m a bit concerned, but there are staff members playing frightening roles in here, so I think they’ll handle it if something happens.”
Jin guessed that the male and female voices belonged to the couple who had gone ahead. Yoriko was thinking the same way, but since there were multiple staff members playing frightening roles in this facility, she thought they would respond if there was an unexpected situation.
