Episode 6: Finding My Way in This World
“So, you didn’t show up at the entrance ceremony because of an injury?”
“Did you get into a fight on the first morning of school?”
“Man, you really haven’t changed since middle school.”
“Scary. I better avoid making eye contact. If he sets his sights on me, my school life is over.”
The moment I walked into the classroom, everyone averted their eyes.
Seriously? Was Nishikōji this hated? What am I supposed to do now?
I slumped into my seat, burying my head in my hands. Seeing that, my classmates subtly moved farther away from me. It stung a little.
Still, I guess it makes sense, considering all the terrible things Nishikōji did.
“Yo, Nishikōji.”
I turned toward the voice, almost moved to tears.
“Oh, hey. Morning, Narita.”
Standing behind me was a boy with an utterly generic, forgettable face. In the story, he’s Nishikōji’s lackey, a throwaway character who serves as comic relief. If I recall, he’s decent at fighting, too.
“Morning. So, what’s up with your injury?”
“Ah, just some stuff happened.”
“Huh. Fighting on the morning of the entrance ceremony? That’s so you, Nishikōji.”
“Haha… yeah, I guess.”
I forced a laugh. I wonder what the real Nishikōji would’ve said in this situation. Probably something like, “Man, the guy was such a loser,” and then laughed about it.
“So, who’d you fight this time? A college kid? You always went after older guys in middle school. Oh, remember that one time? The guy you made apologize by stomping on his head for, like, an hour just to get his money?”
Wait, what? That’s news to me.
These guys are practically delinquents. This is next-level scum.
“Did I do something like that? Can’t really remember,” I said, forcing another laugh.
I needed to change the subject, fast. Narita might not have been fleshed out in the original story, but he was supposed to fall into darkness eventually. I had to get him out of this mess while I could.
“Hey, did you know a new café just opened near the school? Want to check it out after class?”
“Huh? Uh, sure…”
Narita gave me a confused look but nodded. Phew. Looks like he’s still too intimidated by Nishikōji to say no. At least he won’t cause trouble for now.
“Man, classes today are such a drag.”
“Yeah, tell me about it.”
I’m a second-time student, so it feels even more tedious.
“Should we… skip?” Narita asked hesitantly.
“No, we’re not skipping. Tuition’s not cheap, you know.”
“H-Huh?”
Narita looked at me, baffled. Guess I’m acting too different from the usual Nishikōji.
Still, I can’t just go back to being my old self. That’s a death sentence. Sorry for throwing you off, Narita.
In the end, we sat through every class, from first period to sixth. Maybe Nishikōji was smart, or maybe it’s just because this is my second time in high school, but the material was super easy.
And hey, good for me, sticking through a full day of lessons like this.
“Hey, Nishikōji, you doing anything tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow? Oh, right, there’s a placement test coming up soon. I should probably study for that.”
“Study? You always get good grades without even trying.”
“Uh, yeah, but, y’know…”
Did I really?
From Nishikōji’s memories, though, he actually studied in secret. Guess he kept that part of himself hidden.
I sipped my smoothie, digging through my memories. Yeah, he used to study quietly at home.
“Sometimes you just feel like studying, right? Let’s go with that.”
“Uh… okay.”
Narita looked a little bewildered, but he nodded. He really is too obedient—it’s almost scary.
Back in middle school, Narita admired Nishikōji and latched onto him. Since then, he’s been following his lead. There’s a mix of admiration and fear there, I think. Nishikōji might have been a villain in the story, but he was admired by some, too.
“Man, I’m broke these days. Maybe I should find a new first-year to target. Someone who looks loaded.”
“Uh, or, like… cut back on how much you’re spending?”
“What?! But what about that mixer we talked about? It’s with college girls! No way I’m cutting back.”
“Then maybe skip the mixer?”
“What?! You know I haven’t been seeing anyone lately. That’s not like me. Seriously, what’s going on with you?”
Ugh. That hit a nerve.
But I already have my response ready.
“Look, I’ve been thinking I should get serious now that I’m in high school. Don’t want to cause trouble for my parents, and there’s college entrance exams, too.”
“Huh… I see…”
Narita still looked unconvinced, but it couldn’t be helped. This was the only way to save him.
“Alright, then. Guess we’ll call off the mixer.”
“Yeah, let’s do that. Sorry for deciding on my own.”
“Nah, it’s fine.”
Narita replied while looking down, clearly unsettled. Poor guy. I’m basically turning his world upside down.
Maybe I need to rethink how I’m going to live in this world.
