Episode 5: Did This Really End Peacefully…?
“You…!!”
The guy glared at me, his face twisted in fury.
Well, of course, he’s mad. Because of me, his stalking was exposed, and Ayame managed to escape. But too bad—the one at fault here is him.
“It’s his fault! I didn’t do anything wrong! And yet… because of you, she ran away! You made her misunderstand everything!”
He ranted on and on.
Nishikōji is scum, but this guy isn’t far behind. Stalking and violence?
It’s a tight race, but if I had to choose, Nishikōji might just win the “worst of the worst” title.
The guy continued shouting and then suddenly swung his fist, landing a punch square on my cheek.
I couldn’t react in time and hit the ground with a loud thud. Damn, that hurt!
“It’s all your fault!”
His bloodshot eyes locked on me, his rage completely unhinged. To be honest, it was terrifying.
But somehow, it wasn’t as scary as Nishikōji. Maybe that encounter numbed me to this kind of thing.
Still, punching a high schooler isn’t going to get him anywhere. He must be the kind of guy who loses all rationality when he’s angry.
But here’s the thing: he hit me first. And he’s still trying to hit me. Which means if I retaliate, it’ll count as self-defense, right?
According to Nishikōji, he’s apparently well-versed in street fights and pretty strong, too.
All I need now is the courage to fight back…
As another punch came down, I caught his fist.
He’s bigger than me, though, so I’m outmatched in strength. In that case…
Using his momentum, I pulled on his arm while grabbing his head. Then, I drove my knee into him. Nishikōji had said this move causes a mild concussion. How does he even know this stuff?
As I executed the move, the guy crumpled to the ground easily. He was completely out cold.
“Was this… the right thing to do?”
It really doesn’t feel like it. Did I go too far? Probably.
Looks like Nishikōji’s memories are influencing me a bit too much. This is the worst.
“What should I do… Should I wait for the police?”
At least the recording on my phone would serve as evidence.
But what if Ayame comes back before they arrive? She’s polite and kind—she’d definitely try to thank me.
If that happens, we might end up more involved with each other.
Ugh, what am I supposed to do? I can’t just let this guy get away either…
“Guess I’ll stick around until the last possible minute…”
In the end, the guy was arrested, thanks to evidence like security camera footage.
After Ayame and the others returned, the guy was handed over to the police. Following some questioning, Ayame and I were released.
Of course, Ayame tried to thank me, but I politely declined. If there weren’t a death flag looming over me, I’d have happily accepted.
For reference, this was the excuse I came up with on the spot:
“No need for thanks. Just let me end this looking cool, okay?”
Argh. Looking back now, I’m cringing so hard. Someone, please hand me enough bandages to cover my entire body!
Lying on my bed, I writhed in embarrassment.
Why did I even say something like that? Oh, right. That’s what the protagonist said in the game when he saved Ayame from Nishikōji.
I didn’t think much of it while playing, but now I realize—he was that guy. The type you can only tolerate because the story carries him.
Still, I managed to save my first love. So, I guess today wasn’t all bad?
The real issue is tomorrow. Apparently, I’m in the same class as one of the heroines, Sasaki Kanna. Somehow, I’ll have to spend the next year avoiding her at all costs—
Meanwhile, back in her room, Ayame murmured to herself.
“Who was that boy today…?”
When Ayame returned to the scene earlier, the guy was sprawled on the ground. She knew the boy had done something to stop him, but…
“He was so strong. That man was much bigger than him.”
She had wanted to thank him, but he had refused. Judging by how smoothly he declined, he might be used to dealing with girls.
“He was… quite handsome,” she whispered, blushing. “No, that’s not it. I just want to thank him properly if I ever get the chance…”
She let out a sigh.
If she could thank him, what would happen next? The thought crossed her mind before she shook her head, hugging her pillow and writhing in her own embarrassment.
The game’s world was beginning to distort.
