Chapter 44: Smartphone and Anxiety

“What’s that?”

“Ohohoho~ You see~ This is a communication magic tool.”

“”A communication magic tool?””

Jeff-sama proudly showed off a square panel that looked like a modern smartphone. 

“This is an amazing tool that can allow you to talk with someone even when they’re a distance away.”

Jeff-sama placed my onigiri on the table and started dancing around with the communication magic tool in his hand. 

Of course, Mia-sama wouldn’t let Jeff-sama be. 

She swiftly unleashed a hand-chop attack to Jeff-sama’s head with her small hand. 

“BUF-!

“Jeff-sama, it’s discourteous to dance during a meal.”

Mia-sama said before returning to her seat and took a bite of my onigiri. 

Then, Rina gasped, as if she had just remembered something. 

“Communication magical tool… Is it similar to a telephone magic tool?”

Rina took her telephone magical tool out of her uniform pocket and showed it to Elena-sama. 

Elena-sama, who had been eating her lunch elegantly, looked at it and nodded. 

“Yes. That’s right. There are too many pests lurking around you so I gave it to you so you could talk to me anytime. But… Come to think of it, we haven’t used it much lately, huh?”

“Fufu~ It’s because I visit Elena-sama’s house almost every day!~”

“It doesn’t have to be ‘almost’ every day though. You can come literally every day. Rina, both you and… Kanato, are always welcome into our house.”

While Rina and Elena-sama were chatting together with a heartwarming mood around them, Jeff-sama, who had received a direct handchop from Mia-sama, stood up and chuckled. 

“Fufufu…. It won’t do if you lumped that telephone tool with this communication magic tool. With this one, not only can you call the other person but you can also record voices and scenery. You can also watch the scenes you’ve recorded. With this, you can communicate with other people without having to speak.”

“Huh? That’s basically a smartphone, right?”

“”Smartphone??””

Everyone tilted their heads to the side adorably in response to my passing comment. 

Of course, smartphones didn’t exist in this world so I decided to avoid explaining what ‘smartphone’ was in great detail.

“We-Well! You know! It’s smarter than the telephone magic tool…! So… You know, smartphone for short!”

“”Oooh…””

The three girls had an impassive expression on their faces, as if they were watching someone slip and fall grandiosely.

“That sounds really nice! Smartphone!”

However, it seemed Jeff-sama really liked the name. He then handed me the communication magic tool.

“I will give this smartphone to you!”

“Huh? Me?”

“Not just to you~ Everyone here will have their own smartphone too~”

“N-No, I mean, this is expensive, right?”

“Yeah. It is.”

“Forgive me for asking but… How much does it cost…?”

“Fufu… It’s better if you don’t know.”

Jeff-sama said as he put his index finger to his lips in a ‘shush’ motion and smiled mischievously like a little devil.

“Ah….”

In the end, we received a smartphone from Jeff-sama. He said he would teach us how to use it after school since this tool wasn’t that easy to use. So for now, we returned our focus to our lunch. 

I tried to reach out for the onigiri I had brought but I couldn’t find any left. There, I noticed Mia-sama had an extremely satisfied look on her face as she finished eating the last remaining onigiri I had. 

“………..”

Mia-sama gasped a little to herself, seemingly finally noticing my predicament. She then handed me her delicious, top-quality bento box. 

I will need to teach Mia-sama how to make onigiri one day….

Ever since we enjoyed the Japanese comfort food I had made to celebrate my victory over Geese, Mia-sama had been fascinated by my cooking. It seemed the taste of Japanese comfort food had left a tremendous impression on her heart. 

And so, the members of Five Star continued eating our lunch surrounded by warm and comfortable feelings. 

The room that served as our base was located in a weathered building located in a quiet corner of the Central Magic School. Amidst the glamorous western-style buildings, this place stood out like a sore thumb because of how dilapidated the building was. 

Originally served only as a warehouse, the school gave one of the rooms in the corner of this building to serve as our base. No matter how much we cleaned the room, dust particles still appeared here and there. The floor was still creaking too. And yet, the gentle sunlight streaming from the window that illuminated not only this room but also the five of us felt so incredibly comfortable. 

The most important thing for us is not fancy facilities or buildings. But this. The moment we spend together with the people we like. 

My cheeks relaxed into a smile when I noticed Elena-sama had been looking at me. 

“Hm? What’s wrong, Kanato?”

“Nothing. It’s just that… Despite the incident with Genesis, the day just feels so… Peaceful.”

Upon hearing this, Elena-sama and Rina smiled. 

“But remember, Onii-sama! In order to preserve this peace, we need to fight!”

“That’s right. This peace is the result of Kanato’s hard work.”

“N-No… I… I haven’t really done anything though.”

Feeling a bit embarrassed, I scratched the back of my head while muttering awkwardly. 

But then, Jeff-sama suddenly approached me and slung his arm around my shoulder. 

“Jeff-sama?”

“While we’re still able to enjoy the peace, keep in mind there are plenty of folks who wish to get rid of this peace.”

“…….”

I couldn’t say anything back.

“Which is why… The time has come for us to defeat those guys. We need to give those pompous nobles a taste of their own medicine.””

‘Us’?

Now that I think about it…. Even though Jeff-sama’s family is really wealthy, he’s still ignored by the other nobles. Jeff-sama is the eldest son of a count. He’s the one who will inherit all of that wealth and yet, the high society still openly ridicules him.

Elena-sama, Jeff-sama, Mia-sama, Rhea-sama and even Selene-sama have been treating me kindly, but I know both Jeff-sama and I are disliked by the other nobles. Rather than a simple commoner versus noble, it’s more like a struggle against those who refuse to acknowledge capable individuals, regardless of their status. Even now, I can see many students and teachers showing their dislike to me openly. I’m sure they find my mere existence to be a sore thumb in their eyes. 

Even after I defeated Geese in a fair match, nobody acknowledged me. In fact, they pretend as if the match never happened in the first place. It feels a bit unsettling to be honest. 

I wonder if they’re ignoring and antagonizing me because they’re afraid the privileges they have now are going to be taken away by me? Maybe the nobles are able to unite together because they all feel the need to protect the privileges they’ve been hogging all these time?

I pondered to myself as I watched Mia-sama wiping Rina’s mouth. Then, Mia-sama’s mouth opened in surprise. 

“That’s right. Our practical exams are coming soon, right?”

“Ah! That’s right! Everyone! How’s everyone’s preparation for the exam?”

Rina asked and Elena-sama replied with a composed expression on her face. 

“Just the usual for me. How about everyone else?”

Elena-sama turned her sharp eyes to us and Jeff-sama and Mia-sama immediately looked away awkwardly. 

Jeff-sama is good at defense magic and Mia-sama is good at support magic. None of which are considered as useful in this school. 

“My-My apologies for asking.”

Feeling guilty, Elena-sama apologized. As for Rina, she still looked anxious about the exam. Her eyes scattered everywhere as she murmured. 

“I’m still not used to the practical tests. Not only are important figures from this kingdom going to be there but we’ll have people from other kingdoms coming in too. Oh, right! Onii-sama, this will be your first practical test, right?”

“Oh? Ye-Yeah. That’s right.”

“Onii-sama! I’m sure you will receive the highest score!”

“Well… What’s the practical test like though?”

“It’s more or less the same as the entrance exam but instead of fighting knights affiliated with the school, we’ll be fighting against monsters summoned by magic!”

“I see…”

“Since we’re going to have a lot of people coming in to watch the exam, the whole school is going to be buzzing with people.”

I see. Central Magic School is a prestigious training institution in this world after all. The fame of this school reach not only this kingdom but also the other kingdoms. High-class nobles are going to be there so of course they’re not only here just for the sake of checking the student’s abilities. They’re going to talk about politics, business and maybe engagement plan for their children as well. I don’t really care about the nobles who dislike me but somehow…

I can’t shake the feeling that something is going to happen. This premonition of something bigger is making me feel anxious.
