Chapter 43: Breaking off an Engagement and Wrongful Acts

Because of the incident with Persephone, we were unable to continue with the training camp as per our plan. We left the villa the next day since we didn’t have a clear grasp of how strong Genesis was. It was clear for everyone to see that any rash actions would only lead to more trouble. 

One thing for certain, based on Persephone’s behavior, the base of Genesis should be near Leiden. But still, poking a hornet’s nest would only do us more harm than good.

However, on our way back, we became worried about the townspeople. We asked around if there were any unusual incidents or abductions and fortunately, they assured us there hadn’t been any weird incidents. 

And also, Luna-sama followed us back without any complaints. I had never seen her being this cooperative. 

We immediately went to the Fibel family’s residence and informed Keltz-sama of the situation. 

Then, Keltz-sama sent me alone to the palace to inform the princesses.

“So that’s what happened…”

“Yes.”

In a luxurious reception room, Rhea-sama sighed with a serious expression on her face after listening to my report. 

Then, Selene-sama, who was sitting next to Rhea-sama, opened her mouth anxiously. 

“We have to inform Father immediately. Before the situation worsens…. Still, to think Elena-san lost so easily…”

Selene-sama said as she glanced briefly at Rhea-sama. She looked utterly dejected. 

Rhea-sama nodded and then, she put on a serious expression on her face as she addressed me. 

“Based on the investigation we’ve conducted about the murder of a noble working under Percy Company, the result suggests a high possibility of undead magic being used in the murder.”

“Just as I thought…”

Recalling the magic Persephone had used, a dark expression crossed my face. In other words, it was safe to assume the people that killed the noble from Percy Company was one of those commoners and slaves that turned to undead magic. 

“Thank you for sharing this valuable information with us. Feel free to come to the palace if you find anything else.”

“…Yes. If the possibility arose.”

Rhea-sama expressed her gratitude to me but honestly, I couldn’t feel happy about it. 

There are too many royals and upper-class nobles here. It feels suffocating. 

I slightly bowed to them and left the luxurious reception room. As I walked the expensive-looking carpet, someone gently tapped my back.

“Selene-sama…”

“I’ll see you outside.”

“No-No. It’s alright. I can manage on my own.”

“There’s no need to act reserved.”

“…..”

No, there is a need. After all, you have a fiancé.

Feeling exasperated, I kept on walking with Selene-sama beside me. Her arms kept brushing against mine. 

Is she doing it on purpose? The servants are staring at us intensely. 

I could only hope no strange rumors would circulate out of this.

“Umm… Selene-sama, can you step back a bit? I think you’re getting a bit too close.”

“Hm~ But if I move away, who will protect me then?”

“Selene-sama, I believe I don’t have any obligation to protect you though.”

“Huh? But you said you would help us, didn’t you?”

Selene-sama looked at me with her mouth slightly open. There was a hint of disappointment in her face. Then, she pressed her arm against mine even more, definitely on purpose. 

I sighed, feeling even more exasperated. 

“Helping you guys out and protecting you are two completely different things. Besides, Selene-sama, you’re engaged to Harry-sama, right? Instead of having a commoner like me to protect you, isn’t it better if you go to that handsome and rich gentleman instead?”

I commented nonchalantly and Selene-sama puffed up her cheeks before she slightly slapped my rear end. 

“Wha-?! Selene-sama?!”

“Don’t tease me, Kanato-san.”

Seeing her shaking her shoulder-length pink hair while glaring at me, I couldn’t help but to find her childish outburst to be adorable. 

I chuckled, amused at her reaction.

“Why are you laughing at me?! I’m a princess, you know! Even the nobles never laugh at me…”

Selene-sama pouted her lips, sulking. I opened my mouth to speak.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Humph… What is it?”

“Why did you get engaged with that bas-… I mean, Harry-sama?”

“Did you about to call him a ‘bastard’?”

“Oh, no. I wouldn’t dare.”

“……….”

“If you don’t want to tell me, it’s alright.”

“….Well, you see…”

At first, she looked hesitant but then, seemingly having made up her mind, she looked up with a new sense of resolution. 

“The engagement was decided by my father.”

“I see.”

In Japan, people were free to marry whoever they liked. Of course, as a commoner, I also had the same right to choose my partner. Although I wouldn’t be able to marry into nobility, but at least I had more freedom to choose than Selene-sama. Unless there was some sort of serious reason, breaking off an engagement wasn’t something people would normally do here. Especially an engagement between royalty. At this rate, Selene-sama would end up marrying that bastard Harry. 

From a purely physical standpoint, the two of them matched each other. Selene-sama was beautiful and Harry was handsome. But, considering Harry’s personality, it was clear to see that Selene-sama deserved someone better. 

However, as a commoner, my opinion isn’t worth anything here. 

I thought to myself while observing Selene-sama. I noticed her sigh seemed heavier and her expression looked a bit troubled. 

It’s truly a waste for someone like Selene-sama to end up with Harry.

Their dull eyes lacked any sort of color. They looked like they were in a trance and strong scent of pheromones wafted from them.

“Hahahaha!!! Harry-sama! Look at this! This girl is usually so cheeky and frankly annoying but now, she’s all mine!~ Hahahahaha! Even though she’s only a baron’s daughter, she’s acting all high and mighty!~ I’ll be sure to thoroughly savor her. Take my time to pamper her with my love~ Ohohoho!!”

“You’re that happy over this?”

“Of course! I’ve never seen an aphrodisiac as effective as this! Where on earth did you get it?”

“Well, you see~ I have a good supplier. I still have plenty left too.”

Hearing Harry’s response, the corner of Bern’s lips curled up into a sinister smile. 

“Rina-chan, just you wait~ Soon, I will thoroughly train you just like this girl~”

Upon hearing Bern’s words, Harry also muttered softly under his breath. 

“Elena…”

He traced the scar on his neck, the one caused by Elena, while smiling faintly.
