Chapter 45: The Start of the Incident

At the practical exam site for the lowest class

Several days passed and the day for the practical exam was here. 

The practical test would be taking place outdoors since students would need to fight against monsters summoned with magic. The student’s skill would be measured through the fight. 

If the students managed to defeat the monsters here, we would proceed to the arena to face stronger monsters. If the students win against the monster at the arena, the students would receive an S rating.

In this school, the student’s worth was determined by both theoretical and practical skills. As for me, I had received an S rating for my practical skill but F for my theoretical skill. Hence why I was placed in the lowest class. 

Even if I get an S rating here, I won’t be able to advance to a higher level class unless I can score well in the theoretical exam. But still, I won’t be cutting corners here. 

“Shaaaaaaa!!”

A cheetah-like monster was summoned to fight me. 

“SMG…”

I chanted under my breath and a submachine gun appeared into my hand. I infused the bullet with magic and the gun glowed in faint blue light.

I took aim and immediately pulled the trigger. Several shots were fired from the barrel, hitting the cheetah monster head on. 

The monster let out a groan before it disappeared. 

“Splendid…”

The teacher looked surprised and gave me the passing grade. 

By the way, my match also concluded the practical exam for the lowest class since my attendance number was at the very last. 

I was also the only one who managed to defeat the monster in this class. 

In short, I received an A rating. 

The next test would be held in the afternoon. I had to mentally prepare myself first. After all, the arena would be filled with other nobles and high-ranking people. To be honest, knowing so many people would be watching me left me feeling a bit nervous. 

I sighed and there, I saw Jeff-sama and Mia-sama running to me. 

“As expected from our friend~ Well done!~”

“Ye-Yes! Thank you.”

“Kanato-san, I knew it. You’re really strong.”

I high-fived Jeff-sama and Mia-sama. The nobles around us glanced at us for a brief moment before they quickly averted their eyes from us. 

Strange enough, except for a few individuals, I didn’t see anyone showing blatant hostility toward us in this class. Of course, the people from the upper classes still looked at me with disdain but as for the people in the lowest class… While they had shown some degree of hostility toward me at the beginning of the school year, their discrimination against me wasn’t as severe as Harry or Bern. 

After I glanced at my classmates, I returned my attention to Jeff-sama and Mia-sama. The three of us talked about trivial stuff while waiting for the next round.

The impact of the afternoon practical exam was truly amazing. The performances of excellent students that were carefully selected from each class left the spectating nobles impressed. 

Especially Rina, Elena-sama and Luna-sama. The three of them were especially impressive. Not only did they have great skills, but they were also beautiful. 

Elena-sama and Luna-sama’s popularity reached the other kingdoms as well. Many nobles from other kingdoms showed their enthusiasm to establish a closer connection with Duke Fibel and Duke Lennox after witnessing their performances. 

As for Rina, the nobles from other kingdoms who watched her battle raised their fist in a gut pose, admiring her talent. 

How can a commoner be this strong?

Some of the nobles from other kingdoms expressed their opinion that Rina should’ve been granted a title. But everytime they did so, the nobles from Halkeginia would chipped in. 

“Why should we give a nobility title to a commoner?”

The mood would turn sour every time this happened. 

“Kanato from the second year of the lowest class, please come to the arena.”

Finally, it was time for my turn. 

Upon hearing my name being called, I stood up from the spectator seat of the lowest class and made my way to the arena. 

I didn’t have a last name since I was just a commoner. Hence why, the nobles in the spectator seats started murmuring between themselves upon watching me taking the stage. 

“That’s the guy, right?”

“Yeah. Even though he’s a commoner, but he’s incredibly strong.”

“I heard he was the one that defeated the Red Dragon.”

“Red Dragon?! You need to be at least Level 5 to defeat it, right?!”

“A person strong enough to be Level 5… And yet he’s a commoner? How ironic.”

The voices of nobles hailing from other kingdoms could be heard.

Well, even without looking, I knew those voices must’ve belonged to the nobles from Halkeginia. I had gotten used to it, so much so that I didn’t feel anything anymore. It was a bit scary though, feeling this dissonance with something. 

Seeing it was my turn to take the stage, the nobles of Halkeginia stood up from their seats, snorting angrily as they walked to the exit.

I guess they don’t want to see me fight.

On the other hand, the nobles from other kingdoms were staring at me curiously. 

I made my way to the center of the arena. Although I would be fighting against summoned monsters as well, but I wouldn’t be fighting against powerful monsters like the ones they summoned for Rina and Elena-sama. After all, I was someone from the lowest class. They would summon a suitable monster for my class. 

The referee called out to me.

“Are you ready?”

“Yes.”

I took a deep breath and looked around.

Most of the seats where students from the upper class should be sitting were empty. In fact, almost all of the Halkeginia nobles had left the seat. 

In the lowest class’s seat, Jeff-sama, Mia-sama and Selene-sama were waving their hands, cheering for me. Many other lowest class students were sitting beside them, watching me. 

I breathed a sigh of relief and shifted my gaze to the other side. 

However, in the top class of the second year, I only saw Luna-sama.

“Rina… Elena-sama…?”

The two of them weren’t there.

Even though they were sitting there just a moment ago.

I pondered what could’ve happened when suddenly, the smartphone Jeff-sama had given to me sent me a voice signal.

『Bern, you’re being too vulgar. 』

『Uhehehehe! But Harry-sama, you are also looking forward to enjoying her too, right?』

『Oooh~ So that neck wound was caused by Elena-sama. Well, since we already made her drink plenty of that love potion, she won’t be able to resist you.』
