Chapter 41: Kanato Learns the True Identity of the Girl

“Watch out!”

I screamed as I ran toward the girl. 

Fortunately, there wasn’t much distance between us. I was able to successfully catch the girl as she fell. 

“Are you alright?”

Her body was so soft and delicate. Her temperature was dangerously low though. It seemed she had been outside for far too long. Her tattered clothes couldn’t provide enough warmth against the cold night air after all. 

“….Are you a commoner? Or are you a noble?”

The girl asked while looking straight at me. 

“I’m a commoner but never mind that. Are you alright? Would you like to have something warm to cover you with?”

“No, I’m fine. Thank you for the offer. You’re really kind.”

She said as she smiled at me.

“….”

I couldn’t say anything back. There was something different about her. She didn’t look like an ordinary person, she looked almost unreal. 

“What’s your name?”

“Kanato. What about you?”

“Me… I’m Persephone.”

“Persephone… That’s quite an unusual name, huh?”

“Yeah…”

“Are you a commoner too?”

“No. I’m a slave.”

“I see….”

A slave, huh? This kingdom is not kind to slave girls. Especially someone as beautiful as her. The nobles definitely won’t just leave her alone. Maybe Persephone ran away because she couldn’t withstand the abuse from the noble? Given how tattered her clothes are, that must be the case. 

With a slightly sad expression on my face, I looked at Persephone, who was still nestled in my arms. 

Then, the girls looked at me with wide eyes. Even though our surroundings were so dark, her round red eyes were reflecting the moonlight, shining brightly amidst the darkness. 

“Kanato.”

“Hm?”

“Thank you for helping me.”

“It’s nothing. I’m just glad you’re not hurt.”

“Looking at Kanato’s face… I can feel my anger dissipating.””

“Anger?”

“Say, why don’t you come to my place?”

“And where exactly is your place, Persephone?”

“Yeah. I’m sure you will feel like it there. Everyone is working their hardest and in turn, I also do my best to support them.”

The flow of our conversation was a bit too weird for me to understand so I just laughed awkwardly. 

Then, I heard a rustling sound from behind. 

Persephone’s eyes widened in surprise. She quickly jumped away from me and turned her gaze to the direction of the noise. Following her lead, I also tensed up. 

Soon, a familiar beautiful lady emerged from between the tall grass. With a sword at her hip, I could easily recognize this beautiful blonde lady even though I didn’t have anything but the moonlight as a source of lighting. 

“Elena-sama!”

“Kanato… Just why are you walking deep into the mountains like this… I’ve been searching for you!”

“Huh? You were looking for me?”

“N-No! I mean, my father didn’t tell me to look for you so I could create a good mood between the two of us or anything like that… It’s not. It’s not like that at all…”

Her voice gradually quietened down until all I could hear was inaudible muttering. 

I tilted my head to the side, confused. Then, Persephone asked me. 

“Kanto, who is he?”

“Oh, she’s someone I know.”

“She’s a noble, right?”

“Ye-Yeah. That’s right.”

“….”

Persephone’s expression suddenly changed. She walked over to Elena-sama in steady, firm steps. 

“A noble…”

“Hm? Who are you?”

“Either be killed by me or be dominated by me.”

“-!!”

Persephone raised her hand and released a dark bream from her hands toward Elena-sama. 

Fortunately, Elena-sama managed to dodge it, albeit narrowly. Elena-sama quickly drew her sword out and aimed it at Persephone’s neck. 

I also quickly summoned an SMG and aimed it at Persephone. 

“Who are you?!”

Elena-sama shouted to which Persephone answered calmly.

“I’m a slave.”

“A slave..?”

“A slave who will control the noble and royalty of Halkeginia, the one who will bring utopia to this world.”

After she finished talking, Persephone glared at Elena-sama. 

I looked at the ground hit by her beam. The ground was melting. 

“……”

I shuddered out of fear.

“You insolent fool!

Elena-sama grimaced. She immediately imbued her sword with an enormous amount of magic power. 

“No! Elena-sama…! Stop! Run away!!”

Despite my warning, Elena-sama remained agitated. She rushed toward Persephone. Her movement was so quick, the title of ‘War Princess’ really befit her. 

No… I won’t make it in time…. I need to shoot. 

I pulled the trigger and fired at Persephone. The bullet grazed Persephone’s knee but she was quick to recover. 

This girl… Is she even human?

“Foolish noble… You will regret your own foolishness.”

Persephone glared at Elena-sama before muttering something under her breath. 

“Dead Zone.”

Almost immediately, a small translucent spherical zone formed around Persephone and Elena-sama. 

“-?! What is this?!”

“Noble, have a taste of fear.”

“A-Ahhhh!! Arghhh!!”

Suddenly, Elena-sama clutched her head and collapsed on the ground. She then started flailing, seemingly in great pain. 

“Elena-sama!”

That spherical zone must be some sort of mind attack skill. Its power was strong enough to overwhelm a Level 5 like Elena-sama. 

I already knew it when Persephone attacked Elena-sama with her beam attack.

Persephone is not an ordinary slave. 

If I attacked Persephone now without thinking thoroughly, Elena-sama might be in greater danger than she was now. I couldn’t afford to risk it.

“Wha-What… I don’t want this… I don’t want to see this…. Let me out… Let me go from here….”

Elena-sama murmured, sounding extremely distressed. 

I looked at Persephone. 

“Why are you doing this?!”

“What are you talking about….”

“Kanato, come to my side. You’re strong. I’m sure you can do so much more.”

I haven’t fought her yet so how come she’s so confident that I’m strong?

If Persephone refused to hear my case, I wouldn’t have any other choice but to take her out with all of my power.

I shouted loudly and Persephone widened her eyes in return. 

Eventually, she dispelled her zone and released Elena-sama.

“What is it?”

“That naive mind of yours will eventually turn pitch black.”

“I will let this foolish noble today since you helped me but… There won’t be a next time.”

“…Persephone… Who are you exactly?”

“Who am I… That’s an extremely difficult question.”

“I might be human…Or I might not be.”

“Huh?”

“Right. This is our first meeting after all. Very well. I will explain it in a way that’s easy for you to understand.”

After she said so, a pair of large black wings sprouted behind Persephone’s back. She flew into the sky, staring down at me. 

Then, she extended her hand toward the sky. A black cloud formed, accompanied by lightning and thunder. The cloud changed shape until it took on the form of an eye. The eye-shaped cloud was turned down on me, seemingly glaring at me like the cloud was alive. 

I froze under the overwhelming display of power. 

Persephone then opened her mouth to speak. 

“I am Persephone, the founder of Genesis. As the Queen of Undead, I shall reconstruct the system created by the foolish noble and create a new ‘genesis’.”
