Chapter 33: Selene and Kanato

The Next Day.

“Well, I think everyone here already knows but… This person here is Princess Selene, the second daughter of His Majesty.”

“Pleased to meet you all. My name is Selene de Halkeginia. I look forward to studying with all of you from now on~♫”

Everyone had their mouths open in shock. 

Albeit only for today, but these guys must be feeling the same way as the nobles who were still wary of me. After all, the daughter of the king, the very king that ruled this country, had come to the lowest class. 

When Selene-sama showed her face at the student council room yesterday, she didn’t say much. She just blushed while looking at me and Luna-sama then… She suddenly had a meaningful smile on her face. She looked alternately between me and Luna-sama, as if she had come to some sort of understanding. 

Just what is she planning to do? Her big sister was nearly assassinated so why is she here…?

Various thoughts came to my mind when the homeroom teacher pointed to an empty seat. 

“Umm… Selene-sama, can you please sit in an empty seat over there….”

“Fufu~”

However, Selene-sama didn’t pay the teacher any mind. She confidently strutted to the seat next to me and addressed the boy sitting there. 

“Umm.. I’m sorry but can you please move a bit? I want to sit next to Kanato-san.”

“Ahahaha! Of course! I will move right away!”

The boy sitting next to me laughed nervously before he quickly grabbed his bag and textbooks and he fled to the empty seat. 

Well, according to the school rules, switching seats is allowed as long as both parties agree to it. But… I’ve never seen it done like this before.

Selene-sama, donned in the school uniform, sat on the seat next to me and deliberately spoke loud enough so everyone could hear her.

“Kanato-san, can you please give me a tour around the school during lunch break?”

“Huh? Me…?”

“Yes. I want you to do it… It has to be you…”

Oi, oi, oi, what are you acting bashful and shy for?

Selene-sama’s sudden request left me perplexed and then…

“Kanato-kun, the Second Princess personally asked you to guide her. You better guide her around to every corner of the academy!”

The homeroom teacher said to me in a condescending tone. 

No, but, I’m still new to this school. I don’t know my way around either.

I subconsciously looked at Jeff-sama and Mia-sama, begging for their help desperately but both of them only nodded at me, seemingly satisfied at the sudden turn of events. 

“….”

To be honest, I don’t want to get too close to Selene-sama. After all, she’s Harry’s fiancée.

I sighed.

Seemingly interpreting my resignation as positive affirmation, the bewitching expression on Selene-sama’s face intensified. 

The nobles watching us looked restless, like they couldn’t calm down, except for Jeff-sama and Mia-sama.

Lunch Break

“Hey, look! The commoner is walking together with the princess!”

“Maybe that commoner is going to tattle on us? Because we’ve been looking down on him?

“Damn it… Why a commoner like him…”

“Enough already. You have to accept it. That commoner is not that bad.”

“That’s right. It’s not too late. He might forgive you if you apologize now.”

“Stuupid~ We’re nobles. I’d rather die than apologizing to a commoner.”

“You know, that kind of pride is worth nothing at this point.”

After morning classes, Selene-sama and I were walking through the school’s lawn together. While ignoring the murmurs from the surrounding crowd, I noticed two familiar pairs of eyes staring dagger at my back.

I turned around and there, I saw Rina and Elena-sama hiding behind a pillar. The two of them were glaring at me. Their expression looked downright frightening. Beside them, Jeff-sama and Mia-sama had an apologetic look on their faces as they stared at me. 

I gave them a bitter smile before turning my back around again. 

“So? Care to explain?”

“Explain what?”

“Why are you in the lowest class?”

“FUfu~ Well, it’s because I’m not good at fighting. Hence why I’m in the lowest class.”

Selene-sama crossed her arms behind her back as she gave me a sidelong glance. A mysterious scent wafted in the air from her pink hair, enticing my nerves. 

“Then… Why did you enroll into this school?”

“Why do you think that is?”

“Please don’t answer my question with another question.”

“Kanato-san~ You’re the type that can’t take a joke, huh?~”

She said as she gently tapped my shoulder.

The people around us widened their eyes upon seeing Selene-sama’s gestures. After all, it was rare for the royal family to touch a commoner.

I added more distance between myself and Selene-sama before replying. 

“Yeah. I’m a commoner after all.”

“Ufufu~ I take back what I said earlier. Kanato-san, you’re good at cracking a joke~”

“No, I’m not good or anything…”

“This must be how you stole Luna-chan’s heart, huh?”

“Huh? What are you talking about?”

“Nothing~”

“….”

Selene-sama teased me. But then, her expression gradually darkened. She leaned close to me to whisper into my ear.

“About the recent terrorist attack by that man named Alan… There’s a high possibility that they have people working with them from the royal palace.”

After Selene-sama finished whispering to me, I quickly distanced myself from her again before opening my mouth to answer her. 

Rina and Elena-sama are going to get angry at me…

“…I see. I suspect as much.”

“From the way you’re talking… You must’ve known something, right?”

“N-No. The reason is simple. No one is crazy enough to be that bold. Not even Alan. It’s practically impossible to pass through all of the strict security without any inside information.”

“…..A few days ago, we found the body of a nobleman who worked in the sugarcane field for Percy company. The body was severely damaged. It’s highly likely the perpetrator was someone with strong resentment against him.”

“I see….”

“Something strange is brewing in this kingdom. That’s why, rather than waiting for Kanato-san to come to the royal palace, I decided to enroll here instead.”

I knew it. Something did happen. 

Selene-sama lowered her gaze, seemingly anxious. 

Well, I did say that I will help them, more or less. She’s Harry’s fiancée but she’s willing to share a lot of information that a commoner like me shouldn’t know about.

“Anyway, for now… It’s better if I start searching for the wolf in sheep’s clothing hiding inside our ranks.”

“Indeed. I wonder just who it could be….”

Selene-sama looked worried. 

But then…

“Oi, you commoner. Just why are you walking with my fiancée?”

“A commoner like you should be more aware of your status!”

Harry and Bern appeared in front of us.
