The Little Sister Wants To Go Out With Her Brother.
The First Day of Summer Vacation
It’s just past 1 PM.
After eating the fried rice my mom made in the living room, I was simply relaxing, doing nothing in particular.
I sat on the couch in front of the TV, leaning back as if to throw myself into the backrest.
My dad’s at work today, as usual.
My mom, after finishing lunch, left the house without taking any bags, so she’s probably chatting with the usual neighbors in front of someone’s house.
Mayuki, who is a student preparing for exams, went to a summer cram school, but she mentioned she’d be back soon since her class was only in the morning today.
In other words, right now, I’m the only one at home in the Ueno household.
“Ah…”
Since it’s vacation, there are no classes, and being in the non-sports club means no extracurricular activities either.
In short, I don’t have to do anything.
“…This is bliss.”
To think that these kinds of days will continue for over a month is the best.
I don’t have to go out in the hot weather, and I can stay inside in the air-conditioned house and relax.
Maybe a summer vacation like this isn’t so bad after all.
“No, wait…”
Is that really okay…?
I suddenly recall last year’s summer vacation.
Last year, I was a loner with no real friends, so I truly had nothing to do. I just wasted time playing games or reading books at home.
But this year is different.
This year, I have my girlfriend, Hatsune-san.
“This summer, I’m going to break free from my empty days and live like a proper ‘real-charged’ guy…!”
I worked hard to achieve my best-ever score on the final exams, all to spend a fun summer vacation with Hatsune-san.
It would be a waste to let the days I worked hard for slip away.
“Still, wait… I don’t think I had any plans to meet today.”
I think Hatsune-san mentioned she was going somewhere with some girls from class today.
If that’s the case, it might be difficult for me to suddenly say I want to meet up.
I could still contact her, but sending a message while she’s out having fun might be a bit annoying.
(Well, with Hatsune-san, she might actually be happy if I contact her…)
Ever since we started dating, Hatsune-san has been calling me almost every night for video chats.
So even if I reach out, she shouldn’t find it bothersome.
“Even so… I guess it’s better to hold off for now.”
I Can Talk to Hatsune-san Later
I can always call Hatsune-san again at night.
But if I do that, I’ll be back to square one.
There’s nothing to do.
At times like this, a typical high school student would probably have some friends to invite out for fun.
Unfortunately, I don’t have anyone like that.
“Huh? Hatsune-san has completely blended into her class, but am I still the same loner as before…?”
I’m forced to confront an unpleasant truth.
While Hatsune-san is enjoying her youth, doing things a normal high schooler would, I don’t have a single friend I could call in my class.
But wait, I did exchange contact information with Shiina, one of the more popular guys in class, and I’ve gone out with him, Hatsune-san, and the class president before.
It wouldn’t be too far-fetched to call him a friend, would it…?
After thinking this over, I feel a sense of relief.
A large sigh escapes me, mixed with a feeling of resignation.
(Just thinking about this shows how little progress I’ve made in anything other than my relationship…)
There’s no point in dwelling on negative thoughts.
For now, I should stop hiding away inside the house and go outside.
I can still make this summer vacation meaningful, even if I’m alone.
“That’s it. I’ll start preparing for the trip I’m going to take with Hatsune-san. I don’t even have a travel bag or clothes to wear…”
Just as I made up my mind and stood up, I sensed someone approaching the living room from the direction of the entrance.
“I’m home—wait, is it just you, big brother? Where’s mom?”
It’s Mayuki.
It seems like she just got back from summer classes.
She’s carrying a tote bag, probably filled with textbooks.
“She left a while ago. She’s probably chatting with the neighbors.”
“Huh? Then what about my lunch?”
Mayuki enters the living room, dropping her tote bag near the couch.
“There’s fried rice on the table.”
“So she did prepare something for me…”
Mayuki passes by the table and heads toward the kitchen.
She grabs a bottle of tea from the fridge, pours it into a cup, and starts drinking it enthusiastically.
“So? Are you just going to slack off at home because it’s summer vacation?”
“No, I’m heading out now.”
As soon as I said that, Mayuki’s expression shifted to a sulky, pouty face.
“Are you going somewhere with Hatsune-san?”
“No, I’m going alone.”
“Oh, I see.”
After hearing my answer, for some reason, Mayuki’s expression brightened up.
But then, she tilted her head.
“Hmm? But where are you going alone, and what are you going to do?”
“I haven’t decided where yet, but I’m thinking of going to buy a bag and some clothes.”
“You, buying clothes…?”
Mayuki’s response was filled with skepticism.
“What? Is it weird for me to buy clothes by myself?”
“Yeah. Can you pick out clothes that won’t disappoint Hatsune-san?”
“…”
Honestly, I wasn’t sure of myself.
But as an older brother, I didn’t want to admit it in front of my sister, so I couldn’t say that.
“You’re wearing that face that says it’s true.”
Mayuki had seen right through me.
“Sorry I’m such a lame brother. But I can’t always have Hatsune-san pick my clothes, so I’ll have to do it myself.”
“Fair enough… Oh, wait!”
Mayuki suddenly perked up, as if she’d just come up with an idea.
“What’s with the sudden change?”
“Let’s go shopping together! I’ll help you pick out clothes from a girl’s perspective.”
With a smile on her face, Mayuki walked out of the kitchen and came over to the couch where I was sitting.
“That’s nice of you, but isn’t your study time important? Shouldn’t you focus on that?”
“Ugh… I studied a lot this morning, so I’m sure it’ll be fine if I take a little break.”
Mayuki’s expression tensed up slightly.
“Are you sure…?”
“W-Well, anyway! You don’t have to worry about the details. Just let me pamper you for once, okay?”
“Well, if you put it like that…”
I knew she had been studying really hard throughout the first semester, so it was probably okay for her to take a little break.
(Still… It’s surprising. Until spring, she wouldn’t even look me in the eye, and now she wants to go out with me?)
We used to get along just fine when we were younger. Maybe the rebellious phase she went through recently is finally over.
In any case, it’s been a while since I went out with my sister.
