The Stepsister Wants To Pretend That She Is Dating Her Older Brother.
“She’s taking her time.”
I sat on the couch in the living room, waiting for Mayuki to get ready.
After quickly eating the fried rice my mother had prepared earlier, Mayuki had gone upstairs to her room, saying, “I’m going to change.”
I also changed into some nicer clothes from my usual tracksuit, but nearly ten minutes had passed since then.
I was starting to get tired of waiting when Mayuki finally came downstairs.
“Sorry to keep you waiting.”
Mayuki was wearing a beige shirt and a denim mini skirt, looking different from the outfit she had on when she came back from her cram school.
“You’re looking a bit more stylish than usual.”
“Wh-Whaat!? That’s not true!”
Mayuki denied my comment in a slightly flustered tone.

My sister Mayuki and I arrived at a large, multi-purpose commercial complex in the city center.
It wasn’t the usual shopping mall near our high school.
This place is closer to home and much larger in scale.
Even though it was a weekday, the start of summer vacation had made it reasonably crowded.
There were quite a few young people around our age here.
As we walked through the facility, Mayuki spoke up.
“So, what kind of clothes do you want?”
“What kind of clothes, you say… but the truth is, I don’t have much money in my wallet to choose from.”
I gave a somewhat pathetic reply to Mayuki’s question.
My main income comes from my monthly allowance and New Year’s money, and with the upcoming travel costs, I’m sure I’ll have to dip into my savings.
As a high school student, I definitely don’t have the luxury to buy clothes without worrying.
“I see. Well, why not just go to Uniqlo then?”
“Uniqlo, huh… it kind of has a cheap image.”
“Well, students like us don’t actually have money, so cheap clothes are the way to go. Plus, Uniqlo’s quality isn’t as bad as its reputation suggests.”
I nodded in agreement, understanding her point, and decided to head toward Uniqlo.
Even though there were countless fashion stores in the facility, I wondered if it was strange that we were heading to the most casual store.
But honestly, expensive stores were out of my reach as a high school student.
Besides, considering that Mayuki would probably make me buy something for her later, it made sense to at least keep my own shopping modest.
…Looks like this summer, I’m definitely going to be broke.
I might need to get a part-time job during the break.

We arrived at the Uniqlo inside the complex.
In the men’s clothing section, Mayuki and I were browsing through various items.
“Recently, you’ve… grown taller and your body shape has gotten better, so I think most clothes will suit you.”
Mayuki was thoughtfully looking at the clothes on the shelves, resting her chin on her hand.
“Is that so?”
“Yeah. Also, to keep things budget-friendly, I think simple T-shirts would work well for you.”
She pointed to some T-shirts on the shelf as she said this.
“I see. Actually, I think Hatsune-san also told me that simple clothes suit me.”
“…Is that so?”
Mayuki furrowed her brow a little and glanced at me, looking like she wanted to say something.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. Anyway, let’s pick out some clothes. As for the color… Hmm, I think this one looks nice.”
She quickly looked away from me and picked up a white and black striped shirt, handing it to me.
“So, you like this kind of style?”
“I-I didn’t mean it like that! I just think this would look good on you!”
For some reason, Mayuki raised her voice, almost as if trying to defend herself, as she pushed the shirt toward me.
“I see. Thanks for thinking about it.”
I took the shirt from her, expressing my gratitude.
“Hmm, you’ve been speaking more clearly lately. Did being with Hatsune-san give you more confidence?”
“Maybe.”
“…”
After hearing my response, Mayuki seemed frustrated, her face showing some unease.
I couldn’t quite figure out why. Did I say something weird?

After selecting a few more T-shirts in different patterns and colors, we made our way to the fitting room area.
I entered one of the fitting rooms and started trying on the T-shirts one by one, asking Mayuki for her opinion after each try. When I changed into the third shirt, I suddenly heard a voice from behind the fitting room curtain.
“Huh, Ueno? What are you doing here…?”
It was the voice of a boy, whose voice still sounded like it had recently changed.
Since I recognized the name, I figured this must be one of Mayuki’s classmates.
“Uhhh.”
Mayuki’s reaction was anything but pleased. I peeked through the gap in the curtain to see what was going on. A boy who looked like he belonged to a sports club was talking to Mayuki.
“Hey, Ueno… about that confession the other day, could you reconsider?”
“No, I already turned you down.”
Ah, so this guy had confessed to Mayuki and was rejected.
“Yeah, you said you liked someone else, but who is it?”
“I don’t have to tell you that.”
Mayuki remained cold, replying in a blunt, emotionless tone.
“But I can’t accept that unless you tell me who it is!”
The boy took a step closer to Mayuki, closing the distance between them.
“I—I don’t know! Even if I were to tell you, I can’t right now…!”
Mayuki looked around, glancing toward my fitting room as if seeking help. Our eyes met through the curtain gap.
She gave me a glare, clearly upset that I had been spying on them.
It was clear now—I’d been caught. And judging by the tension in the air, this boy might escalate things further, so I decided it was time to step out.
“Hey, she’s clearly uncomfortable. How about you back off?”
“Huh…? Who are you?”
The boy flinched when he saw me. Thanks to spending years in another world, I was noticeably taller and bigger than the average high school sophomore. The difference in size between me and this middle schooler was significant.
“I’m Mayuki’s…”
I was about to introduce myself as her brother when Mayuki suddenly spoke up.
“Th-This is the person I like… or rather, my boyfriend!”
She grabbed my hand and said something that completely caught me off guard.
“W-Wait, what…?”
“Just go with it!”
As I was still trying to process the situation, Mayuki lightly stepped on my foot, making me snap back to reality.
It didn’t hurt, but the message was clear—she was telling me to play along.
“So, that’s the situation. I’m sorry, but you’ll have to give up.”
I said that with an apologetic tone, and Mayuki’s classmate, visibly deflated, turned around and walked away.
I felt a bit bad for him, but at the same time, there was nothing more to be done. Mayuki clearly wasn’t interested, and it wouldn’t have been right to let him keep pressing her. If he had continued to harass her, I couldn’t have stayed silent. It was better to nip it in the bud.
Just as I was feeling a bit relieved that the situation had diffused, I felt the presence of someone else approaching the fitting room entrance.
“U-Ueno-kun… Are you… two timing?!”
Standing there was a familiar face, but not in her usual school uniform. It was Ichigaya-san, the class representative, wearing casual clothes.
“T-Trouble, Ichigaya-san! Ueno-kun’s showing off a girl he’s claiming is his girlfriend—someone I don’t even know!”
She was flustered, and the words coming out of her mouth were all mixed up, probably making the situation sound worse than it actually was. She turned around, and there were two girls behind her—none other than Hatsune and her friends.
“Huh? Yakumo-kun and Mayuki-chan?”
Hatsune blinked in surprise, looking between me and Mayuki.
