The School’s Top Beauty Shows Her Homely Side.
Homeroom was over.
At last, summer vacation had begun.
I was getting ready to leave and was thinking about talking to Hatsune-san when—
“Ichigaya-san, would you like to go to karaoke after this?”
Hatsune-san was being approached by a tall girl.
She was Shiodome-san, a regular member of the basketball team despite being in the general studies class. She was one of the classmates Hatsune-san had become close with during the sports festival.
Near her stood the class representative and a few other girls.
“Hmm… it sounds fun, but I think I’ll pass today. I have plans to eat lunch with Yakumo-kun.”
“Ah, well, I guess that can’t be helped.”
Shiodome-san looked a bit disappointed but understood.
The class representative, standing nearby, alternated her gaze between Hatsune-san and me, watching the scene unfold.
“Are you two going somewhere to eat?”
“No, we’re going to cook together at my house.”
Hatsune-san puffed out her chest proudly, and as soon as the girls heard this, their eyes turned toward me.
They were probably thinking, Cooking together, huh? They must be really close.
“Looks like you two really get along… I could change my plans and spend time with Shiina-kun, too.”
“Eh? No, no, that’s not happening, Representative.”
Shiodome-san protested to the class representative, who had been contemplating her options.
“…Well, I guess we should prioritize prior commitments.”
“Exactly. But it must be nice to have boyfriends. I wonder if there’s someone good out there for me.”
Just as Shiodome-san casually murmured this, Hatsune-san stepped in, positioning herself to block Shiodome-san’s gaze toward me.
“Y-You can’t have Yakumo-kun, though…?”
“Haha, don’t worry. I won’t steal Ichigaya-san’s boyfriend.”
Shiodome-san flashed a cheerful smile.
Hatsune-san then sat back in her original position.
“Well… if that’s the case, then fine.”
“Still… Ichigaya-san, before we talked, I thought you’d be more of a tsundere, but you actually have a really cute personality.”
“Really…? Is that a compliment?”
“Well, if I had to say, yeah. Anyway, Ichigaya-san, you should have fun with your boyfriend!”
With that, Hatsune-san’s friends moved on to talk to another girl.
“Are you sure you’re okay with not going to karaoke?”
“Today, my plans with Yakumo-kun come first! I can go hang out with everyone at another time.”
Hatsune-san replied with a firm tone.
Even so… in just this one semester, Hatsune-san had completely integrated into the class.
It seemed like she was starting to live the youthful life she had always dreamed of.
Thinking about it made me happy, almost as if it were happening to me.
After leaving the school, Hatsune-san and I headed to a nearby supermarket.
According to Hatsune-san, we were lacking some ingredients to make the omelette rice.
We passed through the automatic doors and entered the lively store, where a familiar tune was playing. I grabbed a shopping basket and asked Hatsune-san.
“Alright, what are we shopping for today?”
“Hmm, eggs, onions, and I think we’ll need some chicken too.”
With a familiar air about her, Hatsune-san headed toward the vegetable section. I just followed her as she added ingredients to the basket one after the other.
At some point, Hatsune-san suddenly stopped.
“Ah, the vegetable oil is on sale. I think we’re about to run out, so I’ll stock up… wait, it’s one per person!”
She muttered to herself in front of the shelf with the vegetable oil, then sighed.
“Since I’m here with you, I can buy two, right?”
“Oh, right. I’ve been shopping alone until now, so I didn’t think of that.”
Hatsune-san snapped her fingers, picked up two bottles of oil, and added them to the basket I was holding.
“It’s nice having you around, Yakumo-kun.”
“If you’d like, I can be your shopping buddy from now on. I’ll even help carry the bags.”
I offered to help, seeing how cheerful Hatsune-san seemed.
“Is that okay?”
“Of course. Leave it to me.”
“Hehe, Yakumo-kun, you’re the family’s ally.”
I wasn’t entirely sure what kind of compliment that was, but she seemed happy, so I accepted it.
After that, we headed to the checkout to pay.
“Sorry, Yakumo-kun, for having you pay today.”
“You’ve been kind to me, and today you’re treating me, so this is the least I could do.”
“Treating you? But we’re both cooking together today, right?”
“Still, I’m using your kitchen, so it’s only fair.”
As we chatted, we moved toward the counter to pack our groceries.
“Thanks for everything, Yakumo-kun.”
“Anytime.”
I responded as I set the basket down. Then, Hatsune-san pulled out a fabric shopping bag from her purse.
“I’ve been thinking this since we started shopping, but Hatsune-san, you’re really homely, aren’t you?”
“Do you think so? Am I making a good impression on you, Yakumo-kun?”
“Impression? Well, yeah.”
“Hehe, I’m glad.”
Hatsune-san’s shy demeanor and words had an overwhelming effect.
As I watched her smile, one that I could never quite get used to, I couldn’t help but think.
By showcasing her domestic side, what exactly is Hatsune-san trying to convey to me?
Was I overthinking it, or was there something more to it?
