The Most Beautiful Girl In The School Wants To Cook Together.
The day after tomorrow.
It was just past 10 a.m.
The end-of-term ceremony for the first semester had arrived.
After listening to the principal’s rather lengthy and dull speech in the gymnasium, under the sweltering heat, I returned to the 2nd-year, Class 3 classroom with my classmates.
Only the homeroom before heading home remained.
Well, today was different from usual, as it marked the end of the term.
We would receive our report cards and be reminded of safety precautions for the long vacation, so it would likely take longer than usual.
(That said, summer vacation is finally just around the corner…)
As I relaxed, appreciating the coolness of the air-conditioned classroom, I waited for our homeroom teacher to arrive.
“Yakumo-kun, what would you like for lunch today?”
Hatsune-san, seated next to me, asked.
She had leaned against her desk and was pressing her cheek against the top surface.
The air conditioning kept the classroom cool, so the wooden desk would have been fairly cold if touched with bare skin. Especially after coming back from the scorching gymnasium.
That aside, what about lunch today?
“Since we’ll probably be able to leave before noon, should we go somewhere to eat?”
“Hmm, that sounds nice, but…”
Hatsune-san didn’t seem particularly enthusiastic about my suggestion.
“Oh? Wasn’t that what we were talking about?”
“Well, I was actually asking because I was thinking of cooking something for you, Yakumo-kun.”
“Oh, I see.”
I had misunderstood. She wasn’t asking about dining out; she was asking about what I’d like her to cook.
“So, Yakumo-kun, what would you like me to make?”
“That’s a tough one…”
I’m sure anything Hatsune-san cooks would taste great. But if I just answered “whatever you want,” it might put her in a bind.
I should give her some kind of suggestion, but it’s tricky.
“Oh, wait. What’s your favorite food, Hatsune-san?”
“Me? Well, I guess… omelette rice… or something like that.”
“Then I’d like to have omelette rice.”
Hatsune-san seemed a bit surprised by my response.
“I was planning to make something you like, Yakumo-kun…”
“I thought if I asked for your favorite, I’d get the dish you’re most confident in. Of course, I believe anything you make would be delicious.”
“Fuufu~~, if that’s the case, then let’s go with omelette rice.”
Hatsune-san smiled, as if she had been convinced.
It seemed my reasoning had been effective as a way to get my point across.
In fact, there was another reason I asked for Hatsune-san’s favorite dish.
I felt it would be rude to have her not only cook for me but also tailor the dish exactly to my preferences.
Wait, though.
If I really felt that way, there was no need to ask Hatsune-san to make it for me alone.
“Ah, right.”
“What’s wrong? Do you want a different dish after all?”
“No, omelette rice is fine, but… I feel bad about having you make it for me alone. How about we cook it together instead?”
“Cook together… with you?”
Hatsune-san looked momentarily puzzled.
But her expression quickly brightened, and her eyes sparkled.
“That sounds fun!”
“Then it’s settled.”
“Yeah, cooking with you… it feels like a team effort, and that sounds nice.”
Hatsune-san seemed to be getting excited about the idea already.
