Even A Former Introvert Carries Traces Of The Most Beautiful Girl In High School.
I left Hatsune-san’s room and headed toward the station.
I boarded the train and got off at the next station.
I had business at a coffee shop near the station, right in the middle of the office district.
I was meeting someone at that shop.
Upon entering the retro-styled shop, I immediately noticed something unusual: despite its prime location, there were surprisingly few customers.
Thanks to this, I was able to spot the person I was meeting without much trouble.
“Hey, Yakumo.”
The person greeted me, peeking out from a table in the back and giving a light wave.
She was a slender, blonde woman dressed in punk-style clothing that seemed out of place in the office district.
Additionally, her ears were unusually long.
She appeared to be in her mid-twenties, but her actual age was unknown.
What was certain, though, was that she was far older than she looked.
This was because she was a witch from another world—and an elf.
“It’s been a while, Diona.”
I made my way to the table where Diona was sitting.
“So, what’s so urgent that you called me out here?” she asked, her voice carrying an amused tone.
“I need a favor.”
I sat down across from her.
Diona flashed a grin, showing her white teeth.
“I have a pretty good idea of what this is about. It’s about the parents of the girl you like, right?”
Diona worked as an information broker, traveling between two worlds.
I didn’t fully understand her methods, but one thing was certain: she was no ordinary being.
“Isn’t it a bit odd that you know so much about my personal life just because you’re an information broker?” I asked, slightly uneasy.
“Important information is always my business. I keep track of everything around you. For instance, I even know when you lost your virginity.”
“…”
That was unsettling, to say the least.
“Master, get him a hot coffee.”
Whether or not she noticed my internal discomfort, Diona ordered a hot coffee for me from the shopkeeper.
“…But honestly, is hot coffee really the best choice for this season?”
“It’s on me, so don’t complain.”
Though I felt it was a bit excessive for her to treat me to a cup of coffee, considering her seniority, I kept my thoughts to myself, since she was paying.
“Anyway, since you already know the situation, let’s get straight to it. I need you to look into the whereabouts of Hatsune-san’s parents.”
“I don’t mind, but from now on, it’ll cost you. The debts were cleared when you brought me to this world, and after the information manipulation from last time.”
Right.
With Diona’s help, I had managed to return to this world from the other one.
Additionally, she had assisted me in resolving the bullying that Hatsune-san had been facing.
I had accumulated a considerable debt to Diona in the other world, but it seemed that, in her mind, that debt had already been cleared.
“If it’s money, I don’t have any. I’m just a high school student here, at least in terms of financial power.”
“I’m not expecting money from you either.”
“Then what do you want?”
“Rather than wanting something, I want to create a debt with you this time.”
“So, you’re saying it’s fine now, but I’ll have to pay it back later?”
“That’s exactly what I mean.”
Diona shook a glass filled with coffee and large ice cubes, making a rattling sound.
“…That sounds a little intimidating.”
“But you don’t really have anything to pay me with, do you?”
What Diona was looking for wasn’t money—it was something to satisfy her curiosity as a witch.
Something like unknown information, perhaps.
But I had nothing of that sort.
“Fine, I’ll accept the terms.”
“You’re quick to understand, Yakumo.”
“By the way, you don’t already know where they are, do you?”
“No, I’ll be searching from here. I plan to use detection magic for the search, but… in order to locate the person, I’ll need a catalyst tied to either them or their blood relatives.”
Diona casually dropped a fantastical term—magic. It had been a while since I’d heard anything like that.
“A catalyst, like what?”
“The easiest example would be something that the person regularly came into contact with.”
“I don’t have anything like that here, at least not in this place.”
If I asked Hatsune-san, she might be able to provide something, but explaining the situation would be a bit tricky.
Actually, if Diona already had an idea of what I needed, it would’ve been nice if she had mentioned this earlier.
“So the easiest thing would be that… Does that mean anything else will work?”
“Yes. A blood relative’s belongings… In this case, I’m talking about the possessions of the girl you’re so infatuated with.”
Hatsune-san’s belongings, huh.
“Unfortunately, I don’t have those either.”
“Then you can use something of your own.”
“Excuse me?”
Something of my own? What does that mean?
“Strictly speaking, I mean a part of your body. You’ve been so close to that girl—the one you like, Hatsune-san, right?—that her traces are likely strongly imprinted on you.”
My body carries traces of Hatsune-san.
It makes sense, considering we’ve spent so much time together.
I hadn’t really noticed it, but somehow, that thought makes me a little happy.
Still, a part of my body… What does she mean by that?
“Are you planning to ask for one of my organs or something?”
“Not to that extent. A few strands of your hair will be enough.”
“I see, in that case…”
“Then the contract is settled.”
Before I could finish my agreement, Diona roughly grabbed a handful of my hair and pulled out several strands.
“Don’t do it so suddenly. That hurts.”
“You can handle this much, right?”
“Well… if a few strands of hair can lead to finding Hatsune-san’s parents, then it might be worth it. Thanks.”
“For me, it’s a good deal too. I get a sample of you while just looking for a person.”
Did she just say something I shouldn’t have heard?
“Are you planning to use my hair for some experiment or something?”
“Yep. Actually, you only need one strand of hair for detection magic.”
“Always so slick, huh…”
So, it seems like the rest of my hair will be used for some experiment or other.
Is she planning to analyze my cells to gather information?
Well, I’ll have to let that go for now.
What really concerns me is what will happen to the strands of hair she just cut.
“Do you really think there’s a chance that Hatsune-san’s parents were transferred to another world?”
I gave Diona a serious look.
Diona leisurely finished her iced coffee, set the glass on the table, and then spoke.
“Most likely, yes. Her parents were somewhat famous, so I’ve looked into them before… but at that time, I couldn’t find anything about their whereabouts.”
“Wait, there are so many things I need to ask about that.”
Hatsune-san’s parents are famous?
I remember her mentioning they were part of some company’s executive family, but could they be from a bigger company than I imagined?
And, even someone like Diona—who can move between two worlds and gather information—couldn’t find anything? How is that even possible?
Not to mention, she stayed quiet about all this until the deal was done.
She’s definitely someone who can’t be underestimated.
“Well, I’m interested in this case myself. That’s why I’m going to use this catalyst and cast a proper detection spell between this world and the other one.”
Diona’s previously carefree expression became more serious.
While she certainly has some untrustworthy aspects, once a deal is made, she doesn’t hold back.
It’s because she has this honest side that she can operate as an information broker.
“I see… then, let me ask you one more thing.”
“Greedy, aren’t you?”
Diona teased me, but I continued without paying her any mind.
“After I spent several years in the other world, when I came back, only a month had passed. That means the flow of time is different in both worlds, right?”
I asked the question after imagining the worst possible outcome that might arise from this.
“Hahaha!”
Diona suddenly burst out laughing, her laughter echoing through the entire café.
It was fortunate that there were no other customers except the shopkeeper.
“What’s gotten into you? I’m serious here.”
“If the flow of time is different in the two worlds, then there’s no advantage in going back and forth. If you leave and return, the people you were doing business with might be gone.”
I understood what she was implying.
Even if you gather information, it’s pointless if there’s no one to receive it.
“But… what exactly does that mean?”
“It means the opposite of what you’re thinking.”
“The opposite?”
“Anyway, don’t worry. Nothing like the situation you’re imagining is going to happen.”
As she said that, Diona stood up, holding the bill.
I got up, trying to stop her.
“Hey, explain it properly!”
“If you want more information from an information broker, you’ll need to pay the price.”
Diona quickly handed the bill and payment to the shopkeeper.
“Wait!”
“The rest of the details will come after the investigation is done. Until then, just enjoy spending time with your girlfriend, Hatsune.”
With a wave of her hand, Diona ignored my attempts to stop her and walked out of the café.
“…Damn it.”
Left alone, I sat down in the chair, filled with a sense of frustration.
I looked out the window, and it was already dusk.
(It seems I won’t have time to meet Hatsune-san now…)
I thought I might try a video call with her once I get home. At that moment, the shopkeeper finally brought me the hot coffee.
