The Most Beautiful Girl In High School Shyly Lowers The Air Conditioner Temperature.
After the long homeroom and evening assembly, it was finally after school. I was at Hatsune-san’s room. Today, we had planned to decide on our summer vacation plans together.
“Here you go. Is barley tea okay?”
Hatsune-san brought two glasses on a tray and set them down in front of me, sitting next to me as she placed them on the low table.
“Thanks. This is perfect for the season.”
The glass was covered in droplets of water. When I picked it up, it was as cold as it looked. I took a few quick gulps.
“Fuufuu~. It’s cheap barley tea, but you make it look so good when you drink it.”
“Honestly, anything you prepare is delicious, Hatsune-san. And with this heat, it’s even better.”
“Fuufuufu~~. I’m glad to hear that, but I’d appreciate it if you didn’t make me blush too much. My body temperature rises.”
Hatsune-san reached for the remote on the table and lowered the air conditioner by one degree.
“I don’t really get it, but okay.”
“Hmm, Yakumo-kun, you can be so dense sometimes.”
Hatsune-san let out a small laugh when she heard my clueless reply.
“Sorry about that.”
“It’s not something you need to apologize for. Anyway, let’s think about our fun summer plans.”
Hatsune-san shifted closer to me, casually taking out her phone. Despite mentioning her body temperature rising, she was sitting closer than usual. The air conditioner kept things cool, so it wasn’t too uncomfortable.
“Yeah, let’s decide on a travel destination first.”
“Mm. I still think the hot spring town we talked about before would be nice.”
Hatsune-san opened a website on her phone and showed it to me. She seemed well-prepared for this. It was clear she had a strong preference for it.
“Alright, let’s go with that.”
“You’re okay with that so quickly? Don’t you have any suggestions?”
Hatsune-san seemed surprised by how easily I agreed.
“It’s not that I don’t have a place I’d like to visit, but… for our first trip, I want to fulfill your wish, Hatsune-san.”
When I said what I had been thinking, Hatsune-san didn’t react right away. She turned her head slightly away and remained silent.
“Huh? Hatsune-san?”
“…Yakumo-kun, are you trying to make me embarrassed on purpose?”
“Sorry. Honestly, half of it was on purpose.”
“Hmph, why would you do something like that?”
Hatsune-san pouted slightly, shooting me a protesting glance.
“When I say what I think, it’s just that your embarrassed face is so cute.”
“Y-You always do this… saying things that make me blush so easily…!”
Hatsune-san was no longer trying to hide her bright red face, muttering under her breath.
“Well… I suppose, if we keep this up, we won’t get anywhere. I’ll be more careful with my words.”
I calmly spoke while enjoying the sight of her blushing face. The fact that I—an introverted loner—could interact so naturally with a beautiful girl like Hatsune-san was something I never imagined possible before. I felt like maybe I had grown a little… but just as I was getting carried away with that thought, Hatsune-san tugged at my uniform sleeve.
“Ah… um… like I said earlier, please keep it moderate, okay?”
Hatsune-san looked up at me with a somewhat dissatisfied expression, making me rethink my earlier words. She was just too cute—so cute, in fact, that she could easily disrupt my calm composure.

After taking a deep breath, we decided to finally get down to business and plan the trip.
“Alright, so we’ll settle on the hot spring town for our trip,” Hatsune-san said again, a little more firmly this time.
“Yeah. Now, we just need to figure out when during the long summer break would be best.”
“If you’re okay with it, I was thinking about the 29th and 30th of July.”
Hatsune-san pointed to the calendar on the table.
The 29th and 30th were a Saturday and Sunday.
“Is something happening on those days?” I asked.
“There’s a fireworks festival on the night of the 29th, so I thought it would be nice to time the trip with that,” she explained.
“Ah, I see. But is it even possible to make a reservation at this point?” I asked, skeptical.
With only ten days left until the desired date, booking for an event-filled weekend would probably be tough.
“According to what I found, there still seems to be a little availability,” she said, showing me her phone’s reservation page.
Indeed, there seemed to be open rooms.
“Then let’s go ahead and book it for that weekend,” I decided.
“Yay! I’ll enter all the details right now…” Hatsune-san eagerly typed out her information on the reservation form.
“All done… Fuufuu~, I’m really excited,” she said, smiling.
“Me too,” I replied, a grin slowly creeping onto my face as well. I was really looking forward to spending time with her at the hot spring.
“But… you know, when I think of summer, I also think about going to the beach. I kind of want to show you my swimsuit,” Hatsune-san said, as if pondering something.
“Your swimsuit, huh…” The idea immediately caught my attention. Seeing her in a swimsuit on the beach would definitely draw a lot of eyes.
But then again, I wasn’t fond of other people staring at her too much.
“You’re imagining things, aren’t you?” Hatsune-san teased.
“Am I that easy to read?” I replied, a little embarrassed.
“Yep, very easy,” she grinned, covering her mouth as she almost burst into laughter.
We continued to plan the rest of our summer, including the beach trip and our duties for the cultural festival, marking everything on the calendar. But as I was doing so, I noticed several days marked with an “X.”
“Hatsune-san, what’s this ‘X’ on the calendar?”
“Ah, well…”
Hatsune-san hesitated, looking a bit uneasy.
“It’s okay if it’s something hard to say,” I said, trying to ease her mind.
“It’s not that big of a deal,” she replied, though her voice sounded a little down. “These X marks mean that my relatives asked me to keep those days free.”
Hatsune-san sighed with a touch of melancholy.
“Relatives, huh… Is it the one who’s been pretending to be your guardian just to get their hands on your inheritance?” I asked, immediately sensing who she meant.
“Yeah, that’s the one. They told me, ‘Come visit my house on those days.'”
That was the house where Hatsune-san had lived with her parents before. It seemed outrageous for them to refer to it as “my house” when it originally belonged to her family.
“Well, if you really don’t want to go, you don’t have to. You can just ignore it,” I suggested.
“I could, but… It’s more trouble if they show up here uninvited or interfere with my life now. It’s easier just to go,” she said, sounding resigned, as though she’d dealt with this kind of nuisance before.
I could tell she’d been through a lot with these relatives already.
“If that’s how it is… I understand. If anything troublesome comes up, feel free to talk to me,” I offered sincerely.
“Thanks, Yakumo-kun,” she said, her voice soft with gratitude.
Then, without hesitation, she placed her hand over mine on the table. Her fingers intertwined with mine, holding onto me with a gentle but firm grip. After a moment, she took a deep breath.
“Ha… There’s no point in letting these annoying people ruin my mood. Let’s get back to planning some fun stuff, okay?”
Her ability to smile and move forward so quickly, even in the face of such frustration, left me in awe. I could see how strong she was. And at that moment, I felt more than ever that I wanted to be there for her.

After that, we quickly shifted our mood and continued to plan for the summer vacation, the atmosphere light and cheerful.
“Alright, I think we’ve pretty much filled out the schedule,” I said, feeling a sense of accomplishment.
“This… this is shaping up to be a really fulfilling summer,” Hatsune-san replied, her face lighting up with a satisfied smile.
After our discussion, we had planned several outings together during the summer break.
“I still feel like there’s not enough, but… I guess we can just play it by ear once summer actually starts,” she added, her tone soft but content.
With that, Hatsune-san leaned in and cuddled against me, her arms wrapping around me in an affectionate gesture.
“Hehe.”
“What’s up, Hatsune-san?” I asked, slightly confused by her sudden change.
“I’m a bit tired from all the planning, so I’m in the mood to be spoiled,” she said, her voice light but laced with a hint of playful mischief.
“I see,” I replied, trying to hide my smile.
“By the way, Yakumo-kun, do you have any plans after this…?” she asked, still holding onto me, her gaze fixed on mine.
Ah. That look. It felt familiar.
She was clearly trying to tempt me. Usually, I’d be easily swept up in this kind of situation, but today… today was different.
“Actually, I do have plans,” I said, trying to keep my composure.
“Really? That’s surprising,” she said, her eyes widening as she clung to me even tighter.
“…Well, I guess there’s no helping it,” she muttered, almost as though trying to convince herself, slowly pulling away from me.
Her reluctance to let go was obvious.
I couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming urge to pull her back into a hug, but I resisted. If I gave in, it’d lead to the same old situation. And I didn’t want that to happen.
