- Chapter 39: The Most Beautiful Girl In High School Trusts Her Boyfriend.
The Most Beautiful Girl In High School Trusts Her Boyfriend.
July 7th, Friday.
Today is the day I promised Hatsune-san. We decided to head to our destination after school.
After getting on the train from the nearest station around 4 PM, we traveled for nearly an hour before arriving at a coastal town in the neighboring prefecture. It’s a fairly urban area and also famous as a tourist spot.
“I didn’t expect it to be this lively…”
That was my first impression as I stepped out of the station’s ticket gate. The area in front of the station was bustling with tourists, students, and even office workers, all moving about.
“Did you imagine it would have a more subdued atmosphere?” Hatsune-san asked.
“To be honest, yes.”
I had heard that this area is well-known as a date spot. Indeed, many couples were walking around us. In a way, it might be a fitting place for Hatsune-san and me, but that’s not why we came this time.
“While the atmosphere around the station might make it feel like we came here for a day of fun… Well, I’ll explain everything once we get to our actual destination,” she said.
Hatsune-san took a deep breath, as if reminiscing about the town’s air, and then started walking.

After walking a short distance from the station, we arrived at a seaside park.
This place is known for its beautiful scenery, where one can gaze at large ships coming and going in the sea and harbor. Paved pathways were bustling with many people.
Although it’s a famous spot, it was my first time here. I walked beside Hatsune-san, who was heading straight toward a particular destination.
Eventually, Hatsune-san stopped in front of a bench installed within the park.
This spot faced the sea, offering a good view, but it was hidden from the pathway by the flowers planted in the flowerbeds.
As a result, no one was sitting there.
“Alright, we’ve arrived. Just as I thought, no one is here…”
Hatsune-san cast her eyes down slightly.
Her tone suggested she had hoped someone might be seated there.
“Is this the place you wanted to bring me?”
“Yeah. Eight years ago, on July 7th… my father and mother, who should have been here, disappeared.”
Hatsune-san spoke while staring intently at the wooden bench.
“Disappeared…?”
“It means exactly that. I guess you could say they went missing.”
“Missing…”
That term echoed in my mind, sounding vaguely familiar.
“When I was in elementary school at the time, I had come here to play with my parents. The three of us were sitting on this bench, but at some point, I must have dozed off. When I woke up, I found I was the only one left.”
Her story sounded almost like something out of a fairy tale, as if she had been spirited away, devoid of any logical sequence.
If someone else were to hear this, they might dismiss it as a fabricated story.
Yet, I didn’t question it at all.
I had experienced something similar myself.
Though in my case, it was I who had vanished.
“Did anyone see your parents leave?”
At my question, Hatsune-san shook her head.
“No one was around. At first, I thought my mom and dad were just playing a prank on me, so I looked for them, but they really were gone… In my younger days, I was lost and alone for a while.”
“That sounds… really tough.”
“Yeah. In the end, I went to the police box to have them investigate the situation, and that’s when the fact that my parents had gone missing was confirmed… Ever since then, I’ve been all alone.”
Hatsune-san slowly sat down on the bench.
“Even so, every year on July 7th, I come here in hopes that they might return… but once again, they were not here this year.”
Her words were heavy and whispered softly.
Hatsune-san’s eyes glistened with unshed tears.
“Didn’t you have any relatives you could rely on besides your parents?”
“I do have relatives, but none who would consider my feelings. They’re quite a heartless bunch.”
“…”
That might be a more painful situation than having no relatives at all from the beginning.
“Well, I do have an uncle who is supposed to be my guardian, but that’s just a formality. In reality, he took over the house and assets my family used to live in, under the pretext of managing them.”
Hatsune-san spoke in an oddly light tone, perhaps to hide her true feelings.
But rather than strong attachments to her family, she seemed to lack any real concern about the assets.
“Is that why you live alone?”
“Yeah. Until middle school, I lived in the old house with my uncle’s family, but when I entered high school, I was kicked out.”
“That’s… ridiculous.”
I found myself clenching my fist unconsciously.
Whether she noticed or not, Hatsune-san let out a small laugh.
“Still, I have quite a bit of money that my parents left me. My dad was a cautious person, so I was able to protect my bank account and savings.”
Hatsune-san said this proudly.
Once someone moved into a house, it wasn’t impossible to stay indefinitely, and it seemed they could easily take valuables.
Yet her relatives couldn’t touch her savings.
Still, listening to her story, it sounded like Hatsune-san had grown up in quite a wealthy environment.
“Are you actually a well-to-do young lady?”
“Well, sort of. I’m the daughter of a family that owns a pretty large company… because of that, I’m able to live comfortably while attending high school with my dad’s savings. To be honest, if I wanted to, I could live a life of leisure for the rest of my life.”
But in reality, Hatsune-san wasn’t doing that.
If anything, it was quite the opposite.
She worked hard enough in her studies to consistently rank at the top of her class.
“Is there a goal you have for working hard instead of just enjoying life?”
“Yeah. I want to become a respectable person, even if I can’t reach the level of a big company president. I’m doing my best to become independent enough so that my mom and dad, who are probably still out there somewhere, can feel at ease.”
Hatsune-san added, a bit shyly, “Well, part of it is because I can’t rely on my relatives.”
“You’re amazing, Hatsune-san.”
“Eh? Amazing…?”
I thought I had said something serious, but Hatsune-san looked bewildered.
“Oh, I might have said something strange just now.”
“No, I’m happy that you think I’m amazing. But…”
“But?”
“The reason I can keep moving forward now is because of you, Yakumo-kun.”
Hatsune-san wore a bright smile.
“Because of me?”
“Yeah. Honestly, just before I met you, I was pretty close to my limit. I was being bullied while being all alone, and I had no one to rely on. I was a bit self-destructive too.”
Hatsune-san looked back on her past with self-deprecation.
Indeed, I thought it was reckless of her to think that jumping off would deal a blow to her bullies, but I could understand how she might have felt desperate.
“Back then, you were doing all sorts of reckless things… so it makes sense that you were feeling self-destructive.”
“But ever since that day you helped me, a lot of my worries just disappeared!”
As she said this, Hatsune-san casually leaned her head toward me.
…Does this mean she wants me to pet her?
Prompted into action without a word, I gently stroked Hatsune-san’s head and continued.
“If I’m able to help you, that’s great.”
“Yeah! I’m glad I talked to you, Yakumo-kun. It’s tough to keep everything bottled up by yourself.”
Hatsune-san seemed pleased as she squinted her eyes while I petted her.
Her tone sounded surprisingly light.
“That’s true. Now that I know about your situation, there might be things I can help with… although I might not be that reliable.”
I wanted to say something cool here.
That’s what I thought, but the words just wouldn’t come out.
“Hmmm, you still seem pretty lacking in confidence, huh?”
“…Well, yeah.”
“I trust you a lot, Yakumo-kun, so you should have more confidence! If I didn’t trust you, I wouldn’t talk to you about any of this.”
Trust.
Hearing that word from Hatsune-san made me genuinely happy.
“Thank you. You’ve actually encouraged me, and I realize I need to get my act together.”
“Hehe, that’s true. But I think it’s really cool how you always try to be there for me, Yakumo-kun.”
Feeling my temperature rise at her words, I thought to myself.
I haven’t changed at all in my infatuation.
That aside, the person I adore trusts me enough to open up about her past and inner struggles.
I have to live up to that trust.
