The Former Introvert Returned from Another World Reveals the Secret of His Power.
“Well then. Next, I guess I’ll listen to your story, Yakumo-kun.”
By the time the orange sun had dropped quite low in the sky, I was sitting on a bench by the seaside with Hatsune-san.
When Hatsune-san scored perfect marks in all subjects on her final exams, it was agreed that I would reveal the secret behind my abilities.
“Hatsune-san, you wanted to know the secret behind my abilities, but specifically, which one are you talking about?”
I tried to feign ignorance, but it was in vain.
“Of course, I want to know all of it. Like how you somehow weren’t hurt when you fell from the rooftop, or how you always seem to rush to my side when I’m in trouble, acting like you can see through everything. Or how you performed amazingly well in soccer. Oh, and how you rescued a child about to be hit by a car, all cool and heroic.”
Hatsune-san started listing all the unnatural things I had done that she had witnessed.
“Alright. I’ll tell you everything.”
“Good, I’m counting on you.”
When I gave in, Hatsune-san nodded in satisfaction.
Now, I had said I would tell her everything, but where should I start?
I sat next to Hatsune-san and thought for a moment.
Alright. When in doubt, it’s better to start with the conclusion rather than the details.
“Actually, I was teleported to another world a week before the new semester started.”
“Another world…?”
“Yeah. And when I came back, only a month had passed, even though I had spent several years over there. Also, I was able to bring back the superhuman physical abilities and skills I gained there.”
“R-Really…?”
As expected, Hatsune-san looked confused.
“Yeah, I know it’s hard to believe.”
“Hmm… But you’re not joking, right?”
“You might not believe it, but it’s the truth.”
“I see. Well, if you say it’s true, then I believe you.”
Hatsune-san accepted it surprisingly easily.
Honestly, I had prepared myself to be thought of as a crazy person with weird delusions.
“Aren’t you going to doubt me a little more?”
“I did think for a second that you were joking. But I had a feeling there was something unreal about your powers, Yakumo-kun. So when you said you got them in another world, in a way, I could understand it.”
“I see…”
It seemed that having shown her my abilities a few times made it easier for her to accept.
“And besides, the idea of skills from another world actually sounds interesting.”
“Interesting…?”
“Yeah. I’ve been thinking of all kinds of ways it could be useful. For example, don’t you ever think about using your powers to make a lot of money?”
When I first realized that the powers I gained in the other world had followed me back to this world, I did think about using them for such mundane purposes.
But…
“If I use my powers too flamboyantly, it’ll stand out and nothing good will come of it.”
“That’s a heavy statement.”
“When I first got my powers in the other world, I got cocky and started using them, which attracted people who wanted to exploit me.”
“Exploit you? Like… how?”
Hatsune-san didn’t seem to fully grasp the situation.
“They asked me to defeat a ‘bad dragon’ causing trouble at the border, and when I did, it turned out it was actually the guardian deity of a rival country. Or they told me to save the world by defeating the ‘demon king’ who was attacking humans, so I spent over a year risking my life to do it, only to find out it was actually humans who were attacking the demons.”
Back then, I was so caught up in my newfound powers that I didn’t understand the malice of others.
“Wow… that sounds like an epic fantasy. Yakumo-kun, you must have gone through a lot.”
Hatsune-san’s eyes widened as she listened to my story. Then, she lifted herself slightly and patted my head.
With a gentle look in her eyes, she seemed to be comforting me.
It was nice to be pampered by her, but it also made me think maybe I could return the favor.
The warmth of the moment made me feel very peaceful.
“Because of all that happened in the other world… meeting you, Hatsune-san, and being able to help you, I now see it as a good memory.”
“Yakumo-kun, are you trying to make me embarrassed?”
Hatsune-san puffed out her lips. The golden light of the setting sun seemed to make her cheeks even redder than usual.
“I wasn’t trying to, but since you’re so cute, I guess it’s okay.”
“W-Wait, Yakumo-kun, you’re being more direct today than usual…”
Hatsune-san was completely flustered.
But, truth be told, I did feel like what she said was true. I wondered why that was.
After thinking for a moment, I reached a conclusion.
“Probably because I feel relieved after confessing something I’ve kept from you.”
Honestly, I had always worried whether or not you would believe me if I told you about the other world.
But, in the end, that worry was unfounded.
“So, Yakumo-kun, you’re letting your guard down and saying things you don’t usually say?”
Hatsune-san pouted a little, but at the same time, she seemed pleased as she spoke.
Then, she leaned her head on my shoulder with a soft “plop.”
“Hatsune-san…?”
“I just want to be spoiled a little.”
“I see.”
It didn’t feel bad to be spoiled—if anything, it made me feel good too.
Noticing that I wasn’t rejecting her, Hatsune-san leaned in closer, rubbing her cheek against me, enjoying the warmth.
“By the way… Do you think your physique is better than others in our grade because you’ve lived a few extra years in the other world, and that’s made you grow more than the others?”
Hatsune-san, still resting her head on me, seemed to have that question on her mind.
“Probably, that’s the case.”
“Huh? Does that mean you’re actually older than me, Yakumo-kun?”
“Physically, I’d say I’m about 19 years old.”
“I see, so that’s why you’re so…”
Hatsune-san started to examine my whole body, looking me over with a focused gaze. As her eyes moved down slightly, she seemed to begin to say something, but then stopped herself.
“Ahem. Anyway, as for your body… no wonder you’re so reliable.”
She cleared her throat, trying to act composed.
I wondered what she was going to say, but the conversation had already moved on, so I decided to go along with it.
“You say I’m reliable, but… honestly, I haven’t really grown much mentally.”
After all, I had spent my time being used by others and fighting their battles.
While my body became stronger and I started to sense people’s malice, I hadn’t had many chances to communicate properly, either with the opposite sex or with anyone else. As a result, my introverted, lone-wolf tendencies hadn’t changed in the other world.
“Well, in terms of being approachable, I think it’s a good thing,” Hatsune-san said.
“I’m glad you think so,” I replied.
I moved a little closer, being careful not to put too much weight on her. I didn’t feel any resistance from Hatsune-san, which made me feel accepted.
…Why is it that a person’s warmth feels so comforting?
“This spot has a really nice view of the sunset,” Hatsune-san murmured, gazing at the seaside port town bathed in the golden light of the setting sun.
This must be the kind of view she would have shared with her parents when she was a child. Thinking about that made me feel a little sad.
“Yeah, it’s beautiful,” I said.
To be able to see this important view with Hatsune-san… to share the things we’d kept inside with each other… I felt that our bond had deepened in that moment.
