After that, nothing in particular happened. I made it through from first period to fourth without any issue. Finally, the morning classes were over, and it was lunchtime. It went without saying that I had been looking forward to lunch since around the third period because I was totally wiped out, probably because it had been a while since I last had classes.
“Might as well head to the usual spot.”
Since I was a loner, it went without saying that I didn’t have anyone to eat with. So I usually spent my lunch break outside the classroom. At first, I tried eating alone in the classroom like it was no big deal, but after getting hit with too many pitying looks, I just couldn’t take it anymore.
I grabbed the bread and juice I’d bought from the convenience store that morning, got up from my seat, and headed for the courtyard. My usual routine was to eat lunch in the courtyard and then kill time reading light novels in the library.
“Yeah. This place really is the most relaxing.”
Despite the beautiful view, this place was a bit of a hidden gem with few people around. If I were to borrow the words of that protagonist from the novel “My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong As I Expected,” this place was definitely my Best Place.
I was sitting on the step. Just as I was about to open the bread wrapper, I heard the slow sound of someone’s footsteps approaching. When I looked up, there stood Riona, holding a bag with a lunchbox and chopsticks in it.
“Ryouya, what are you doing in a place like this?”
“Oh. I was wondering who it was, but it’s just you, Riona. As you can see, I’m having my lonely lunch here.”
“Right. Because you’re a loner, you don’t have anyone to eat with.”
“That’s right. So could you not casually hit me with a critical hit—no, a devastating blow to my already wrecked mental state?”
Seriously, why is Riona even here? Maybe she just happened to pass by coincidentally.
Just as I was thinking that, Riona sat down right next to me.
“…Uh… So what are you doing here, Riona-san?”
“I decided to have my lunch here too.”
“No, no, come on. You’ve got tons of people in your class to eat with, right?”
I didn’t know exactly where Riona stood in her class’s social hierarchy, but if she was anything like Reona, she was probably part of the upper caste. Which meant there was absolutely no reason for her to be having lunch with someone like me.
Actually, being seen with someone like me—firmly planted at the bottom of the school caste—might have had a negative influence on her image.
“I already made up my mind. Besides, Onee-chan will be here soon too.”
“Wait. Reona is coming too!?”
“Yeah, she’s already on her way.”
Riona said this while fiddling with her smartphone. If I remembered right, Reona usually had lunch with her class group. Was it really okay for her to ditch them? Well, I couldn’t imagine anyone would dare go against a queen bee like Reona.
While I was pondering that, Reona arrived.
“Sorry to keep you waiting. Okay, let’s eat.”
“Wait, you two are seriously planning to eat here?”
“Yeah, of course.”
“It’s already been decided that we will eat here.”
Reona smiled at me cheerfully while Riona, as always, had her cool expression on.
Yeah, there’s no point in arguing with them anymore.
Well, this spot didn’t have many people passing by, so at least I didn’t have to worry too much about being seen. Just as I resigned myself and started to open the bread bag again, Reona stopped me.
“Oh, Ryouya-kun, you don’t have to eat that bread. We made lunch for you too.”
“Wait, what!?”
“Onee-chan and I worked really hard on it this morning.”
I had assumed this whole thing had started with Riona randomly passing by and calling Reona on a whim so they could have lunch together. But if that were the case, it wouldn’t make sense for them to already have a lunch prepared for me. That could only mean they had planned from the beginning to spend lunch with me.
But I never told anyone I ate here, so how did they even find out where I usually ate? No matter how much I thought about it, I couldn’t figure it out. If anything, it just made the mystery around them even deeper.
“Were you really that happy you got so surprised? Well, anyway, try it.”
“We guarantee it’ll taste good.”
“…Thanks.”
I had a lot of questions, but for now, I accepted the lunchbox from Reona. When I opened the lid, I saw hamburger steak, tamagoyaki, fried chicken, broccoli, and white rice. It was a simple lunch, but it looked seriously delicious. I decided to start with a bite of the tamagoyaki.
“This is really good.”
“Right? We’re super confident with our cooking.”
“Onee-chan and I worked hard on it this morning.”
Appearance-wise, it looked like an ordinary tamagoyaki, but the taste was shockingly delicious. Incidentally, the same side dishes were in both Reona and Riona’s lunchboxes. I started sampling the other dishes one after another.
“Yeah, every single one of these is delicious… But the ketchup on the hamburger steak tastes a little different somehow. What’s up with that?”
“Oh, I added a secret ingredient to the ketchup. Maybe it didn’t quite suit your taste?”
“Sorry about that.”
“What was the secret ingredient?”
“It’s my secret family recipe, so I’m afraid I can’t tell you.”
The flavor reminded me of iron, which only made me more curious about the secret ingredient, but they both stubbornly refused to tell me. The only hint I got was that “love” was somehow involved, which made it even harder to guess, so I gave up trying to figure it out for now.
While chatting with the two of them, I finished the meal in no time. Since I intended to wash and return the lunchbox and chopsticks, I reached out to take them.
“Oh, it’s okay. Riona and I will take care of washing the chopsticks and lunchbox, so you don’t have to worry about it, Ryouya-kun.”
“I already feel bad enough that you made me lunch, now I’d be making you clean up too?”
“It’s fine. We’ll do it.”
“If you two insist, then… I’ll gratefully accept your offer.”
I still had no idea why they were doing all this for me, but it felt like pushing the issue any further would be pointless, so I let it go.
