ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
The long-awaited school trip had finally begun, and on the first day, we were on the Shinkansen. It had already been two hours since we boarded at Tokyo Station, so we were about to arrive soon.
“Ryouya-kun, look, Riona. Outside the window. It totally looks like Kyoto!”
“You’re right, I can see a five-storied pagoda.”
“Onee-chan, you’re way too hyped.”
“You’re trying to act all cool, but Riona looks pretty excited too.”
“Yeah. Her mouth’s turned up more than usual.”
When I pointed that out, Riona looked just a little embarrassed. At first, I had struggled to read her expressions, but now I could usually tell what she was feeling. That was thanks to all the intense time we had spent together.
“What are we doing after we get off the Shinkansen again?”
“Group photo.”
“I think we’re supposed to take the group photo in front of the big staircase at Kyoto Station.”
“Oh, isn’t that the place where you can see the sky?”
“It’s sunny today, so I think we’ll get a really nice photo.”
While chatting about things like that, the Shinkansen arrived at Kyoto Station. After getting off, we followed our chaperone and began moving through the station.
“Still, there are a lot of foreigners here.”
“Kyoto is popular with tourists from abroad.”
“Our grandma said she loves Kyoto too. She might even know more about it than we do.”
“Come to think of it, your grandma’s British, right?”
“We inherited our eye color from Grandma.”
That meant, like Reona and Riona, their grandmother must have blue eyes. I’d heard it was pretty rare for even half-Japanese or quarter-Japanese people to have blue eyes, so they must’ve hit a genetic jackpot.
For a brief moment, I wondered if I’d have been more popular with girls too, if I had some foreign blood like Reona and Riona. But something told me that saying that out loud would bring terrifying consequences, so I kept it to myself.
“If a foreigner comes up and starts talking to me in English, you guys better help me. With my level, I don’t even know if I can hold a basic English conversation.”
“No worries if I’m there.”
“Yeah, Riona’s basically fluent.”
“That’s a relief.”
While having that conversation, we reached the big staircase and lined up as instructed by our teacher. The sky was a beautiful clear blue, so we were bound to get a stunning photo. When the photo shoot started, both of them pressed up against me from either side so hard that I ended up getting glares from the other guys like I had killed their parents with my own hands. Since I usually spent my time with Reona and Riona, I’d grown used to those kinds of looks, so it didn’t faze me at all.
“Even though Riona and I are clinging to you, your reaction is way too dull.”
“The old Ryouya would’ve totally freaked out.”
“Maybe I’ve built up some tolerance after all the chaos you two have put me through.”
I said that to the two of them, who were walking beside me looking dissatisfied.
You two are the ones who made me like this.
“I see. Ryouya-kun’s body won’t be satisfied unless we give him stronger stimulation now.”
“We’ll have to broaden our repertoire when it comes to teasing Ryouya, so things don’t get stale.”
“Seriously, quit phrasing things in ways that are just begging for people to misunderstand.”
What if people start thinking I’m some kind of pervert? Well, I’m a loner anyway, so I guess I don’t really care what others think.
After that, we moved to the Hachijō exit of Kyoto Station under the guidance of our teacher and got on a chartered bus. Except for the very back, all the seats were two-seaters, so it seemed unlikely the three of us could sit together. Thinking that, I tried to take an empty seat somewhere else, but Reona and Riona both grabbed my arms tightly and stopped me.
“Ryouya-kun, you’re sitting with us in the very back.”
“We won’t allow you to sit anywhere else.”
“But isn’t the very back super competitive? I bet a ton of people want that spot.”
The very back of the bus on a school trip was kind of the holy land for extroverts, and I figured the competition would be intense.
“Oh, don’t worry. We already negotiated with everyone.”
“Yeah, we explained that it would just be me, Onee-chan, and Ryouya, and they were cool with it.”
Apparently, while I wasn’t paying attention, they had already handled everything. I had no idea what kind of negotiation they pulled off, but I had to admit—they were impressive.
“See? We won’t just leave Ryouya-kun unattended.”
“It’s dangerous if he’s not near me or Onee-chan.”
“Hey, what do you guys even think I am?”
Stop treating me like some kind of helpless toddler. In fact, sitting next to you two seems way more dangerous in all kinds of ways.

Chapter 77: I’ll Be Sure to Remember Those Words
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After confirming the number of people, the bus departed. The next destination was Kiyomizu-dera. I had never been there before, but I knew the name from history classes and such.
“How long do you think it’ll take to get there? What are you planning to do until then?”
“When it comes to school trips, it’s gotta be love talk. I want to chat with you about all kinds of stuff, Ryouya.”
“Come on. We already went over all that during the sleepover before summer break.”
“Ehh? Did we really?”
“It’s still burned into my memory.”
There was no way I could forget that day, when they discovered my stash of erotic manga and other things I’d hidden, barged into the bath, and made me talk about love afterward.
“Then let’s pick up where we left off that time.”
“See? You do remember.”
“Alright, let’s continue with what kind of girls Ryouya-kun likes. I’ll ask questions in a two-choice format like last time.”
Even after talking for two hours back then, they still weren’t satisfied? Well, I didn’t get to answer much that time because every time I said something, Reona and Riona would grill me for details.
“So, Ryouya. Do you prefer taller girls or shorter girls?”
“Ah, so we’re really doing this again.”
“Of course. I’m sure you understand, but I won’t tolerate any half-hearted answer.”
“Hmm… I guess I prefer shorter girls.”
I gave that answer after thinking for a while. I wasn’t really sure what counted as “tall” or “short,” but since I was only 167 centimeters—below average height—it made sense that a shorter girl would be a better match for me. That was the reasoning behind my answer, but when I saw the happy expressions vanishing from both of their faces, I realized I’d probably picked the wrong option. I felt like the temperature in the bus dropped, and I could sense my life was in danger.
“Hmph. So Ryouya-kun prefers short girls, huh.”
“I’d like you to explain that reasoning in detail to me and Onee-chan.”
During the last love talk too, whenever I gave the wrong answer, Reona and Riona would thoroughly interrogate me. No, to be honest, it felt more like brainwashing than interrogation. I didn’t know why, but as they kept questioning me, I started to feel like the option I didn’t choose was actually my real preference.
They twisted my thinking so much that calling it brainwashing wasn’t an exaggeration. Their pressure to “hurry up and answer” was overwhelming, so I decided to just respond with whatever thought I had in mind for now.
“Well, I mean, as you can see, I’m not even average height, right? So I figured a shorter girl would be more of a match for me.”
“But wouldn’t it actually be better to be with a tall girl if your heights are close? It’d make hugging easier, and you could share clothes.”
“Tall girls tend to look more stylish too.”
“Maybe so, but don’t taller girls usually go out with tall guys anyway?”
Sure, there were couples with similar or reversed height differences, but those were the exceptions. For someone like me who was below average, the chances of dating a tall girl had to be extremely low.
Well, in my case as a Background Character B, there’s a very high chance I’ll die without ever having had a girlfriend or losing my virginity.
“I don’t think that’s necessarily true. Even if someone was around the same height as me, if I liked them, it wouldn’t matter.”
“Yeah, neither Onee-chan nor I choose people based on height alone.”
“If everyone thought like you two, that’d be nice.”
“By the way, if a girl about the same height as you confessed her feelings, would you be able to go out with her?”
“That’d be totally fine. Honestly, I’d want to go out with her.”
No way I’d turn down a benevolent goddess who would be willing to date someone like me. As long as she didn’t hate the idea, it wouldn’t matter if she was taller than me.
“Hmm, is that so?”
“I’ll be sure to remember those words.”
I wasn’t sure why, but apparently that answer passed their test, because the ominous mood around them lifted. At least for now, I was safe.
“Alright, let’s keep this pace going. Next question!”
“Wait, we’re still doing this?”
“Of course. We’re keeping it up until we reach Kiyomizu-dera.”
You’ve gotta be kidding me. The road’s pretty jammed too, so we won’t be there for a while…
