Afterward, we completed the open campus program we had planned to attend without any particular incident and began our train ride from Okayama Station toward Kurashiki City.
Our next destination was the Bikan Historical Quarter, an area that preserved the townscape from the Edo to Meiji periods. It was undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist spots within Okayama Prefecture.
After getting off the train at Kurashiki Station, we headed on foot toward the Bikan District. About fifteen minutes of walking brought us to a retro-modern view of white-walled storehouses and namako-kabe walls lining the streets.
“So this is the Bikan District, huh?”
“It’s like we’ve time-traveled to the distant past.”
Both of them looked around curiously, snapping pictures with their phones. Since it was summer break, there were quite a few tourists like us who had likely come from outside the prefecture.
“There are a lot of people wearing kimonos.”
“Wearing one in a townscape like this would look amazing on camera.”
“I think there’s a rental shop nearby. Want to try it?”
“Of course we’re going to wear them!”
“I want to wear one too.”
When I made the suggestion, both of them instantly responded with sparkling eyes. So we headed straight for a nearby rental shop. There, we received an explanation about the rental process from a staff member and started choosing what to wear. In the end, Reona chose a red kimono, and Riona picked a blue one. For the record, I went with a navy kimono.
I hadn’t originally planned on wearing one, but they both pleaded with me, and I couldn’t say no to them. Thankfully, there were professional staff who helped with the dressing, so there was no problem that occurred while we were getting dressed.
“You really do look amazing in a kimono.”
“Thanks. You look good too, Ryouya-kun.”
“Ryouya looks so refreshing to look at when he’s donned in a kimono.”
I felt uncomfortable in the kimono since I wasn’t used to wearing it, but if they said that, then I guess it was worth the trouble.
“Alright. Let’s start exploring.”
“Yeah, let’s go!”
“Onee-chan, you’re being too loud.”
“Oops, sorry, sorry.”
With that kind of conversation, we began strolling through the Bikan District. We took commemorative photos here and there and bought snacks from shops as we slowly walked along the Kurashiki River.
“…Ryouya-kun, can you really eat this?”
“It’s so blue it doesn’t look tasty at all…”
“Yeah, I get why you’d say that at first glance, but it actually tastes good.”
When I handed the two of them a “Denim-man,” a blue pork bun, they looked doubtful at first. But once they tried it, they seemed to enjoy it just fine.
There were also denim burgers and denim soft serve being sold, all of which were the same shade of blue as the Denim-man. By the way, the reason they pushed the denim theme so hard here was because Kurashiki City was the birthplace of domestically produced jeans.
After that, we visited an art museum with many world-famous paintings, spent some time at a Shiba Inu café, and then took a break at the rest area on the second floor of the tourist information center.
“It’s my first time here, but there’s so much to see. It’s fun.”
“I can see why it’s such a popular tourist destination.”
“Told you. I’ve been here many times since I was a kid, and I never get tired of it.”
“I get how you feel, Ryouya-kun.”
“Yeah, I’d love to come again.”
Both Reona and Riona had such satisfied expressions that I could confidently say bringing them here was absolutely the right call. I also had a blast, especially since it had been a while since I’d last visited.
“By the way, isn’t there a place around here where you can have a wedding? I want to check it out.”
“Okay, let’s head there next.”
Reona was probably talking about the complex tourist facility centered around a red-brick hotel covered in ivy. That was also one of the popular spots in the Bikan District.
“Thanks, Ryouya-kun.”
“I’m excited to see what it’s like.”
After finishing our break, we set off toward our next destination. Since it was less than a ten-minute walk from the tourist center, it didn’t take us long to arrive.
“This facility used to be a factory during the Meiji era.”
“Now that you mention it, I can kind of see the remnants of a factory.”
“The contrast between the red and green is so pretty.”
“Yeah. That’s why this place is a must-see when you come to the Bikan District.”
We passed under the red-brick archway at the front entrance, walked through a spacious corridor, and stepped into the courtyard.
“The wedding venue Reona mentioned earlier is either this courtyard square or the ceremony space over there, if I remember right.”
“Holding a wedding in this courtyard will definitely make it an open space wedding surrounded by nature.”
“I’m curious about the ceremony space too.”
“Well, we’re already here, so let’s go check it out. If there’s no wedding happening today, the area should be open to the public.”
We quickly made our way to the ceremony space, and upon entering and looking around, Riona spoke up.
“It has a calm atmosphere. I can imagine a red carpet and white wedding dress looking beautiful here.”
“The other spot was nice too, but this one’s really great as well.”
Reona and Riona were happily imagining a wedding and getting excited about it. I was influenced by their mood and tried to picture my own wedding… but nothing came to mind.
Instead, for some reason, I pictured a future where I was tied to a chair and being forced by Reona and Riona to sign and seal a marriage certificate against my will. Something like that would never happen, of course, so I figured I must’ve just been tired from the fun and resulted in my imagination running wild.
